As a professional landscape company that supported Art's for 35 years, we unfortunately have to warn others about the changes under the new ownership (post-2023/2025). Recent experiences have consistently involved poor customer service, billing errors, and significant delays in service. The main concern we wish to highlight is pricing transparency and fairness. We were quoted over $700 each to repair the mowers; upon taking them elsewhere, the total cost for the same repairs was a mere $125.00 for 1 mower and $225.00 for the other. (We did not tell the new shop we had taken them elsewhere first.) While we hope this was a simple miscalculation, the significant price discrepancy suggests a potential issue with their current estimation process or pricing fairness. The problem is not with the mechanics who are the best. Prospective customers should be cautious and perhaps seek multiple quotes before committing to repairs here, as current pricing seems questionable compared to industry standards. read more

The lady that is now in charge has terrible customer service skills. If you're not knowledgeable about what you're buying, she will sell you the wrong items to make a sale. I came in to purchase a Stihl FS-Km Line Attachment and it was recommended to replace the drive shaft to my Stihl KombiMotor. She spent some time looking for the attachment and was getting flustered. She found it, brought it out and tried to sell me the line attachment still packaged and unassembled. I asked if i could have it assembled, so that I could test it out and make sure it works. She didn't say anything, grabbed the package and went to the back. When she returned she said the mechanic would bring it out in 10 minutes. Attachment came out and it worked properly. Paid, but no receipt was given. While I was there, it was recommended that I replace my drive shaft to the Stihl KombiMotor. She looked up the part, brought a drive shaft out and charged me $40 for it; I paid and no receipt given. The package the drive shaft came in was open. I asked if I could make sure it fits. She said do whatever you want. I instantly noticed that it was curved, I mentioned that to her and she explained that is how it came as I could see it was still packaged. The mechanic came out to the lobby at that time and offered to help. He then mentioned that the drive shaft was too long and that there was no way it would work because it was curved. The mechanic tried to help out and looked up the part number and noticed it was the wrong drive shaft. He explained it would have to be ordered. I asked if I could be refunded for the drive shaft I had already paid for and she tried to say that I hadn't paid yet. I told her I had already given her $40 for the drive shaft and she gave me the wrong part. She refused to give me my money back until her assistant reminded her that I had paid. I asked if I could get a receipt for the line attachment and she asked the assistant to write it out for me. I had paid $150 for it, the receipt total amounted to $143.57. I asked if I could get my change since i had paid $150. I was give an attitude. Unfortunately, this is my local lawn mower shop, but will try to avoid this location as much as I can. read more

Took a chance on a place with crap reviews and I paid the price. After getting attitude and a week wait I got my lawn mower back for the price it would have been to buy a new one. Lesson learned. read more

BEWARE: New Ownership Has Ruined This Place Sometimes new ownership can be a good thing--bringing fresh ideas and better customer service. Unfortunately, that's not the case with Art's. I've lived in East County for over 10 years, and I've always made an effort to support locally owned businesses over big box stores, especially when they offer great service. Art's used to be one of those places: prices were a bit higher, but the customer service made it worth it. That's no longer true. I recently went in on a Tuesday to get a replacement tire for my lawnmower. They had the tire in stock and offered to mount it on the rim. I was told I'd need to leave a $35 deposit, so I asked what the total cost would be. The young woman at the counter checked with the back and told me they didn't know how long it would take and would let me know when it was done. That was odd--it's a tire swap, usually a 15-minute job. I didn't hear back the next day, so I called to follow up. The older woman at the counter said it wasn't done yet but promised to call me when it was ready. No call Wednesday. No call Thursday. I finally went in on Friday, and it still wasn't done. The same woman told me, "We just got it in." I asked, "What did you just get in? I dropped it off days ago, and you had the tire in stock." She said nothing and went to the back. I told her to forget it--I'd just buy the tire and handle it myself. At the counter, she brought out the new and old tire and told me it would be $90. I said that seemed way too high. She insisted, "It's a heavy-duty tire." I looked up the price online--same tire, much cheaper. A man came to the counter, they exchanged a few words, and she then said it was actually $65, not $90. I told her it felt like they were trying to rip me off. She asked, "Sir, why would we have to do that?" Honestly, I don't know if it was an honest mistake or an attempt to overcharge someone not paying attention. After leaving, I checked around--other shops and online retailers had the same tire for about $33. I don't mind paying a little more to support a local business, but double the price and worse service? No thanks. To top it off, I asked why it had taken so long. She said work is done in order of ticket number. So instead of knocking out a 15-minute tire job, they let it sit behind larger projects for days? That's just poor judgment. I work in a customer service-driven industry too, and sometimes you have to knock out the quick jobs to keep customers happy. It's called time management. Sadly, Art's is no longer a place I can recommend. A local business only works when it values its customers, and that clearly isn't the case here anymore. read more

