London Art, currently decorated with the sweetest Christmas display that does involve those old paper-link chain things you made in primary school, has more cool bits and pieces that you can imagine. Papers, glues, calligraphy pens, pencils...you name it, they've got it. Heaven.

As we know, indie shops can be hit or miss, since they tend to fit the owner's tastes...but I have to say, this shop had me wanting to buy ALL THE THINGS and start up many new crafts. (Restrained myself, as I had limited luggage space and Parisian craft shops on the itinerary.) Yarn and apparel fabrics were the main attractions for me--I picked up some cotton that later became a skirt, and a couple balls of bulky British yarn that are now keeping a friend's head warm in Toronto. I also added notions, markers, iron-ons, and paper goods to my craft arsenal. (I don't normally do paper stuff but how could I not buy giant cross-stitch paper??) I was super impressed by the machine parts collection--who knew that many feet existed?! I probably walked the whole store 3x to make sure I wasn't missing anything I couldn't live without. Anyway, amazing stock aside, the owner is incredibly sweet & kind. We had a nice little chat about the shop, and she graciously shared some business tips. Since that visit, I've been following her Instagram and *really* wish I had managed to take a class when I was in town. (Now I know for next time!!) The shop is bright, cheery, inviting, and beautifully pulled together. If you're in London and you or someone you love is a crafter, swing by this store. You're bound to find something(s) wonderful.

The store is small but the selection of cards, stationary, wrapping is pretty good. A bit more elite than the Carlton's cards that's down the road and the Sainsbury's that's up the road. I've bought a fun sparkler candle from here for my boyfriend's birthday that was great. There's a great selection of Valentine's day cards there now if you're in the area!

They had a space in the back reserved for us where we could comfortably be with I think up to 20 people. They asked that parents not stay for the party because of space, but that wasn't a problem as they did a great job looking after us and the girls were (mostly) well-behaved. They clearly are used to parties and both Sophie and James helped to keep our group of 13 girls all working on coloring/painting their plates and keeping everyone in a great mood. Everyone was cheerful and seemed to have a great time. The actual painting took about an hour and they set things up to let us to cake a things after. We had the space for two hours.

I booked ahead for Saturday afternoon, which turned out to be a good call because it was packed, though I have walked in on quieter days. I think if you can, try to go when it's more offpeak, because then the staff have more time to explain the techniques, and there aren't as many noisy kids around. However, I never felt pressured to hurry up - I think once you're in you can basically stay. There are soooo many choices of things to paint. Obviously mugs, plates, bowls and the like, but also all kinds of ornaments and intricate vases. There are probably about 100 different options! I think the bigger items get expensive pretty quickly though, so double check how much things will cost if it's not clear. However, I actually think it's a bit of a bargain. For example, I've painted a mug before, which cost £11 for the mug and about £6 for the studio fee (which you pay for the day, so if you wanted to paint several things you only pay the studio fee once). That's £17 for a super fun few hours, plus an actual mug you've painted to take home. They glaze the items and kiln them (I think) so you have to come back to collect them a week later. My one issue is that of the four mugs my boyfriend and I have painted there, three of them were cracked or lost handles within 3 months of getting them. Meanwhile I have a mug I painted at a friend's 7th birthday that is just fine! I don't know if we're just unlucky but I think the quality of the ceramic might be a bit low. However, would still definitely do again!

One star is generous for this disgraceful company! I placed an order for a card to pick up on the…read moresame day for a critically ill friend. I received an email confirmation of my order that day. However, after a week of no reply, I received another email saying they had closed BEFORE I had placed my order, for refurbishments, and wouldn't be reopening until 17 days after I had placed my order!! Now my friend may never make it to receive their card. When I explained my situation the shop responded heartlessly and blamed me for not knowing they had closed - when there was no hint of a message at the time to tell customers! I will never go there again and I recommend any other franchise shop of Snappy Snapps over this one!

We got a bespoke frame and the staff member who helped us was very knowledgeable, making suggestions about colour and style and able to back up his choices. He talked us through different matting and glass options; we've had our ketubah up on our wall for a few months now and it looks just as beautiful as the day we picked it up.
