During a girls ' lunch in Wayne, I recently stumbled upon Neighborhood League Shops and discovered…read morethe treasures they sell and the opportunity to consign items you would like to sell. You've heard the saying, "One person's trash is another person's treasure." After refreshing and restyling my living and dining rooms, I found some less-loved items that someone else might enjoy. Knowing I planned another visit to the King of Prussia area, I brought my no longer loved items to the Neighborhood League Shops, a nonprofit in Wayne since 1912. This is my first time consigning. I learned that each drop-off is limited to 15 items, and no books are accepted. The ladies in the shop were very friendly. They explained the consignment process and accepted my two boxes containing less than 15 items. When shopping for preloved items, the quality and value of these older, well-made products are second to none. The Neighborhood League Shops offers an excellent selection of reasonably priced cut glass, crystal, sterling silver, etc.

She especially wanted to check out the Alley Door, which she described as more "eclectic " than the furniture and clothing stores. We first went into the housewares and furniture store. The main floor has lots of cut glass and fine china pieces, jewelry and some art. A few lamps. Not a large space. Laid out well and clean. I headed to their basement, which had more everyday "home decor" items, some linens, small electrics, etc. I saw many lovely things, though nothing interesting enough to purchase. We then headed over to the Alley Door, which is around the corner. Despite it being almost noon in weekday, and a sign stating they open at 10, the store was dark and locked. Huh? We walk back to where we were and ask about this. They know nothing, they said, just that the cash box had not been collected. That's it. I imagine these stores are run by volunteers, and it's a good cause. I'm not sure I would make a special trip to shop there. When I'm in the area, I'd go again.

The Velvet Shoestring accepts consignments on high quality pre-owned modern, vintage and antique items - think Waterford, Herend, Herman Miller. Pricing changes based on the time an item is available, dropping every 30 days. This is noted on the tag so if, say, you want something but don't want to pay the current price you can take your chances that it won't sell by the time the price drops. When I say something is a relative bargain, I mean they Eden at the most reduced price you will not find a Tiffany lamp for $5. Consider that the lamp was, let's say, $900 new, they might price it at $400 to start and it's still a good price for what it is. They don't negotiate beyond the tag. Staff are minimal and unobtrusive. You're generally left to wander the two floors (main floor, lower floor) to your hearts content. It's a lovely store that I enjoy visiting every few weeks to see what's new and what I might want - the other day I bought the stained glass lamp in one of the photos. I love it.

I stopped by a few days ago to check out their new store. It's significantly bigger than Nana's Attic, which means it feels far less cramped. Yay! Still very good prices, the "yellow tag" items are consignment and generally higher priced than the store's donated stock. It about killed my soul to see an awesome vintage salt & pepper mixed in with newer dishes in a consignment lot. Aaah! Staff are great, the store is clean and bright. I'll definitely be back. Note: angled parking in front of the building is NOT free, Pontiac is a public street, and those are pay at kiosk metered spots.

I have been a customer at this store since it was called Nana's Attic. Today I was there, looking for furniture. The selection was a bit overpriced for the quality. Suddenly, I needed to use the restroom. The woman working informed me that they did not have a public restroom and that I could go to the Dollar Tree next door. The Dollar Tree did not have a usable restroom. I returned to thrift and thrive because, quite frankly, I was literally about to pee myself. I begged to use the employee bathroom. The employees lied to my face and said that there was no bathroom in the entire store. Yeah right, if that's true, then that's a worker's rights violation, and they would not be in business. I explained that I was having an emergency and they did not care. It really stinks to be a loyal patron of a store, then to be treated so poorly in return. Particularly during a vulnerable moment. There are plenty of better thrift stores in the area with better prices AND customer bathrooms. It's a shame that a store that has such a great mission doesn't provide a great shopping experience.
