Arnold Arboretum - Stopping to smell the "roses" - Parks Near Me - Boston, Massachusetts

What a gorgeous place to run. I usually always start at the entrance near the visitors center and run up the road through the arboretum. Occassionally, I use to vary my route and follow the foot paths. One time I discovered a bonzai garden. They have them tucked away in a area that has a collection of vines so you might have to look for it. I think they belonged to Lars Anderson at one time. There is also a group of seqoia pine tree near the entrance. The labels on the trees help to identify the names of the species. If I am ever looking for a place to run or just want to go for a walk, I will visit the arboretum. read more

With the weather breaking, we were looking to find some local trails for us and the dogs (new to the area). Arnold had really good reviews and is nearby. Upon arriving, we were a bit nervous to see all the parked cars lining the entrance. This made us think the park would be very crowded. We were able to find some street parking just outside and were relieved that the park was big enough that it didn't feel crowded at all. The grounds are very well maintained and even had a few streams for the dogs to play and get a drink. Check it out! read more

This is a beautiful tree zoo. - The arboretum is divided into subsections (succulent garden, maples, etc) with informational plaques scattered periodically. - It makes for beautiful photos! I saw a wedding party having a photo shoot here. - If you are travelling from Boston, I suggest biking here! The distance is not too bad, and it was great being able to relax amongst all the nature at the arboretum. - My favorite time to visit is in the Fall, because the temperature is not too cold and not too hot. The Arboretum is a beautiful place to go almost anytime of year. It encompasses such a wide area so be prepared to walk. It's fun to stroll through the different areas. One of my favorites is the rose garden. With the Arboretum's sheer size I'm amazed it continues to be free. Boston is lucky to have it. If it's your first time visiting I highly recommend stopping at the visitor's center first. There's someone there at the main desk who can answer questions and there's a map. read more

Arnold Arboretum - Drew Townson - Parks Near Me - Boston, Massachusetts

Hard to believe that among all of the hustle/bustle of city life exists this beautiful arboretum! The parking for this place can be tricky when the weather's nice so the first time we ended up parking far away and seemingly in the breakdown lane with a long line of other cars. For first time visitors I recommend stopping by the main building Hunnewell where they have free maps and that's where free 90 minute guided tours begin. I believe they also have some other classes you can check such as photography and birdwatching but you will need to pay and register ahead of time. We originally started with a tour but the pace was a bit slow going over the history of the vegetation. We walked around and followed the trails. I've been here only a couple times and have not yet explored the whole place. I've seen couples take wedding and engagement photos here as there are many scenic spots. One of my favorite spots is the tranquil bonsai garden where they have so many different types along with info on their origin. For several of the flowers or trees they give you the option to also dial in to listen to more about who and how it was discovered. My friends and I learned plenty about the Royal Azaleas as those were the only things in bloom early May before Lilac Sunday madness. Really lovely. I only had the chance to amble around a small part of the arboretum, but it is a great space with much to learn, see, do, or not do by just lounging around, haha! There was a good mix of folks doing all of the above. There is a paved road and mulch/rock-based trails to wander around on. Wonderful. read more

Great place for taking relatively short hikes on relatively flat trails. The only downside is the road noise and much to my surprise construction going on within the Arboretum. Although it was not major construction somehow the peace and quiet is a part of an arboretum that I look forward to. read more

Great place to go for a walk. Really pretty and peaceful. Lots of different walkways and trails

You know something... biking in cities is always a little tough... you have to know where the good places are. Sure, there are bike lanes all around... but when you have people driving like New Englanders using said bike lanes can be an unnecessary risk, I would have gone to Boston Common to get the rides in, however, they don't allow bicycles, haven't for over 125 years. Still, even if they did, I find this place superior in many ways. I) Location - Unless you have a park as large as Central Park, it is quite difficult to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life when you have a park in city center. Boston Common is conveniently located, but not quite as serene. There isn't a whole lot of the noise-making traffic jams in the area. There's a few medical centers, some houses, and a lot of other greenery (per Google Maps). You won't feel like you're in the middle of nowhere, but won't feel like you're breathing more exhaust fumes than fresh air. You are still able to get here using Mass Transit too! (Take the Orange line to Forest Hills). II) Cleanliness - What I found awesome, and quite frankly even surprising was how clean this park was. Compared to some of the other parks I've been to, there was very little if any litter. I should mention my visit was somewhere late February early March, so there weren't that many people around. III) Trees - I am not an arborist, and don't know very much about trees at all. I do know that there is an impressive variety of them here. Though greenery was not my focus, I say many dirt paths leading to different gardens and area for those who find trees more fascinating than I do. IV) Biking - This was among the more difficult and fun bike rides I've taken. Some of the hills in this place are quite large and steep, and for someone who is a bit out of shape, the climb was quite tough. On the other side of this is the reward that comes when you get to glide down said hill at pretty high speeds. Do be careful of this by the way, biking at high speeds downhill could end very, very badly. Park's size and layout keeps the ride interesting, but keeps it from being too long (such as the 11 mi long Minuteman bikeway). Paved roads inside are nice and wide! I look forward to returning with by bicycle (or maybe just on foot) when the weather gets warmer, and especially in the fall. read more

