The coffee here is okay, not great, not bad. It has a nice eclectic atmosphere, in a very open room, with lots of light and windows. And the background music is subdued (not loud) creating a nice peaceful atmosphere.
But:
I came in on a slow afternoon, when the place was almost empty. There are thirteen tables inside, plus the exterior patio with several more tables. Only two tables were occupied. I sat down at a table by the window, with my coffee, surrounded by other empty tables, and got out my laptop. I had already asked the barista for the wifi code.
Then the barista immediately came up to me and told me that if I wanted to use my laptop I had to sit in the back of the cafe. I looked back to see two junky tables, with crappy uncomfortable chairs (compared to the retro modern and Eames chairs in the front of the cafe), truly out of the main area of the cafe, in a sort of work area. Again, the cafe was almost empty. I was surrounded where I first sat by empty tables.
Why do they have free wifi, if they don't want people to use laptops? Why is it okay for one of the other two patrons at the time to be sitting clearly for hours, reading the newspaper, but not okay if I want to read the news on my laptop? Another person sits and is reading and texting on her phone, but the laptop is not okay?
I understand that many cafes don't want to fill up with people working on their laptops, but in a just about empty cafe I really did not see how I was creating a problem. It just felt more like I was violating some sort of artsy pseudo-cool aesthetic the cafe wanted to embody, that was rather its own form of disciplinarity and rigidness.
In any case, being told to move made me feel very unwelcome. This is the second weird unwelcoming experience I've had in Freiburg in two days. I came to this cafe, spoke in German, tipped the barista generously, but in return am told to move to the back, out of sight, as if there is a problem when just about all the tables are empty. Maybe they simply don't like foreigners here? I don't get it.
I have traveled a lot in Germany in recent years. I have been in many different types of cafes. This is the only time I was ever told to move, because of my laptop (or for any other reason). I regret not having resisted: "Really? Are you serious?" Instead I was polite about it; I moved; but then felt uncomfortable and left. The uptight attitude really undermines whatever laid back artistic attitude the cafe is trying to have. read more
