Now that I've been to the shop a few times, allow me to update my review. My boy Nilo is the kinda barber all guys need. Example. I show up asking for a 1992 cut and he says "all good Hec." As he begins he starts to give suggestions like, "so how about a #2 taper Hec?" I know enough to understand that this is the type of suggestion that is more like "this is what's best for you bud." The cut gets deeper into it and again, he says "You know hec, how about we do a taper fade on the side? I think that would look super clean bro." I just go with the flow and let my barber do what he thinks best. This is one of the benefits of going to a barber who knows your hair, who knows what's best for you, even when you may not. When I got home my lady said "baby, you look so handsome." Let's put it this way, had I cut my hair MY way, she would have said "Oh. It looks good babe.... what's for dinner?" The shop is clean, they have DirecTV on the giant flat screen, this is a really great spot to get cut. Make an appointment. It's possible that you could walk in and get cut, it's just not likely. read more

Kicked out of the chair because they double booked! I booked an appointment and morning of, got a message asking if I could move it back an hour. I said I couldn't and heard no response, so I showed up for my appointment. When I got there, I was seated immediately, told Edwin what I wanted and he combed my hair through. His "regular" shows up, so he kicks me out of the chair. I'm told to wait because another barber is waiting on someone who might not show. That person never shows, but the other barber disappears and I'm told they can't help me (did he decide to go on break? No explanation was given). There was zero effort to correct the problem, other than a lame "sorry" and an offer to give me someone's number so when I book again this won't happen. Like I plan on booking again... I have had my regular in downtown for over 2 years. I drove past this place many times and always wanted to try getting my hair cut here. I made up my mind and took an appointment. I got the haircut with Ren. This guy really gave the best first haircut. He asked me every time for every little detail because he was cutting my hair for the first time. The length, the style , side burns , back neck. He did a great job. I wondered why I was not looking at the mirror all the time during the haircut but it didnt matter . Go see Thomas Baum. Guy is solid. I wear a suit most days during the week. Weekends I'm in board shorts and flip flops. Thomas takes care of my professional image, but also styles my hair so I can be my individual self. Very consultative. Super flexible with scheduling. Easy to text with and always super responsive. Good conversation when you've got the extra time to spend in his chair, but can also clean you up in less than 15 minutes if you're in a rush. Highly recommend. The barbershop itself is also solid. Julien the owner is a great- super professional and also quick to make you laugh. The whole crew in general is great. Everyone makes you laugh in there. Go in there and try not to laugh- you can't. I don't like giving low star reviews - but when you walk away with an icky feeling, you need to let others know. I made an appointment, still had to wait 15 min. My main concern was keeping most of my hair & just a simple trim was in order, however I came out with hair so short there was no use in combing it. I told him exactly what I wanted - the barber reviewed what I said, which I thought was spot on, but then cut my hair how he wanted & didn't listen. He kept re-doing parts of my hair as he progressed; which would work if you're creating art work or creating a building; but once you cut it ~NEWS FLASH~ It's GONE! The fade was choppy & he seemed to purposely jiggle the mirror when he eventually showed me the back - I thought it was from the awesome Bass of the music ((*once I got home I found out why & saw several cuts in the hairline on the back, not scars or anything, but from his razor)). Afterwards - despite my thoughts that a light trim would cost about or less than the sign posted (*which was on the rather high side anyway) he asked me to dig out a small bucket of Gold to pay him for shotty work - probably because he knew by giving me that terrible cut I would never come back once my friends slammed me for such a Wonky cut. I obliged, as we didn't discuss any cost upfront, so that's on me (I should have & will in the future discuss how much my haircuts should run). On the down side, the music is SO loud in there, most of the time he was talking to me or me talking to him & I had to have things repeated (no I'm not a deaf man, nor partially hearing impaired of any sort). These guys are sooooooo full of themselves, that I really wanted to like them too; but bottom line = bad, terrible, waste of money, poor customer service, they don't listen to your needs/wants & they think they're so impressive that it makes you feel like shooting yourself afterwards because there is no point in you even competing in the human race anymore. read more

They usually never have time for last minute appointments or walk ins because they're already booked a week or two in advance. That's really say something about they're quality of work. Around the Edge is a cool spot to get a haircut. All the barbers, from my experience are cool, chill guys. I can't say how good their cuts are, though, because I've only gotten cuts from Tom. From what I've seen, everything looks good. Good lineups, clean fades. I found the spot because I've been getting cuts from Tom for the past 7 years. I started going to him when he worked at Philgood Cuts (which is also a good spot to check out if San Mateo is too far for you further up the peninsula) and followed him when he moved here. When I started seeing him, I used to just get the basic taper/fade with a lineup. I've been to other spots where the cost is a little bit cheaper, but the cut is nowhere near as clean. Originally, I only thought Tom could do lineups and tapers, but as I've been growing my hair out a little, he's definitely proving he can do a lot more. He not only suggests what would look good, but he gives a nice cut that I haven't gotten from anyone else. The few downsides for me are the distance, and the prices are going up because it's the Bay Area. Have to make a living. But you're definitely getting what you pay for. I have no desire to try any other barbers. If you're looking for a new barber, I definitely recommend hitting up Around the Edge. Tom is also very accommodating. If you contact him early on, he may take you either before or after hours. read more

I am very picky about who cuts my hair, i have issues with barbers. When I plan to cut my hair it is usually in advance to see if Tom is available. He always finds time for when i tell him in advanced. I have to say without him cutting my hair I would choose not to cut it. Now as this fresh new spot in San Mateo is his new home i have to admit that i will be happily commuting to continue to get my hair cut from him. After he was sure we were on the same page, he started to work his magic. He gave me a scissor textured feathered trim on top for a more natural spike, sculpted the sides for a darker look, and finished with a razor on the corners to lighten up the edges. Thomas was nice enough to fit me into his schedule around lunch time. Thomas really knows what he's doing and he uses top of the line products on you. First off, this is a really nice barbershop. It has a proper red white and blue barber pole like all barbershops should, and is extremely clean. It's a real man's spot - dart board, big screen TV, the whole deal. I had been given a jacked up haircut by a much less qualified barber so I went to see if Neelo could fix me up. I was really impressed with his skills, especially since he had to fix someone else's mess. I ended up with a really nice looking haircut. He even cleans up the edges with a straight razor. Neelo is amazing! He has been cutting my sons hair since he was 2 1/2 (almost 4 years) and we have followed him all over San Mateo. We live in San Bruno and I make the trip once a month because it is well worth it. I tried a bunch of different places until we found Neelo. He is patient and takes his time cutting my sons hair and the results are great every time! This shop has plenty of street parking and has a very welcoming environment.