The Arnold Arboretum is nestled in plain view stretching from JP to Roslindale. There's something for everyone here. Bike path is escorted by a scenic route leading to the Forest Hills train station. The trees are exotic and brilliantly displays the love of summer when in bloom. You can learn about the species of trees and plants as you stroll the high hills and acknowledge the ever-flowing tiny waterway. Take pictures, including wedding photos, prom and birthday pics. This is a lovely gem along the emerald necklace. I've been wanting to come here for awhile, and finally made it. The place is huge and a single day wouldn't do it justice. If you wanna get away from the city without going to far, this spot is perfect. Just a few steps in and the road's busy noses are drowned away by the swaying trees and buzzing bees. It feels calming to just stroll along the paved pathways in a nice sunny evening. read more

This is a beautiful place to walk around or even jog. I have come here to take photos because the scenery is absolutely beautiful. If you're looking for a good place to take photos then the arboretum is a good place to go. I also love that as you're walking through the arboretum , you can learn more about the trees and flowers. I just love that Arboretum. What a Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury neighborhood gem. I've been here a few times to take a walk and the most beautiful time is to go on Mother's Day when they have the Lilac Festival all the different shapes of purple. It is truly spiritual and a glorious experience. If you have allergies, make sure you take your pills. What I love about the Arnold Arboretum is that they have so many different trees and different Gardens like the Chinese Garden, ponds, and wonderful paths​. It is a great place on a beautiful day to spend the entire time there. It's also a really great place for people who work nearby like the Spaulding Hospital or the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center to just go and take a walk during their lunch break. I love it. read more

The arboretum is like free a outdoor museum that is carefully curated and placed with different plants/trees from around the world. With over 280 acres of land, it's a great place to a walk, bike, reflect, or have a picnic. I'm pretty sure Bob Ross's soul settled here after departing the mortal coil. The Arnold Arboretum is a true oasis for Bostonians looking to decompress or get some exercise. Jogging here is much easier than at Jamaica Pond. It's less crowded, so you won't need to dodge thickets of traffic, and with lots of different paths (pavement, grass, dirt) you can easily go "off-trail" and find empty spaces entirely for yourself. The are flat places to run if you're looking for something smooth, but there are also plenty of hills and slopes if you are trying to build up some serious running stamina. There are a lot of different entrances, so parking is pretty easy. I park on Arborough Road and walk through the gate here in Roslindale. The transition is pretty stark: you'll walk from a quiet but very much residential street into a sun-shaded grove of trees that's positively vibrating with the warbles, trills, and calls of American Goldfinches, Song Sparrows, Cardinals, and more. Inside, you can get a great view of Boston's skyline from Peter's Hill, enjoy the blossoming of lilacs on the JP side, take a moment in front of pre-Revolutionary gravestones back on the Rozzie end, and sneak a legit wild Honeycrisp apple - or two - on your way back out. It's the perfect place to be just the right distance away from the bustle of the city and enjoy some clean air and grand old trees. I walked in here on a beautiful autumn morning while all the world around me was at work. The sky was brimming with stormy clouds and a healthy wind was afoot. In short, rubbish weather to be in a city but the most perfect weather one could ask for to be around trees. I joined the tour that was starting at 1030. Do take a stroll with the tour guides if you're in time for one. The arboretum has a lovely collection of trees and an equally interesting set of stories, for some of them have come from afar. The visitor's centre (which is also where the tours start from) is at the northern end of the arboretum - a brisk 15 minute walk from the Forest Hills subway station. read more

The Arboretum gives a breath of fresh (oxygenated) air to densely populated Jamaica Plan and Roslindale. The entrance off the Arborway, closer to Jamaica Plain, attracts crowds with its proximity to the T and its showy plants. The Peters Hill side tends to offer more contemplative space, provided that dog-walkers abide by the on-leash-only policy. A skyline view of downtown Boston rewards those who climb the highest hills.
