I've seen lots of bright and colorful birds here especially when they migrate down during the colder season. There are some stagnant ponds inside so you have to walk in a bit further to get to the flowing Arroyo Colorado River. I love the various little gardens/sanctuaries throughout the park (such as an edible garden and a peace walk). Be careful of coming here after a rain (our shoes were CAKED with mud) and beware of the multiple ant hills! There are little sheds here that look kind of sketch full of graffiti in vulgar language you don't want your kid to see lol so I wish they can maintain it a bit better. Overall it's a great nature escape and I've come back multiple times!

It has many gazebos to picnic in in private and two large one for big party's next to the water. It's clean and spacious. It has a huge waterfall next to a another water feature for the kids to cool off in the valley heat. At night they light up the waterfall and looks beautiful. Has clean restrooms and security guard in the evenings. You can bring bicycles as they is a track all around the park.

They have programs like Natural history tours,Native plant walks,. The Intro to Native Plant Gardening sounds cool . Many birding programs. I went there for a event in the evening and sitting in the beautiful courtyard for a formal dinner. The venue doesn't offer food any you need to be use a caterer. Most people visit to watch birds and pay the nominal admission fee.

Boasting lighted fishing piers, picnic areas and a playground, boat ramp with fish cleaning stations, and nature trail, there are also 35 full-hookup RV sites. These waterfront spots attract many "Winter Texans" a.k.a. "Snowbirds who drive their RV's down to Texas during the cold months and hang out. The park was created by Cameron County, Texas to enhance boating and fishing on the river, which it has done. When I came by on a boat touring the Arroyo River area, the parking lot was full of big trucks who had towed in some boats to launch. My tour guide told me the trout was biting like crazy this time of year. Also the area hunting is pretty good too: wild turkey and pigs, deer, and the exotically tasty nilgai, among others. Despite the ideal location for all kinds of outdoor activities, the Adolph Thomas Park is a little on the small side. This is a multi-use park and there's the rub: on weekends the place is heavily used by anglers, boaters, and locals for picnics and hiking. During the week, it can be quiet. The RV park is nice but I have heard that some RV-ers complain it is smallish- and cramped. Also, when I used the restrooms, I noticed RED ANTS all around! Yikes! For those reasons, I deducted 1 YELP STAR. But the mesquite growing along the river give the Adolph Thomae Park a scenic feel and the staff keeps a pretty good eye on the area. Looks like a perfect place to come recreate in the great outdoors to me.

Every so often late at night you might even get to hear the donkey that is kept across the arroyo. It cracked us up. DO keep the lid on your icechest bungeed down or you will wake to an enterprising racoon or two helping themselves. I love this place, Its beautiful and whether you want to fish in the day or under the lighted piers at night, you can't go wrong. There is a charge for pitching a tent, but pay it... you get the code for the showers and save the park ranger from hassling you if you have pitched a tent.

We went on the long…read moredrive from South Padre Island to visit Boca Chica to see where the gulf meets the Rio grande but ended up arriving just as Elon was rolling a rocket out to his launch site so we were in a unique traffic jam and then Boca Chica was shut down for the day so we didn't get to visit it but seeing the big rocket and all the pics and video we got were still an awesome thing! I even referred them to the Texas State Parks Web site which list All Texas State Parks. So just be aware this area is part of the lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge! Rio Grande Valley State Park! This place is in sort of…read morethese marshes, low lying fields in the RGV outside of Brownsville. We came in for a hike along their shortest trail, which wound through scrub brush, mesquite trees and the overwhelming sound of cicadas. We saw lots of armadillos on our hike, and several strange, menacing looking birds. The park has a nice ranger station with a gift shop where you can rent binoculars and get patches and other gear that you'll need to camp and hike along the park's many trails. Be sure to reserve ahead of time on the website. The park is quiet, other than the insects. When we went, it has hot as heck, and nobody else was on the trails. They do offer a few bird blinds, or places to relax in some shade and observe the birds. There seemed to be a planetarium or telescope or something, but the armadillos were preventing us from investigating this.
