ATTENTION CAREGIVERS AND THOSE IN RECOVERY -- AVOID THIS PLACE…read more I am a 53 year old marketing executive who has a son who is a recovering addict, bipolar and has a severe stomach condition call CVS. Every few months my son is unable to keep down his bipolar meds and gets really sick. Right after he entered Donnas House (and provided them with a list of the 14 mediations he's on) he had such an attack. Versus working with him to help him get through it their recourse was to kick him out. Just to clarify, he did not relapse or use non-prescribed drugs....he was just very sick and in fact had to be hospitalized. They didn't know how to handle my son's medical illness and chose instead to evict him. The owner Amy Christle offered to refund my money but never followed through on her promise. I have since consulted an attorney who advised me that my son could have taken legal action as he has been medically and legally classified as disabled and is protected from this kind of treatment. Donnas House is an unlicensed facility with poor controls. For example, they let people in early recover (20 days) be house managers. Here are the issues as I see them. The owners are involved in taking your money and that's it. After that they leave the operation to newly sober kids. The house is extremely overcrowded and probably violates zoning laws and is unclean. Finally, as caregivers we entrust our loved ones to these people and you hope they are good, fair Christians. Amy and Ryan (her husband) are not. They hide behind the name of some poor woman named Donna and take advantage of people and caregivers in tough situations.

I would never recommend donnas house to ANYONE looking for a sober living. This place is so…read moreunprofessional and unfairly run. I relapsed and was asked to leave for three days, which was completely understandable. But I was told once I returned in three days I was going to have to pay $1200 up front for next months rent, even though I still had a week left of that months rent. Which I had paid weekly and only $1000 altogether. So I had no choice but to leave and find somewhere else to live. Then I found out the owner was calling other clients parents to let them know I relapsed, which i find completely unprofessional. My mother also got a call about a client relapsing. I don't see why that's necessary to be telling private information to other families. On top of that, I was asked to remove all my belongings within 24 hours or they would be thrown away or donated. Even though they knew i had nowhere to take my stuff. And yet another client, who had relapsed a few days before me and still hasn't returned a week later was allowed to leave his belongings for weeks. Why? Simply because he could afford to pay the $1200 up front. Donnas house isn't about recovery, it's about money.

I am saddened to write this review but it needs to be said:…read moreAfter Alter Behavioral Health agreed to readmit my transgender daughter, Brady, I was relieved because I truly believed she was returning to the best place for her care. Erica and Jack from No Matter What Recovery have supported our family for years and never gave up on Brady. Because Brady's mental health diagnosis is so complex, many residential programs have declined to accept her. Erica continued advocating, making calls, and pushing until Brady was finally given another opportunity to return to Alter. Not many residential programs are equipped to care for someone with Brady's high acuity, and Alter's clinical team had previously provided outstanding treatment two years ago. Brady remained at UCLA Resnick Psychiatric Hospital for more than 20 days while we waited for an in-network bed to become available at Alter. Once she was admitted, however, my experience with Alter's admissions and billing department changed dramatically. For approximately 10 days, I received repeated calls and messages from Jackie in billing and Morgan in admissions regarding an alleged Cigna insurance balance from nearly two years earlier . I explained multiple times that I was experiencing a severe Crohn's disease flare-up, and my only priority was making sure Brady received the treatment she desperately needed. Despite this, I felt pressured to sign numerous financial documents and make payments before a clear explanation of what I supposedly owed. At one point, they could not even tell me the exact amount of the alleged balance. Feeling desperate to avoid anything interfering with Brady's treatment, After taking time to think clearly, I informed Alter that I wanted my attorney to review the documents before agreeing to anything further and requested invoices supporting the alleged balance. Almost immediately after, Brady was discharged from residential treatment approximately two weeks earlier than expected. From my perspective, the timing was impossible to ignore. Brady still needed residential care.. After Brady's discharge, I contacted UnitedHealthcare myself because I wanted to understand whether Alter had exhausted the authorization process. Based on what I was told, I came away believing that additional efforts to request continued days had not been made and I was lied to! That confirmed my concern that Brady's discharge was not simply the result of an unavoidable insurance denial. I had even shared these concerns with Erica, one of Brady's clinicians, who had been kind, compassionate, and had genuinely believed Alter would not discharge a client prematurely. She's amazing btw! What makes this even more difficult is that, after Brady had been transferred elsewhere, beds were available at Alter despite our family having waited more than 20 days at UCLA Resnick for an in-network opening!!! One of the most painful parts of this experience was the stark difference in how our family was treated over the years. When Brady was previously covered under a comprehensive Cigna plan, Alter actively pursued having Brady in treatment and made us feel like valued clients. This time, under UnitedHealthcare, our experience felt completely different. We went from feeling welcomed and supported to feeling pressured over an old insurance claim while our child was in psychiatric treatment. Whether intentional or not, the contrast in how we were treated before and after the insurance change was impossible for me to ignore. Even after Brady left the program, the billing calls texts and email. I want to make one thing very clear: the clinical staff were exceptional!!!! The therapists, nurses, behavioral health technicians, psychiatrists, and frontline staff treated Brady with compassion, dignity, professionalism, and genuine care. I am especially grateful to Erica on Brady's clinical team, Val the nurse, and Natalie the therapist consistently treated our family with kindness, empathy, and unwavering support. Throughout Brady's stay, they genuinely believed Alter would continue fighting for Brady's treatment because that is what they believed was in Brady's best interest. My concerns are not with the clinicians who cared for my daughter every day, but with the administrative and financial decisions that ultimately determined whether she could remain in treatment. My concerns are directed entirely at Alter's admissions, utilization review, and billing practices. Families with loved ones in psychiatric crisis should never feel pressured into signing financial documents or making payments, understanding what they allegedly owe, and having the opportunity to seek legal advice. They should also have confidence that every reasonable effort will be made to advocate for continued treatment when medically necessary!!! We trusted Alter during one of the most vulnerable times in our lives. Our family deserved better, and I sincerely hope no other family experiences what we did!!

