1821 Gallery - MIchael Garcia "ENSO" art opening at 1821

I have two of his earlier art work painted on recycled wooden grape drying trays to make raisins which is not only a cool way to recycle, but also using local materials that make direct connection to the environment surrounding the artist where he lives, thinks, breathes. Famous Japanese author, Mishima Yukio, is depicted in a series of portrait head images where each following image slowly progressively fades away. The second is a golden wash looking a lot like a Rothko color field. It's very Zen-like in creating a contemplative, nonexistential mood. Wishing Michael Garcia great success for this current showing. I tried to go Sunday afternoon only to find out it isn't open then. Look for opening time on my photos below.

They have numerous rooms that are rented out as studios to individual artists, and a few rooms that simply showcase the owners' collection and favorites. The main room has one featured gallery for a season. Each room was filled with interesting, beautiful, quirky art that I wouldn't hesitate to buy and hang in my house (in the future... when I have a house...). Even though this gallery is slightly tucked away on a side street and easy to miss, it would be worth your while to come check them out on your own time, or at least during ArtHop (you might get a chance to get a delicious frozen treat from Donna at Ooh De Lolli too!). I would be happy to have an event with them in the future, and I wish them all the best in keeping this beautiful location alive and well Downtown.

Lol. The years have passed and I decided to check it out tonight. What compelled me to relive Art Hop was my friends little fashion show he was throwing at Broadway studios. I wanted to show my support of course. I then began meandering through the streets of downtown and I am in awe of what it has become! Art hop has evolved into this huge event that is seemingly spread out for miles. Generally, it is a younger crowd as it always was but tonight it was nice to see people of all ages, backgrounds and families with children. There are lots of food trucks and live music, break dancers and djs. Tons of local art, FREE goodies and wine, I surprisingly really enjoyed myself and got to catch up with old friends. Art Hop, I will see you again!

When I think of arthop, I just remembered a few blocks in tower showing pieces of art l,lol. As of…read more2022, it has really grown into something amazing for downtown Fresno and stretches for miles. It's definitely a great event for every first Thursday of the month. I hate when people say Fresno sucks and there's nothing to do. What I can say is that downtown Fresno has been reborn. I've been to art hop twice this year. The first time I parked near South of Shaw Beer Company and oh my goodness, that street is starting to become like Fulton. I love the rebirth of downtown. I walked my dogs from Broadway, down to Vanness and Calaveras, all the way down to Kern and Fulton. Every corner was a vendor of some sort, aguas frescas, bbqs, churro man, clothing, candles, rugs, earrings, you name it, they probably have it. Shout out to my brother's small business, Old Habits LLC. Not only that, the brewery district where Tioga Sequoia, Full Circle Brewery and Modernist are are a part of it. Their beers are some of the best. In addition, there are tons of food trucks parked along the blocks as well as the new sunstereo warehouse with the storefronts. It was like being on a vacation in this town. The second time, I went with my husband. This time, we paid $7 to park in the garage on Tulare and Fulton. It's easier that way. We stayed in the half from Tulare to C street. We walked all the way to where Bitwise was (fyi, that area needs a little love). I got a hat from my brother's booth, some Cuban food from Havana Cafe. I got a ropa vieja bowl and my husband got the las cubanitas chicken sandwich. I also got dog treats from Bentley's Barkery and got my dog some overalls. I do want to go back to the little Mexican store to get some shoes. Overall, if you can make it out there, please do. One less star because you will walk into a plume of marijuana smoke every now and then and smell some urine on the sidewalk. However, definitely something to do every first Thursday of the month.

If in life you can enjoy simple pleasures, are you not better off? Yes! And so, how rewarding was…read moreit to visit the Studio and meet with the most interesting Diane Johnso-Mendes, owner of the gallery? Very! What a refreshing and wonderful time I had learning about Diane, art teacher background, and many of the various artists who have displayed work at the gallery. For me, the highlight of anything happening in the Tower Area. And are you getting a look at the breath and diversity of work flowing through on display??? It's what, if nothing else you should be doing when in the area. So impressed was I that I picked up 2 works from one of the artists in the area. Area to be filled in here: The works I chose are unique and resonated with my unique personality and Moon Base Alpha aesthetic. Something not produced anywhere else on the planet that I get to enjoy for years to come. While both stimulating and sedating, the art here, the crafts, different materials used, got my juices flowing and felt like a luxury spa for the mind. I left refreshed, delighted and feeling lucky. Mix it up guys, get in here for your spa treatment that works on the inside and the outside. You'll walk away feeling like you spend your time well off the beaten path... Thanks you local artists chasing your passions and making incredible things of beauty and worth that make our/my life better. And as always, thank you Lord for the resources to take a couple of these works home with me! -G

Makes you feel like you can see the art inside your own home when it's displayed like this. A great selection of a TON of different artists - I can see why this place was voted to win some awards. The art itself is absolutely five stars--beautiful, thoughtful, and well curated. Unfortunately,…read moreour experience with the staff completely overshadowed the visit. We came with our kids, including my 10-year-old daughter, who is an artist and was genuinely excited to be there. Instead of feeling welcomed, we were treated like our presence was a nuisance. The staff was extremely strict and repeatedly barked orders at us, with very little customer service or warmth. In one area that had children's blocks, our kids were playing and got a little loud. Wanting to be considerate, my husband closed the door so they wouldn't disturb others. There were no signs anywhere saying the door couldn't be closed. A staff member then came in, visibly upset, and yelled at us--again, with no clear explanation or signage to justify the reaction. Later in the gift shop, another staff member sharply reprimanded my kids for leaning on the glass. Once again, no signs were posted, and the tone was unnecessarily harsh. None of this felt kid-friendly or welcoming. It's unfortunate, because the art and the artists deserve better representation. The staff's behavior made it hard to enjoy the exhibits at all, and it completely turned us off from what could have been a great family experience. We had even considered a membership, but after being treated this way, we will not be returning. The art is wonderful. The customer service is not. ### In response to the owner's reply: your response reinforces exactly why we will not be returning. Your tone comes across as condescending and punitive, with the majority of your response focused on what we supposedly did wrong rather than how your staff handled the situation. Saying you will "talk to your staff" reads like an afterthought when roughly 90% of your response places blame on us. We are fully aware that this is not a children's museum or an interactive museum. The fact that you felt the need to explain this only adds to the condescension. Our children were respectful, quiet, and well-behaved. They were not running, not acting out, and not treating the space inappropriately. In the designated children's area, their voices briefly rose while playing together. Out of courtesy to other guests, my husband closed the door--unaware it was not meant to be closed or that it locks automatically, as there was no signage indicating this. The staff's response was unnecessarily aggressive. You offer a family pass, which implies families are welcome. A family-friendly environment should not make parents and children feel like a nuisance. Because of both the original experience and the tone of your response, I am updating my review from two stars to one star.

Their exhibits change periodically, so if you wait a few months to go again there is usually something new to see. The staff is very welcoming and kind. Right now they have a kid exhibit which is cute, they had some art by Diego Rivera. They have a very interesting cemetery piece. I think my fave was The fruit of life and The contemporary art exhibit, using stones from Zimbabwe (I can't remember the name). They have an outdoor area where you can sit under trees and they also have sculptures out there as well. They also have a great little gift shop! Definitely check it out and support Fresno's Art museum. Afterwards you can go to lunch at Sam's Italian deli across the street or Thai Phucket near by!
