Spring!
Kristy O.

Great spot to walk/run in Goleta. I like seeing all the dog walkers (leash required). Lots of ducks in the lake at spring time and you see the occasional cotton tail rabbit or crane. It's a small lake so I usually do a couple loops around, each loop only takes about 20 min at a leisurely pace. There are several little side paths that weave into the trees and benches on both sides of the lake to sit and relax to enjoy the view.

I kept hearing that there were some good places to jog/ walk around the Goleta area, and this is a hidden treasure. Since I live close by, I walked there, but I have read online that you can park in a lot close to the fire station of Los Carneros Rd. It's a beautiful place where people take their families and dogs to go on walks and ride their bikes. I have also read that they allow fishing if you have a license. Some of the path is paved, and some of it is dirt, but the trails are well maintained. I'll definitely be making use of this park.

Wooden bridge over the marsh

Lake Los Carneros Park is a great hidden spot that you wouldn't even know was in Goleta. The park actually contains several children's attractions (the Stow House and Railroad Museum), but once you park you'll find access to several dirt trails. There is also a gorgeous old house with a beautiful lawn I saw people picnicking on. The whole thing is a large loop around the lake--there are dirt trails through wooded or brush areas, a wooden deck over the marshland and a blacktop portion of trail with great views of the lake and mountains. I would say the whole length of trail around the lake is about a mile, but there are several offshoots leading into more grasslands. Tips: There are several doggie bag dispensers and benches. Signs say dogs must be on a leash, but I saw a few dogs off-leash. There are bathrooms behind the museum shop (I saw the sign but didn't try them out). There are lots of ducks, swans, birds and other critters. Directions: Take the Los Carneros exit off Hwy. 101 and head toward the mountains. Go straight through the roundabout and make the first right at the fire station. Parking is free.

Dead flowers and zig-zag bridge

Most of the property is scrub, but has one very interesting feature - a zig-zag bridge across the lake's marsh flowers (see pic). Unfortunately, the flowers weren't in bloom when I was there. The lake looks like a waterway that feeds mountain run-off to the ocean, but it's land-locked and there are trails that surround the entire lake. I entered the bridge by walking behind the Stow House (see separate Yelp listing) and found this sign (see pic) which leads to the bridge.

Parking at the railroad station is easy and close to historical sites

I had 10 wonderful days of camping here with great neighbors who respected quiet hours…read more Unfortunately, a new couple moved in and their dog barked nonstop all night -- from 11 PM until 5 AM. Quiet hours are clearly stated as 10 PM to 7 AM ,and we all signed a contract agreeing to that. I contacted the park office, only to later be told I should have called the sheriff instead. The ranger did absolutely nothing during the night. This morning the ranger spoke to my neighbor and then came to tell me that I could move -- even though I followed all the rules. The noisy neighbors were allowed to stay. If I wanted peace and quiet, apparently I was the one expected to relocate. When I asked the neighbor why he couldn't control his dog, he said, "What do you want me to do, tape its mouth shut?" That says everything about the kind of pet owner he is. It's unbelievable to punish someone who's been here peacefully for 10 days while allowing a dog to bark all night and disturb the entire campground. If you stay here, bring earplugs -- because management won't help. I'm giving two stars only because I enjoyed my stay before the neighbors from hell showed up.

I am definitely not a camper so this camping stuff is still new to me but I am HOOKED!!…read more I went camping with my family and close friends and we all had a BLAST!! The memories we created will be with me forever. This campground is well maintained, offers so much to do and see, is very affordable ($50.00 per night) and the Park Rangers are here around the clock providing security. The campground offers boat rentals, fishing, camping, movie nights, campfires, amazing views of the lake etc.. I could go on and on. This is a PERFECT place to come camping with your family, friends, both or solo. Solvang is 15-20 mins away and the Chumash Casino is three miles away for those that wish to step away from the camping thing for a short time. Very happy with our visit to this campground

I found Mono Campgrounds on GORP and it was listed as a top ten campground for Southern California…read more I was stoked to hear that there was swimming, hot springs, and many more great things to do. However, this campground is not all it is promised to be. First, the hot springs are pretty cool. However, they really are HOT. I mean too hot to go into when I was there. Hotter than a jacuzzi for sure. And they are literally piped into a little pool type concrete thing. Still nice though, but don't expect a natural swimming hole. Second, the area is very beautiful. You are not that far from Santa Barbra, but once you are over the first mountain range, you are into the middle of no where and it is beautiful. However, be prepared that you will have to drive 15+ miles over rough road. I saw some BMWs out at the campground, but man, I do not know how or why these people would take their cars out there. It is rough for a standard SUV and most people out there bring old beat up four wheelers. There are multiple water crossings and steep roads. We went in July (2010) and it was hot, about 95 when it was only 70 by the ocean. But this wasn't a surprise. But the millions of flys were. They were everywhere and unbearable. We left a night early because they were so bad. As for the swimming hole, we didn't find it. We did find an old dam, that was nothing special. I think there is a larger lake downstream a little bit, but it was so dry in July that I would doubt if there is any appreciable water that isn't stagnant and gross. Overall, this is a beautiful campground and the hot springs are something to see. But you really have to plan on taking forever to get there over the roads and be ready to battle the flies, heat, and lack of water. There is also no water at the sites themselves, so be sure to bring in your own water. There are vault toilets. Also do not forget your adventure passes!

I agree with the previous reviews. Our party also got feasted on by flies and ticks. The so called…read more"Hot Spring" is an ugly cement basin. The drive out there is very beautiful but easily 15 miles of rough road not suitable for my poor little sedan. If you're looking for a Santa Barbara Hot Spring check out the Gaviota hot spring. Right off the road, easy to find, good times to be had by all at good ol Gaviota.

We would make about 6-7 trips each season where we rented a nice 4 passenger 6hp(?) v-hull boat for around $125. The rental process was quick, and the office and marina staff were friendly and efficient. They also posted regular fishing reports. Then it all changed. I believe a new vendor took over the boat rental operations and everything went downhill. The boat rental process became very long and tedious, and you had to watch a 15 minute "safety " video each time you rented a boat. The staff also turned over and gone were all the friendly and efficient people. At times there was only one person running the whole show. They had to handle all the paperwork/video process and then walk you down to the boat and get that started. It literally took about 30-40 minutes per boat. Also, all the v-hull boats were no longer available and the least expensive rental option was around $250. I really miss the great crappie fishing and the beautiful surroundings. I hope that one day the marina will be back to what it was.