He called every day to help me get into Covanent Hill's residential treatment. Thank you to Britt for doing my intake and making the process less scary. I was in residential treatment for 90 days where I met the most amazing women who helped me change my whole perspective on life and myself. I came in suicidal and with an excessive of self hatred. No one as ever taken an interest in helping me and their constant love and support has changed my life. I have forever been changed through my considerate case manager Shelby, my compassionate therapist Heather and all the staff Dena, Maddie, Blue, Jen, Jenny, Anne Marie, Whittney, grief group Cathy, Pastora Nicole, Tammy and Jillian. It cannot be put into words how these women have saved me and changed my life. I am forever grateful! Also Riley is cool and Darren is the best! Thank you Covanent Hills.

I felt no judgment on my DOC or past when I arrived. They simply talored their time and focus on how they could help pull me out of my depression and put me back on track with my sobriety. What I loved about the program is that they have on-site therapists AND case-managers that allowed for both mental and emotional help. They assisted with methods for long-term sobriety while also building emotional character. Another aspect of the program is that they offer two separate recovery tracks : Christian and traditional. However, it never felt "seperated". In fact, the group sessions that were frequently held, allowed me to form bonds with the other women that I will always hold onto. We engaged in art therapy, horse therapy, goat yoga, kayaking, paddleboarding and more! There were PLENTY of activities that allowed me to learn to enjoy sobriety in the outside world. I want to thank all the staff members who helped pull me out of a very dark place and also helped with aftercare such as sponsors and IOP treatment. CH will always be the treatment facility that I recommend to anyone who is seeking sobriety and overall mental health. Denna, Heather, Claudia, Jenny, Jen, Diana, Kaitlyn, Taylor, Lori, Andrea, Nicole, and Jennifer, I truly adore each and everyone of you ladies because you have made an astronomical impact in my world.

I was in a difficult and dark place at the time, and I was skeptical of everything. Dr. Hoffman and I established a rapport immediately, and over the months and years I came to consider him one of my closest acquaintances. If you're a reader and a writer, you'll find a kindred soul in Hoffman, who has written and published multiple fiction and nonfiction works. Whether you dig trashy genre fiction or pretentious experimental literary nonsense like me, or more respectable stuff, you'll find a caring and compassionate storyteller and listener who understands the way we word-people think and feel. I mention writing because some of my most helpful sessions were during the months when we collaborated on a writing project as an exercise in narrative therapy that also helped to reignite my creative passions. We fell out of touch for a little while due to my various obligations and whatnots, but now as my life is again transforming around me and I'm throwing myself into my literary work with a renewed dedication and focus, I'm looking forward to meeting with him again to help me on this new project and adventure of life. (In fact, that's how I landed on Yelp today looking for him...he may end up reading this before I call to make an appointment.) He was also instrumental in helping me through various legal, medical, employment and recovery related challenges. He's also just a great guy to talk to, with vast knowledge, colorful personal stories, a friendly attitude and a compassionate heart. If you're interested in mindfulness, meditation of any stripe, or exploring consciousness in general, a visit with Dr. Hoffman may be some of the best time you can spend investing in yourself and your loved ones (because they benefit too!) If you are a writer, artist, musician or any kind of creatively inclined person, I cannot recommend him highly enough. Dog people? Last time I checked he had an adorable Ridgeback. I'm a cat man myself, with three at home, but I always looked forward to a weekly lick from his big puppy. That's the kind of extra touch that makes a real difference. Seriously though, animal lovers will feel right at home on Dr. Hoffman's couch. I've tried every major AI chat bot, and after extensive research, decided that giving Dr Hoffman a call is the best move I can make for my mental health. I prefer books and computer screens to most people, but even I gotta admit that there's no substitute for a real understanding human who gets where you're coming from. ChatGPT ain't got nothing on the man. In fact, I'm posting this review as a way to force myself to quit putting it off another day and just make an appointment already. If you're reading this, you may do well to try the same.
