CENTRALLY LOCATED DEPT STORE IN OLD QUEBEC…read more During our visit to Quebec City, we dropped by the Simons department store that is centrally located in Old Quebec on Cote de la Fabrique. It is near the Notre Dame Basilica de Quebec. Simons is a very small and quiet department store. Convenient for the tourist who forgot to pack something or now needs warmer clothing for the cold Quebec weather. We were surprised that Simons did not have a small giftware section where we might purchase a unique souvenir of our visit to Old Quebec that would not end up being a dusty tchotchke.

The staff were very friendly: digging out an unpriced, untested vintage portable record player for me to try and when it worked giving me a totally fair price on it. Don't let Québec Urbain's web site fool you: They're not just a trendy fashion boutique…read more Oh sure, they have plenty from brands like Desigual (trendy, colorful fashion), Pook (hoodies and fleece), Adidas (needs no introduction), Tilley (hats), and Robin Ruth (travel, "casual lifestyle" clothes), and hip-brand sunglasses. With profiles in publications like the Quebec City daily paper Le Soleil (https://bit.ly/2Fa0zmm), it's a hard to ignore Québec Urbain's role in the local fashion scene. If you are fashionable and young and have some money to spend, you'll definitely love Québec Urbain. However, in my humble opinion, the heart of Québec Urbain is more in the "Québec" than the "Urbain." Shhh ... don't say it out loud, but Québec Urbain is kinda sorta in some ways ... a "gift shop." But a "gift shop" in kindest and highest-quality sense of the word. For one, Québec City gives themselves constant reminders of the Nordiques, their long-departed NHL hockey team (1995). As far a I saw, nobody in town provides more Nordiques gear -- and more fashionable ensembles to wear your gear -- than at Québec Urbain. The store just generally LOVES Québec itself. I haven't seen the Q word on so many hats, t-shirts, sweaters, snow globes, scarves, mug and cups, plaques, keychains, pens, and other ephemera then I saw here. And if you dig on the that beautiful azure flag of Québec called "Fleurdelisé," you'll find plenty of it in many form and fashion at Québec Urbain. Then there are some cool, somewhat out-of-place knick-knacks: Christmas ornaments, dreamcatchers, nutcrackers, big animal wood carvings, lawn ornaments, and the requisite maple syrup products section. While some prices are ludicrous, all of the items are worth a long, hard look. If you wanted to find a store to symbolize Québec (both the Provence and the city), you'd be hard pressed to find a better representation than Québec Urbain!

It's located in a very walkable area of Quebec City that's surrounded by countless specialty shops and cafes, and I wish I had more time (and more money) to spend in this awesome shop! It's crowded inside. It's very crowded. The store isn't really all that large, but they manage to put three store's worth of merchandise in one small location. Wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling, it's all merchandise. The merchandise is crazy and awesome. There are vinyl records, games, comics, vintage signs and post cards, ages-old memorabilia, and more stuff than I could adequately remember to include. It was, of course, the vinyl record display outside the store that caught my attention. The staff was awesome and spoke both French and English. (I applaud the fact that so many people spoke both, when Americans (myself included, but I do know a fair amount of Spanish) tend to master only one language). Magasin Général P.L. Blouin is an amazing, charming, memorabilia filled shop that I wish wasn't so far away.

Low pressure souvenir shopping environment…read more This was the most comfortable store to shop in out of 10 stores that I shopped in. Also reasonable prices. Kind of disorganized but I liked the low key environment. The manager was very pleasant and accommodative and went downstairs to bring up more of a hat that I was trying on so that I can compare more on fit and feel. I ended up purchasing a Canada Hat here.

While, I would have been content to just slip the jacket on and check the size, the friendly woman working in the shop insisted on dressing me in front of a mirror. She showed me all of the countless ways I can style the jacket and gave me very thorough instructions on its care. The jacket was made with excellent detail to quality. I cannot wait for the weather to cool in Chicago so that I can start wearing it.
