While the sound of "suburbs" may make some cringe, this city is safe, quiet, and just a five minute drive from Downtown. What you'll find here: - Low home insurance rates, as the city has a paid fire department - Frequent visibility of police patrol - St. Elizabeth Hospital - The city's branch of the Campbell County Public Library - Fort Thomas Schools, offering some of the best education and extracurriculars in the area - Well-paved sidewalks that connect all over town. It's a very walkable community, but most of the city is residential. - A handful of local eateries: sandwich shops, coffee, fancy restaurants, and even a candy shop. - A town center filled with white-collar local businesses, from dance studios, wedding planners, lawyers and more. - The Fort Thomas Museum, focusing on the city's Civil War history. - City architecture is uniform, reflecting a cobblestone look of the 1800s. You won't find obtrusive corporate signs here. - Grand, luxurious mansions, 1800s homes, and upscale apartments. - Gated properties and nuclear families Downsides: - Fort Thomas Schools tacks on an additional fee to utility bills, regardless if you have kids in the school system. - Gas stations are taxed heavily for being in Fort Thomas, causing prices to be at least 10 cents higher than at the Kroger gas station down the street in Newport City Limits.

While I understand that Braxton Brewery is the one sponsoring this event, and the Mainstrauss…read moresociety association has shut its doors, I feel like this festival fell flat. It was only on one street really and in the park. Growing up I remember there being rides, games, more vendors, and more German Beer. Where was the German Beer??? The whole reason why I come to these events is for the delicious beer like Hefweizen, Weiss Beer, and Dunkels. It was all lame Braxton beers and a handful of overpriced cocktail vendors. They also had country music playing which REALLY didn't make it feel German at all. Cmon Braxton! Get it together, you call this a German Festival?? It felt rushed, and Hodgepodge. Also, why is it only on one street! Mainstrauss is huge and used to have vendors and shops and food all the way down to the fountain. I give it 2 stars. Maybe it'll grow, but this should be a way bigger event with rides and more games and activities for families and kids, like it used to be in the 90s and 2000s. I recommend expanding into more than just a few shops selling the same candle, jewelry, and incense merch as well.

However, I think Maifest is little more about beer and brats, but fun nonetheless. The 2008 event kicks off Friday, May 16th and runs until Sunday, May 18th. If the weather is nice, Maifest will be packed as tightly as Northern German sardines. Good luck trying to navigate with a stroller or wheelchair. Yet, given Cincinnati's unpredictable spring weather, chances are pretty good that there will at least be scattered showers, scaring away half of the crowd to a number that's manageable. Drinkers, your best bet is to purchase a collectors mug, which can be refilled at vendors' booths for a discount over individual beer price. And you're making Mother Nature proud. The beer selection is mostly domestic (unfortunately), but Warsteiner's there to keep things semi-authentic. For families, there are tons of food booths and artisans selling their wares, even "gypsies" reading your palms or tarot cards. Kiddies will love the carnival rides and games set up in the 5th street parking lot. Oompa bands and men in Lederhosen rock the crowd Bavarian style, but if that's not your style you can pop into any of the MainStrasse bars for more contemporary jams. There will invariably be someone who can't hold their liquor and will embarrass themselves terribly in front of a crowd of 150,000. But you'll walk away with a renewed sense of Schadenfreude. Prost!

Resembling some sort of Greek or Roman architecture (not sure) this is a stunning mural. It was created in 1983 by Richard Haas and restored roughly 20 years ago with funding help from Kroger Co. A documentary about the restoration of this mural titled 'The Spirit of Cincinnatus Growing with Cincinnati' was also made and entered into several film festivals. This is truly a must see mural.

The mural's actual title is Homage to Cincinnatus and over looks a parking lot. It is on the side of the downtown Brotherhood Building. It was painted by Richard Haas in 1983 and looks amazing. They did do some touchups in 2015 which was a collaborative effort between Hass and ArtWorks. The painters claimed that they almost had to start from scratch, which explains why it looks so good. It was commissioned by the Kroger Company in honor of their centennial. The mural depicts a statue of the city's namesake, Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, in front of a palatial building. It demands your attention. It has an antique feel to it. There is some in metered street parking in a reasonable waking distance. . There are also commercial garages and lots you can park in, but they are pretty pricy. I just pulled into the lot that it overlooked and got my fill and then quietly left. Anyway, as with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other murals in the area or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. I just did a mural tour of the downtown area. There are a ton within about a half mile of each other.