I would highly recommend never utilizing this shop. My son took our mower in to get a new gas bulb (the rubber button to pump in the gas) installed and requested an oil change. He was told the labor could be up to $65.00 and he had to leave a $35 deposit. About 4 days later we had heard nothing and called them. They said it was ready and we could come get it. I asked what they had done. They said the replaced the button. No oil change. Apparently the female at the front failed to write it down. So I asked could you please do the oil change as requested? Sure, agreed. Several days later we went in to pick it up, knowing an oil change is quick. We were told that the bulb they had installed was incorrect and they didn't realize it until they had some problem when changing the oil. The woman up front said she had ordered it and it should be any day. 15 days from when we originally dropped it off, we had not heard from them so called. It's done they said. So we went to get it. When we got there, they had done a lot of work we had not requested. Changed spark plug, tune up, new air filter, sharpened blade and cleaned mowe. When she showed me what they had written "Service" was a lie. Servicing it was never mentioned. I specifically requested the oil change that was requested up front. I told her she added that when I spoke to her and requested only that they do the oil change originally requested. It raised my parts cost substantially and my labor. I don't have that kind of income to be blindsided by an unknown and unexpected expense. When I asked why they had not called me to ask if I wanted all of that done, the woman cut me off, wouldn't listen, yanked my invoice away from me and said she would take out the spark plug and we could pay the high bill and leave. Labor was to be $65.00, it was $145.00. She then threatened to not let us have the mower. Like she was going to hold our mower hostage! I laughed. I suggested that a good customer service practice would be to call a customer if you find additional work to be done to see if they agree. But she talked over me and didn't listen to a word I said. I reached over and took back my invoice and said I just want to settle up and take my mower home. She argued about that too, like she wasn't going to allow me to pay and have my mower. I actually had my son make sure it started before we left as they showed us nothing, not even the supposedly sharpened blade. That was a new blade from a year ago. It didn't need sharpening. She was so rude, their customer contact and service sucks, and this woman is unbelievably rude. They did not make one call to us in 15 days! For a service that shouldn't have been more than 3 or 4 days, considering other previous service submittals. They are cons and practice unethical business practices. And the woman does not listen to the customer and talks over them the entire time. My son even stopped her and asked her to stop talking over me and listen. Nope, she talked over him too so never even considered shutting up. I will be filing a BBB complaint online as that is the only way beside mail. We were there in 2024 and had great service with an entirely different crew. I have never been so disgusted with a person in my life. Do not take your business to them. They have changed. They are not to be trusted. What a shame. I'd picket them if I could stand for long enough. Oh, and the pull cord for the choke handle was messed up when we got it home and looked at it. It had wires pulled out at the base where it enters for the choke. It's still functioning, but it was not in that condition when we took it in, and who knows how long it will last in that condition. My son knows that mower like the back of his hand. He pays attention to details. But I wasn't about to go back and call them out on their damage because it would have been futile. And just FYI: I have only posted one negative review in my entire life. This is my second. That is how disgusted I am with them/her. This review is mainly for all you Karen's out there that gave Art's Lawnmower shop a one-star Yelp review. Just wanted to let you know that I have been going to Art's for at least 3 decades. Since the first time I went in there, I could see that customer interaction was not the number one asset for the staff. Are the guys behind the counter rude? Yah, if you try to tell them that you know what is wrong with your equipment, and you really have no idea what is wrong with your machine. That is why you are there, YOU DON'T KNOW, or you would have fixed it yourself!! I do not go to places like this have a chit-chat, I go to get my stuff fixed. I have bought an Echo chainsaw and a Stihl trimmer from Arts. Both are over 20 years old now. One time I had an issue starting my chainsaw. I went back to Art's and the guy with the pony tail (as you Karen's like to call him), examined it for about 10 minutes then got it started. No charge! About a few years later I had more starting issues with it (but got it started myself), and decide it was time for a tune up for the saw, as it had never had one before. Art's tune it up, for a reasonable price and it has not had a problem since. That was over ten years ago. The Stihl trimmer I got from Art's still starts right up and it is decades old. So, the moral here is: if you want a competent shop where the staff actually knows what they are doing, and they sell good products at competitive prices, then Art's is your shop. If you want the counter guy to kiss your ass, then go to the Ferrari store in La Jolla. They'll suck up to you until they find out you don't have any money! read more

Had my chainsaw there for cleanup and tune up. They ordered a carb, I asked to keep the old one so I can rebuild and keep as spare. They threw it away and told me the trash already came that day. It cost me the price of another carburetor, I need a spare as this chainsaw lives in the Angeles crest mountains in the family property for cleanups. I've never had any issues with Art's lawnmower shop, until now. I'm assuming it's a one-off. Still a great place to sharpen blades, and buy equipment as well as mix oil and trimmer line. read more

