Initially, we didn't realize that there is a shaded area in the heart of the play structure with lots of benches for adults to hang out while the kids explore all of the many nooks and crannies of the "castle". There are enough different kinds of apparatus for climbing, sliding, swinging, and challenging oneself to keep kids of most ages entertained for quite a while. SG is almost 7 and it was perfect for her. She had to wait to be able to get onto a tire swing, so she kept an eye out for when that became available. She is determined to conquer the monkey bars, and that's a work in progress. Some parents of shorter stature with young kids were brave enough to crawl in and around part of the structure with their little ones. The central play area is built of sturdy wood in the shapes of a fanciful castle. While the wood adds a timeless appearance, it is also densely constructed, so it can be hard to visually keep track of your child as they move from place to place in the large area. I am having some mobility issues, so following SG around and standing on uneven ground (wood chips and padded mats) doesn't work for me. Even the wooden benches started to get to me after a while. If we were to come here again, given how much play time SG wanted to have, I would bring a portable seat cushion to keep my behind from falling asleep! Overall, this was a big win. Lots of intriguing play challenges, shade from the unrelenting August sun, free parking and free public park site. There's a bathroom building adjacent, but we didn't need to use it. Several street vendors were also available selling fruits, beverages, popsicles, etc.

The park is beautifully maintained - clean, with nice short grass, decent bathrooms, and good resting and picnicking spots. It's so convenient for a pleasant walk to and from the Camino Real Marketplace - no need to go along busy streets. This is a great park for dogs - lots of space to walk on-leash, hang out on a blanket, or play off-leash fetch. My pup and I also appreciate that they provide dog bags and have plenty of trash cans along the walkway. The park seems very safe. For a year I came here at night with one or two other women, to work out on the basketball court, and we never ran into any trouble. There are also some fun events here - local craft fairs from time to time, and of course the Lemon Fest. Enjoy!

Lots of well-maintained grass and a small pool for kids. Basketball courts too. There's even a short bike path for bikers traveling on Quarantina through the park where cars cannot travel. It really is a great community park. There's a small club house that you can rent from the city for parties and events. I've seen lots of birthday parties and quinces there. There have been problems with homeless people who choose not to be friendly towards the neighborhood. Removing the picnic tables seems to have helped. I hope they put in a small dog park where the picnic tables used to be. Lots of parking on Quarantina St in front of the SB junior high field. The road was recently redone and it looks great and inviting. There's even a nice plaque explaining the history of the trees along that street.

Ortega Park needs some TLC from the city. There are three basketball hoops here (one full court and…read moreone half) and only one is in working condition. The full court has one good side and one where the rim is basically bent beyond function. The half court is fine it just doesn't have a net, however a chain remnant hangs for dear life. The rims on all hoops are bouncy so you better work on your shot if you want anything to go in. The park itself is alright. Lots of people run around and play soccer. I think the park is decent for kids but not for hooping. Fix it Santa Barbara.
