What I like about Ultimate Craft is that they offer solid and good quality goods without charging premium prices. By no means, is this a place where they are trying to compete with the yuppie/hipster places on nearby Stoke Newington Church Street. I love coming here as I know that they carry what I need for my current handicraft project.

You can find a whole load of crafts supplies in this shop; it's the ideal place for kiddies supplies or costume materials if you live in Stoke Newington. However if you are willing to shop outside of this area you're better off going to a cheaper store as prices really are very high for low to standard quality supplies. Having said that, my work involves a lot of crafty projects and because I don't have time to source elsewhere I buy from here on a monthly basis. Unfortunately the staff are not interested in looking after their loyal clients and would not even consider a discount when I was buying hundreds of pounds worth of materials. I also had issues with dirty fabric I was told would be fine after a wash... Again, not a commercial effort in sight. In a nutshell, this shop has a wide range of products but is expensive and offers poor customer service.

I was sent on a mission to get some cotton thread, luckily I stumbled across this place. I was greeted by a nice lady who apologised straight away for the messy state of the shop, something I was oblivious to as I thought everything looked in order. There is definitely a charm that this shop possesses. There is an interesting mix of products but I guess it is all fabric related, hence the name. There is also a gallery space that you can hire out for solo or group art shows. Anyway, my trip to Fabrications was a success as I found the exact colours I was sent to get. Out of all the places I went to that sell fabric, thread, wool etc. I found this to be the best, and by far the most delightful. I guess that's Broadway Market for you.

The wool in here is pretty, and everything in here kinda makes me want to take up knitting. The owner is really helpful and friendly, and it's just a really nice place to come and visit. They've got loads of unusual crafts in here like French kitting wheels and giant knitting needles. And enough craft kits for you to make your own things when you leave! Everything is well priced, and you'll find any kind of gift for just about any kind of person. I had my eye on a knitted giraffe last time I popped in to say hi. The hanemade items are gorgeous, and I'm sure if I was more crafty, I'd give this place five stars. It's a great little venue, on a lovely, somewhat undiscovered street. Come here quick before Broadway Market gets as trendy as Columbia Road. It's fab.

I came in with a friend who was inquiring about a certain pattern, and the girl working was extremely friendly and as helpful as could be - even though her advice meant we didn't end up needing to buy anything... Perhaps what makes this store especially unique is their fantastical window displays, made entirely of, you guessed it - yarn. Apparently there's a whole slew of "knitting artists" out there... and many of them are on the monthly docket of this shop to deck out the window in whimsical and unbelievably architectural cascades of yarn. Last month it was a (large!) knitted sink and toilet... this month its a wooly version of a snowman. The shop offers classes... now, I'm not exactly one to bother knitting a scarf... but a truly ambitious and artistic construction of woven fiber is a slightly different and more enticing story... for £40 I can join one of their classes for "knitters and crocheters who have visions!" Hmmm....

As a keen crafter who grew up in jumpers hand knitted and handed down by me ma I don't think it's anything special. Went in to check it out and the attendant was pretending she didn't notice us (2 people) this is hard to believe as you can almost see a red stripe round the walls where someone tried to swing a cat. When the attendant finally acknowledged us with a face like someone had dropped a stitch we had just about seen all of the meagre ammount of items on sale. I think they do 'knitting circles' in there too. In such a small space it would be the ideal way to pass on knits. Get yourself up the Roman Road nearby for bargain haberdashery and a fairly good sewing shop with a lovely chap who repairs machines.

Unfortunately I never got much further than the Blue Peter school of glitter glue so a lot of the stock in this shop goes a bit over my head. Sticking to what I can understand, Cowling and Wilcox has a really nice card and gift selection with a bit more personality than anything you'll find in Clinton's. The writing sets are particularly stylish although they can be quite expensive. Similarly, they have a great selection of Moleskin diaries and books but these can cost anything upwards of £15. On the other hand they have a great selection of arty presents for kids which all seem very reasonably priced and a lot of fun too for that matter! I defy anyone to be too old for face-paints. Cowling and Wilcox is a lovely shop which is well worth a look around if you're in need of anything a bit arty or looking for a more personal present for that difficult someone.

To top it off the staff are very helpful and inspiring if stuck for colour choices or alternative solutions to presentation.

One day I had to go to class at London Met when suddenly I realized I had never purchased a notebook for it. For our written assignment in class, it would have been catastrophic. Holloway Stationers swooped in wearing its Super Man cape to save the day. Turns out I didn't need the notebook and actually didn't take one note the entire semester, but nonetheless the Stationers were there for me! Staffed by some lovely folks, you feel at Stationer home when you enter here. These aren't the type of people who will staple your hand when you aren't looking. They'll staple your heart with joy (still would hurt, perhaps worse). Anyways, definitely hit up Holloway Stationers for your stationary needs around the Lower Holloway area of London. If you are unsure about what they may stock, give them a call and they are happy to tell you what they have and what they charge.