Went to Art's to help me with what I thought was a warranty issue with a blower I bought at HD. Can't remember the c guys name at the counter (no pony tail) but he was super helpful. He asked me for the blower, looked at the filter and spark plug, replaced them and its back to full power again. Read some reviews and most were one star, ouch. Listen. I don't YELP very often but after dealing with the crew at Art's Lawnmower and Trailer Parts, I felt compelled to do just that. I recently contacted the shop regarding replenishment of some 2018 supplies to replace the old 2017 stuff, and was put in touch with Lance, the Parts Manager. Lance guided me through the process to get the 2018 supplies ASAP and we agreed that I would send someone to pick them up at our earliest convenience. However..... Lance went the EXTRA MILE and sent those supplies directly to our shop!! Along with the supplies, Lance included a handwritten note that expressed his willingness to "spread the joy", which was much appreciated by all of us here at the shop. Thanks Lance. Called to see if they have a fs131 string trimmer in stock. The guy answering the phone seems real frustrated that he had to speak to customers. He told me he had a couple of those models that I asked were in stock. I planned and was ready to purchase this $460 trimmer. When I arrived, driving down from poway. The same guy met me in the showroom floor. And kept reminding me how busy they were after greeting him good afternoon. Turns out he lied to me and just got me to waste my time and gas to come down there. They seem very rude to thier customers. I mean just look at the reviews they dont trybvery hard at all. Bought a very expensive DR Walk-behind brush mower there a few years back and was told at the time that even though it wasn't their regular practice, they would do their best to provide at-home service on an as-available basis. Subsequent attempts to get assistance over the intervening years were always brushed off with the excuse that they were too busy, even in January (the busiest time in the annual mowing season, right?), and they adamantly insisted that they didn't know any independent mechanics who might be willing to help me out. I managed to get the mower taken in a few times by a friend with a trailer and received adequate if pricey service, but later found a terrific mechanic who gladly helped out with annual servicing and occasional minor problems. Just recently, however, the blade pull-to-operate switch went bad. I called Art's to see if they had a replacement part. The man who took my call said his computer was down and he had to wait for the boss to come in and bring it up, but that he would get back to me just as soon as the system was restored and he could positively identify the item and check availability. Three hours later I called back and inquired if he had had any success. He positively lit into me, telling me that he had said he would call me back and he would but there were 'about a million customers' ahead of me and I would just have to cool it until he got around to me. I called back to get someone else - 2nd employee told me the 'guy' who could answer my pricing question, "ran across the street to get a taco". I asked is he the only person that can answer my question and the reply was yes. Art's has been vital to my business success. Kenny, the owner helped me get my business going twenty years ago and when thousands of dollars worth of equipment was stolen he got me back on my feet. Steve and Alan are great but Lance is an acquired taste that comes off as rude and unconcerned about the subtleties of being the face of the company. Took my walk behind line trimmer to get repaired, took them almost 3 months. I had to keep calling them,one guy said,so and so didn't order the parts blaming someone else,bad service,they fixed it for 300 dollars, the mechanic was a nice guy though he had nothing to do with ordering (that I know of)It wasn't even about the three hundred just that I had to keep calling them.very unhappy never go back again and that wasn't the first time I had been there. I now go to a place that I found on market street in San Diego. I won't say the name but their service charge is a lot lower & quick turnaround . I live in jamul I would rather drive 15 more miles for better service and lower service charge than to take somewhere which is more convenient (closer to me) read more

I have just bought a new riding mower hybrid and used it for one time at my property in Julian. The unit worked well, however has a dual electric motor mowing deck and towards the end of the day I must have hit a rock on the property and one of the blades came off and broke the bolt attaching it to the mowing deck. I was upset I had did this and took the deck to Art's since it is near my home and dropped it off to be serviced. The guys there were helpful and the service technician, Paul, said he would try and extract the bolt. He called me the next day and said he couldn't get it out because the shaft was also bent. When I went to pick it up he said there would be no charge and he further explained he used to work on wind turbine engines and explained how the motor on my unit was the same type of system that charged a generator on my riding mower. Why I am so happy is he was very positive and was able to tell me a lot about my unit although he had never worked on one before. He said he couldn't charge me in good conscience because he couldn't fix it. Although it was unfix-able, it made my day that he was so helpful and in the end the company I bought it from is able to warranty out the part so I will eventually be back on the unit once the part comes and I have learned a lot and will definitely go back to Art's for anymore of my mowing needs. read more

I walked in looking for a yellow package chain. I was laughed at and told the low kick back is the only chain sold. Even if I was wrong I was laughed at and treated rudely. I over heard their mechanic in the parking lot saying he was ready to just close the f***ing gate. It was like 930 am. I'll shop at the stihl dealer in El Cajon. BTW I'm holding the yellow package chain(not low kickback) I got from their store about 1 1/2 years ago. read more
