Reviewing it as a venue for a large party - haven't taken any community classes there. The frustrating: ~SC isn't really owned by anybody - it has a board of directors. The guy who's supposed to respond to all the inquiries about reservations was not the most responsive by email, but was pretty responsive by phone. He's a stilt walker in a grateful dead coverband who manages a community art space in JP - he's a very salt-of-the-earth kind of guy, which worked for us, but you just need to know that that's what you're signing on for - someone who isn't going to get back to your emails right away, who you may have to track down a bit, but who is super nice and very laid back in approach. I am not laid back, but I came prepared with the questions I wanted answered and got all the answers I needed in writing on our contract. ~You never quiiiite know what you're walking into when you walk into the space. They host a ton of different kinds of community events, so how it's decorated when you see it one time might not necessarily be the way you see it when you visit it next. People are supposed to clean up after themselves, but there are varying extents of that. You never even really know which light switch is going to turn the lights on. The fantastic: ~Those frustrating points above are SO minor compared to the fact that for just a few hundred bucks you can have a wedding venue space (everywhere else I called was in the multiple-thousand dollar range and had a ton of restrictions on what you could bring in/restricted to their own catering/facilities/booze etc). It is a gorgeous space that kind of feels like a big summer camp recreation hall, with 2 floors, indoor balconies, a stage and a bar. It felt like a true barn-raising - we had a dozen of our friends show up early and help with setup, hanging lights from the ceiling, bringing my husband's dj equipment and speakers, a friend home-brewed 5 kegs of beer and brought another several cases of booze from the company he works for, and we fed our friends with beer, a big-batch order of pizzas from JP House of Pizza, and 150 Union Square Donuts. It was a 90s throwback dance party with a lot of games and a lot of love - low key and marvelous. I cannot have imagined a more ideal space than Spontaneous Celebrations, and to do it so affordably makes me want to scream to the world how worthwhile this place is. RECOMMEND! HIGHLY!

It's still small enough to be intimate and has a bar, but is open and feels more like a theatre. Because of the sheer openness and shape of the space are acoustics are solid. The pulpit was converted into a sizeable stage with a broad audience area where the pews once were. There's also excellent views from the expansive two tiered balcony. When I first visited for Soul Revival in 2001 (a now defunct deep house party) the ceiling was painted midnight blue with stars, and people came together once a month to relive the reverence of its foundation through movement and sound. It was consistently one of the most beautiful experiences of my lifetime. Keepin' Jeebus proud, folks. I only wish they kept the organ.

The rooms were very comfortable, and we were lucky enough to get one with a great view out over the river. And while all hotels in Boston are going to be a little pricey, I think you get a very good deal for the price, especially with the location. It's the location that really sells this spot. If you're here as a tourist, as we were, then it is best to not rent a car in this city. There are convenient metro stations very closeby, the neighborhoods around here are very walkable with waterfront promenades, and there are plenty of restaurants and eateries just a short jaunt away. Plus, if you are down for a longer walk, it is an amazing spot to start your adventure in North End or to explore a few Freedom Trail spots. On the whole, yes, a very enjoyable stay. And should I be lucky enough to return to the area, I will for sure keep the Kimpton Marlowe in mind.

If I lived in Boston, I would become a member so that I could visit at will, even if only for few hours at a time. I am particularly interested in the impressionists, and John Singer Sargent, so I kept mostly to the 2nd floor. The museum is well organized, and there are staff floating around to answer any questions (one staffer even offered some tips to reduce the glare when taking a photo of a certain painting). I had checked out of my hotel so I had baggage with me (don't we all)...MFA has a convenient bag check. I also purchased a sizeable book from the bookshop and the staff put it in a box for me to keep it from being damaged during travel. I saw one temporary exhibit that was a nicely curated mix of multimedia art, and I also enjoyed seeing some of the rooms presented in a gallery style so that I could truly appreciate modern display methods. Six hours here went by in a flash, and I will definitely be back to see more of the MFA's vast collection. p.s. The equestrian sport of polo came from Persia?? Loved this fact! I also really enjoyed the time put into the object labels and the stories they told. "The most outrageous series of ferocious daubs that any slanderer of Venice could possibly imagine," a quote from a critic describing Renoir's Grand Canal, Venice, made me snort laugh out loud!

Wow, this is a tough review to write because how do you review a venue that can be no frills and institutional for a work meeting or gorgeously decorated and dazzling for a nighttime wedding reception? Lucky for me, I attended an amazing, perfect wedding reception at the Seaport World Trade Center in the Lighthouse Ballroom. What I liked about the Lighthouse Ballroom is that it feels like you are in a glass cube and it has awesome views of the city to the north. I also liked that those same windows look out on the historic Commonwealth Pier building (which is now the World Trade Center Boston building) just across the way. To make this great space spectacular, the bride picked elegant linens, nice furniture and lovely lighting. The venue is convenient to all of the hotels in the Seaport district. The conference space/ballrooms are technically part of the adjacent Seaport Hotel but other hotels are just a few blocks away.

The guided tour of Otis House really worked for me; when I took it I felt as if I'd been…read moretransported back to the time when this was the Otis family's Boston home. Our tour group was comprised of only a few people, and that made it easy for my friend and me to ask the guide multiple questions as we went along. She not only didn't mind the questions, but our obvious interest caused her to focus the ongoing tour on some of the things we asked about. One of the things that's very different about touring Otis House vs. many other historical houses in Boston is the fact that visitors are not confined to an area encircled by ropes. Instead you're allowed to walk around freely in the rooms, get close to the furniture, and really absorb the splendor of the house. I highly recommended that you take the time to pay a visit here!

My wife and I love to take historical house tours because they are usually pretty interesting, and it usually gives us an excuse to have a date without a lot of people talking during a movie or bothering us in general. The house was fairly large and about 2/3 of it was accessible to the public. It stared off with about a 15 minute slide show of old time Boston, which was very interesting. There were three other women on the tour with us and the tour guide was older and seemed to love what she did in her retirement years. The house was furnished with wallpaper that matched what the family had and furniture from that era. The area use to be the red light district of town, kind of the bottom end of Beacon Hill towards the North End of town. They actually moved the house back a little when they widened the road. Otis left the decorating to his wife, which was out of character for the time, and she did a wonderful job. There were a lot of sitting rooms and a huge dining room because they liked to entertain. They had a few false doors to make the rooms look even and mirrors in a lot of rooms, because it showed wealth at the time. The upper levels were more extravagant because at the time there was a great deal of dust on the street and the lower levels got a little dark. A very interesting 45 minute tour, we over head the tour guide say to another worker "They didn't ask any questions." Small complaint, if we didn't ask any questions, how about fill some of your speaking points with previously asked questions? Fun part of the day though.
