Sadly, the quality of the 'dark brew' ain't what it could be (read: extremely bitter espresso drinks) and that's a shame given how centrally located and charmingly laid out this place is. I'm a sucker for coffee sack-lined walls, funky old light fixtures and solid wood 'steh cafe' tables. To complete a place, however, one needs great product. That's where, at least java-wise, this place falls short of the mark. Props to the young gal who served us. She was so very nice. I'd like to pay for her to go to barista training school. Having said that, it could be a case of not having the best machines to work with, or, at the very least, not having them in the best working order.

Standing in the doorway looking around I let the atmosphere and style of this place settle with me. I liked it. Art supplies on the walls, paintings on easels, reused seating furniture in various styles arranged into little islands with modern lighting thruout created an eclectic, creative and inviting feeling. When I left I said "bye" (just out of a friendly habit not expecting a reaction from anybody) and then literally the entire cafe said "bye" to me (the "regulars"). That put a smile on my face.

I don't know if it was because of the aesthetically pleasing minimalistic interior, the artsy vibes or the amazing coffee cakes they would always have, but it was such a neat place. Wish they had something like in near me in the states! Things to note: if you're going to sit on your laptop and be doing work, you have to sit at the tables towards the back of the cafe in the studio area. You'll be asked to move back there if you don't. It's definitely meant to be more of a "come and talk with your friends/read the paper" kind of place and they don't necessarily encourage you being on your computer, but they'll happily give you the wifi password and leave you be (as long as you're buying more than one milchkaffee if you're there for a few hours)! I think most of the baristas knew English, but obviously they appreciate if you try your best to speak with them in German -- which is what I recommend you try to do. Regardless, they were all really cool, friendly, and welcoming.

What I really dug were the complimentary magazines and newspapers for those wanting to read-n-sip. The espresso drinks were just a tad bitter, but still drinkable. I would def visit here often were I to live in town. As has been mentioned in a few of the German reviews, my partner, too, felt that one doesn't necessarily seem to feel too terribly welcomed as a non-regular. I, on the other hand, felt blissfully unaware.

Whenever I find a shop in Germany I make sure to stock up (tea always make great souvenirs!). In hindsight I wish i had bought more teas when I stopped by here in October, turned out the suitcase had room for it, but I settled for some iceteas, two really flavoursome Christmas fruit teas, my old favourite green rooibos peach and rooibos with pannacotta-rhubarb-cream. The shop also has a nice stock of lovely tea accessories, mugs, strainers, kettles etc. Great gifts with some lovely teas. Unfortunately I found the staff to be rather grumpy, at least when you don't speak (fluent) German... Also nb they only take card payments if you shop for at least 10 euros.
