My favorite Armstrong location. It's easy to get to and centrally located. Parking is always easy and there are tons of employees to help you. I like coming here for my plants because they have a great store return/exchange policy. I also visit for any plant health related questions. I recently bought some lady bugs for my garden and they are thriving! My favorite part of coming here is for the succulents. The vairetals they have to offer on-site aren't the rarest but they are definitely the healthiest/happiest. Any and all of their Echevaria varietals grow really well. I bought English Lavender here about a year ago. It's doing very well. I bought a Fuschia here about few weeks ago and I left it in the scorching sun for too long. It's wilted pretty heavily but I got it into some nice morning sun. It's much happier. I'm thankful I had someone here I could talk to and figure out what I did wrong. I guess "Lifetime guarantee" does Not mean lifetime guarantee at the Costa Mesa store. Scott the manager was firm and slightly rude about honoring the companies warranty on shrubs I had purchased- even added I shouldn't be having a plant cemetery or something around that.. who says that? Needless to say I am turned off by broken promises made when purchasing shrubs and will look elsewhere for my trees/ plants. What a disappointment. *Update- just spare yourself the trouble and shop at the Newport Beach store down the way! Jennifer the manager there was more than accommodating and helpful! What can this particular Armstrong location do to improve? Let's start by inclusion! There were about 6 staff inside and 2 at the register & no one seems to see me. No one greeted, welcomed or asked if I needed help, which I made it obvious that I did. Whenever I made attempts to ask for help the staff would walk fast and assist someone else, even when the customers were already being helped. Hopefully corporate or customer relations can look into these reviews to improve their staff. I was very poorly treated by the assistant manager, Jose, on Saturday, Mother's Day weekend. I placed a special order for 4 Eden climbing roses. From the start he was rude and off putting, he didn't was to help with this special order as if it's a burden to him. He took forever to place the order and told me I had to pay for it now. I was surprised because I've place a special order for 3 pots of Eden at this same location and 6 Edens at the Newport Beach store. Both times they took the invoice and told me what the total will be but I only pay at pick up. I ended up buying a total of 8 pots of Eden roses within the past month. Jose was very rude and dismissive towards me. He said "you pay now or no order!" I was a bit shocked at how he treated me. I asked for his manager who happens to be there. The manager was also not nice. He's very condescending the way he spoke to me saying that he's been with the company for 25yrs and Jose has been working at Armstrong for over 30yrs. It is company policy that you pay in full for a special order. Now if this was the case I wouldn't mind paying for the order but I know for a fact it is not since I placed 2 special orders at Costa Mesa and Newport Beach. Both times they took the order and the invoice but I paid when I pick up. I ended up escalating is matter to Monte the president of the company, hopefully he can look into this incident because their assistant manager and their store manager are awful, rude, dismissive and condescending. I would like to say that the entire staff at the Costa Mesa location are all really friendly with the exception of those 2 managers. Everyone at the Newport Beach location is hospitable and helpful. I will never step foot to this location again. Save yourself the agony and go to Roger's garden or Armstrong in Newport. If you go here, please be advised with Jose is horrible and the store manager is just as bad. read more

I particularly enjoy this Armstrong location for the landscaping and pathway they've done surrounding the property. While Armstrong associates do typically plant features, this one perhaps showcases skill better than others. Both entrances are a bit willy-nilly and not the easiest to get into as they are off of major streets, but once you're in there's ample parking. For the important part: the plant selection is quite expansive as this is one of larger stores. They even carry small staghorn ferns, which are a more unusual sighting. Keep an eye out as they sometimes run deals on certain items, like bonsai fertilizer for example. I have purchased an olive tree topiary (a fruiting variety called olea Europa) from this store along with garden dust to deal with an annoying outbreak of fungus gnats on my miniature African violets. I have been a customer of Armstrong for over forty years. The store manager Jared is an obnoxious, overbearing; complete jerk. I am a life-long gardener who was educated in high school in the Future Farmers of America program for horticulture. Currently, I am a University of California Master Gardener. On my home property I have 21 apple trees, 18 avocados trees, 16 citrus trees, 7 peach trees just to name a few. I was making a purchase of close to $1,000 at Armstrong Nursery (Costa Mesa) when Jared interjected himself into the process. As noted, I am both experienced and successful in growing fruit bearing trees and shrubs on my property ; Jared proceeds to tell me that everything I am doing is wrong! It got to the point where this