5/15/21 This was my third tour of the Asa Packer mansion. Our knowledgeable guide Elizabeth was enthusiastic and very detailed in our tour. It was nice to finally see this beautiful mansion open again fir tours. Regardless of the ever flip flopping declarations of the "CDC" as of yesterday masking is required on the tour. I learned so much about the Packer family, and about the times and their children. Asa Packer was the founder of Lehigh University. I loved touring this mansion and seeing the authentic stained glass, decor, furniture from Philadelphia and the paintings in the home. This tour really gives you a flavor of what life was like back then. It's most certainly worth the 6$ but be prepared! Cash only. No photos are allowed inside.

Such a unique place! It offers a lot of history to the town and the tour was good. It's amazing how the majority of the original pieces are in such good condition. No wonder they do not allow pictures! Definitely worth a visit. At the time I went, tickets were cash only- Not sure if it's normally like that

Last week while visiting Jim Thorpe I had the pleasure of touring this lovely mansion. I love the history and architecture of old homes and this one didn't disappoint. It's mostly original and all the belongings and furnishings are intact from the last occupant, Sara Packer Cummings since her death in 1912. It's like stepping back in time. Going in I knew nothing about Asa Packer and why this family was so important to community. Walking out I had the knowledge of his humble beginnings and his legacy and how his presence changed transportation for this area. The $10 fee was a small fee to pay for the knowledge I obtained. The tour is an hour long and not only provides insight on how they lived back then, but also about the family, history, and tidbits of information about certain furniture pieces and the stories behind them. I especially liked the personal stories. It made the characters come to life. The house itself has beautiful bones, artfully hand carved wood details and an abundance of gaudy wallpaper and furnishings but still I love that stuff. Be sure not to miss the wallpaper in the front entry - the design is made of painted gravel and has withstood the test of time. In fact, aside from a few carpet pieces the house is as it was in 1912. Frozen in time. At the time of my tour it was the anniversary of Mrs Packers death and staying true to Victorian tradition her pictures and bed was draped in black. It's obvious that the caretakers of this home are very proud of it and go to great lengths to keep it preserved and the family's memory alive. Some things to know: accessing the house requires walking up a steep hill and many steps. It's not stroller or handicap friendly. Inside, strollers are forbidden and young children are discouraged from taking the tour but not turned away. I paid $3 for my 4 year old granddaughter who had model behavior throughout the tour despite being bored to death. There isn't a public restroom anywhere on the property - you'll have to go down the hill to the information center/train station. For obviously reasons no food, drink, touching of items, or walking away from the tour is allowed. If you must leave the tour needs to be interrupted so a guide can personally escort you out. With that said they encourage you not to take the tour if you can't stand or have any other issue preventing you from being able to withstand it in it's entirety. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly - tips are encouraged. No pictures, video, etc is allowed. However you can take pictures outside. The larger the tour the less you'll get out of it as there's only so much room to stand that's not roped off where the guide speaks. SIDENOTE: I had no T-Mobile service while on the hill, thus wasn't able to check in. However I did have decent service in the town of Jim Thorpe itself.

The Asa Packer Mansion was much more extensive and beautiful than I was expecting. I have visited a lot of old houses, castles, and mansions. This one stood up to all of them. I wasn't expecting that Jim Thorpe, PA, which is relatively nearby would have such a nice Victorian mansion. First of all, everything is intact. They still have all the furnishings exactly how it was 150 years ago. The tour is in depth, too. The tour guides have all worked there for years, and they really know their stuff. On the tour he even played their nickelodeon for us. Had I known how historic this mansion was going to be, I would have visited it years ago already.

The sons house next door, now a b&b.

Well worth $10. Super informative tour lasts about 1 hour and covers the history of the titular owner plus backstory on the furniture, antiques and other family history. Gorgeous house!! Really cool furnishings that are ALL original. This is their house how it was. I put seeing this ahead of the train, jail or Mauchunk museum. There's not a ton to do in JT, but this should be first. No photos allowed, but Theres a ton online, or a set of postcards for $1.

It is an amazing place to visit. I did the tour on Nov. 21, 2021. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the family and the mansion. The tour took maybe 45 minutes and was very interesting and informative. It contains some absolutely stunning woodwork and furniture. I would highly recommend a tour of this historic mansion.

Great Home wonderfully preserved. Learned a lot about the Packers and their influence on the town. Highly recommend a visit!

I had the chance to visit here a couple of times when I was young, back in 1995/1996. It felt magical to go through such a cool mansion!

Ask the Community - Asa Packer Mansion

Is there parking closer to the mansion for individuals that are unable to walk up the hill? Thanks for responding to my question but that doesn't help with people with mobility issues. So that wasn't helpful?

His remains, and a giant memorial stone, sit in the center, and are surrounded by statues of him as a football player and a triathlete. The statue of him playing baseball is still under construction, still under construction but if it's as nice as the other two, it will be a great addition. We spent at least 30 minutes here and I learned a lot about Jim Thorpe. I especially liked the section that discussed his twin brother and the thunder and lightning sculpture. I came away from this memorial with great respect for Jim Thorpe and utter disgust for his third wife who would sell his remains to this town to make a quick buck against his family's wishes. I'm also pretty disgusted with a town and it's people who would pull a stunt like this just to get a little extra tourism. Jim Thorpe seems to have been a philanthropic and kind person who worked hard and genuinely cared about other people. It's sad to think that he will spend eternity in a strange place so a few people could make some quick cash off of all he achieved.

The memorial includes larger-than-life bronze statues, notably a 2007 statue of Thorpe as a football player and a 2011 statue depicting him with a discus. In honor of his legacy, the town was renamed Jim Thorpe, where my partner, his aunt and I came for a day trip last Saturday. Located in the picturesque southern edge of the Pocono Mountains, just a two-hour drive from New York City, this place appeared as though it's sprung from the pages of a fictional fairytale. We arrived around noontime via a shuttle bus from Mauch Chunk Lake Park when their Fall Foliage Festival, held every weekend in October, was in full swing. It was alive with the people enjoying live music, charming local shops and boutiques showcasing the work of talented artisans, and a delectable array of food options. We meandered through a busy Broadway and Race Street in the "historic district" as it has maintained its old-timey, somewhat Victorian charm of years past. We enjoyed the tour inside the Asa Packer Mansion. Purchasing a ticket for the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway on the spot would have been impossible given the crowd size. It's a place that instantly feels like home, yet transports one back in time to an era of simplicity and serenity. It was a fairytale escape in the Pocono Mountains, which we can recommend.