ingrate is berating ME, the customer for my sustainable horticulture practices. I could not get in a word, I just wanted to complete my purchase and leave; NEVER to RETURN!!! Armstrong Nursery you have lost a longtime customer with many gardening colleagues due to JARED! We bought our Christmas tree from the Armstrong Garden Center again this year. We brought the tree home a week before Thanksgiving and it is still going strong. Still drinking water and very little needle drop. Their trees are delivered in refrigerated trucks and stood up in water basins after a fresh cut. No need to cut again except... the nailed-on stands sometimes leak. We took a Sawzall to the last couple of inches and cut the stand off, nails and all. We suggest that you use your own stand. Despite this minor inconvenience, we wouldn't buy our trees anywhere else. I recommend that you buy your tree before Thanksgiving and stand it up in water in shade in your back yard or patio, until you are ready to bring it in and decorate. I have had more success in finding a variety of Japanese Maple trees at this particular Armstrong location compared to others. Occasionally, they will have some Japanese Maple trees marked down, but it is rare. The prices here are not cheap, but since they carry quite a few 5-6 gallon sizes, you can find them under $300 depending on the variety. I came in on 5/11/2024 looking for the Autumn Moon Full Moon Japanese Maple. I was lucky to find one and even though it was $250 for a 6 gallon, I still bought it. They had a ton of Sango Kaku and Bloodgood Japanese Maples, but those are readily available at Home Depot for cheaper so I don't recommend buying those here. They also had another Full Moon Japanese Maple variety, but I had to let that one go since it was getting really pricey with just the one Autumn Moon. I also decided to pickup two more Japanese Maples that caught my eye - Ukigumo (Floating Cloud) and Mikazuki (Crescent Moon) at $180 each. If you're ever in the market for Japanese maples that are more rare than what you'd typically find at a giant box store, come visit this location! read more

Can't believe I didn't come here sooner. The store itself is well laid out, clean, and organized. Also love the selection of pots here compared to other places. They have a variety of designs and colors, although it is more geared towards larger pot sizes which I noticed is typically common of many nurseries. They do have more smaller size pots compared to others. They carry flowers, individual succulents and arrangements, herbs and vegetable plants, trees, house plants, furniture, pots, gardening tools and supplies, trees, organic seeds, and etc. They even have sign stating they would find a rare plant for you should you need too! Haven't tried that service so I can not say how well it works but worth a shot. The offerings for organic vegetable and flower seeds are considerably broad. Also personally the layout for the seed rack is much easier to browse. They have all the packets laid against a wall rather than on the racks similar to a greeting card rack. And it seemed everything was in stock! I had a hard time finding lavender and was able to find it here in 2 varieties. This review Is for the outstanding customer service that Jonathan provided me over the weekend. I have always gone to Armstrong's Garden's when I want to purchase high-quality plants or flowers but I'm willing to pay a tiny bit more, or when I truly need need an expert's advice. This time my dog had eaten some berries from a tree in our backyard and was sick, and I didn't know if I needed to take her to the vet or not. She had mild symptoms like not eating and threw up one time, but I could tell she definitely wasn't feeling herself. I went to Home Depot and no one could identify the leaves or berries from the tree limb I brought, and then I went to Armstrong's Garden's and asked several people there including Jonathan. Jonathan went above and beyond and took a picture of the tree branch, blasted it out to all of his colleagues and within two hours was able to call me back with the name of the tree and let me know that per Google search it was not toxic to dogs but could cause G.I. upset. I can't tell you how thankful I was for his amazing follow up and his willingness to go out of his way to help a customer. I went in today to grab some soil and a pot for a Tiger Lily and was helped by the women working that gave me very good advice on another plant I struggle with keeping alive. This place is a bit overpriced if you know someone who gets plants wholesale but the staff can help you out which is nice and they have a lot of options all in one place. I like the convenience of their parking here and they have large wheel carts where you can put your plants on a flat service to safely bring them to your car. Though I love Rogers Gardens too, this place is where I go for spring potting, new plant vases, dirt, etc. I feel like I get specialty items at Rogers but here I get my planting supplies most of the time. It has great parking and easy access. You can get help and they label everything for you. Many staff ask me when I'm there if they can help. Wow. I bought a fountain there in May and I needed it delivered to Norco. Found out it was going to cost me more to move it and have it set up than the fountain cost. So yesterday I went in and ask if I could get the money refunded or put on a gift card. They happily did that - no questions asked.
