I have used them for 15 years. The last five rides were aggressive, dangerous, I was overcharged for paying with a credit card, they took different routes than I asked... Finished. So dangerous was the last ride that I didn't tip, and the driver lingered for 15 in front of my house. I almost called the police. read more

Best car service in Brooklyn. They have all kinds of car seats for kids and babies, are always on time and have really good pricing to and from airport rides. Highly recommend this car service! read more

I TAKE IT BACK. I don't know what it is with me and bad luck with cabs as I'm leaving hospitals but, Arecibo is the second offender. [ See also: http://www.yelp.com/biz/taxi-and-limousine-commission-consumer-relations-new-york#hrid:3w3HvQqznWyKq2yXqv5_mw .] Considering that I've only been to hospitals 4 or 5 times in NYC, that's a pretty dismal percentage. It was windy, rainy & cold outside. I summoned the last bit of power in my phone's battery to call Arrecibo. "I'm at 97 Amity. Near Henry." "Miss, tell me where you are." "I'm at Amity & Henry. We're on the corner." "Where are you?" "Amity and Henry. We are on the corner." "Miss, figure out where you are and call back." [Hangs up.] I call back, no answer. Battery dies. Soooooo... thanks a lot, Arecibo. read more

I've been using Arecibo since 2008. They were the first car service that I saved into my phone. I would recommend them to anyone and everyone. They were always there in 5 minutes, super cheap and polite. In 2008, this would have been a 5 star review. Over time, I started noticing things. They would take longer to pick up the phone, or you would be placed on hold for longer. They would quote you 5 minutes and actually show up in 20. The exact same trip might be $9 one day and $12 the next day. Okay, okay. You're getting busier, I get it. However, I have had TWO absolutely horrible experiences with them lately that kind of put me over the edge. I won't go into the gory details, but on the most recent experience I will say the dispatch guy: A. wouldn't listen to me when I was trying to explain how to locate my address B. accused me of being "incooperative" because I wouldn't carry 3 large and heavy containers to meet a car at an intersection over a block away from the address I had requested the car for C. actually called me a liar for saying that they hadn't called me when he insisted they had (YOU WANNA SEE MY PHONE RECORDS?!?) D. refused to let me speak to a manager or provide me with any contact info for filing a complaint E. refused to compensate me in any way for wasting almost an hour of my time, not to mention the pathetic excuse for customer service Yeah Arecibo. I think we're officially through. read more

I've had two very good experiences with Arecibo. The dispatcher was easy to reach and accurate with arrival times. Both drivers were also polite, drove safely, and had no problem with heavy luggage. read more

I had a horrific experience with this company. First off, I didn't actually arrange for a car pick-up, rather, I came across these people via one of those green cabs that are popping up around the city. According to NYC.gov, the "vehicle[s] [are] associated with a local car service that has been affiliated with the Boro Taxi program and can still participate in pre-arranged trips" - and then I found this company on my bank statement, so it is definitely them. Aside from overcharging me ($46 from Wall Street area to Upper East Side - this route usually take around mid-$20s to low-$30s tops), the driver was an absolute creep. He continuously leered at me in the rearview mirror and made nasty, lewd comments like, "are you going to get f*cked when you go home." I was traveling home alone late at night, and we took the FDR so I didn't feel like I could get out of the cab or really tell him to knock it off, because I was scared he would do something. When we finally got to my destination, he asked if he could kiss my neck. On the way home I had texted my fiance to come meet me, so fortunately I was able to hop out of the car and rush inside, but the whole experience was terrifying. I can't speak to their reservation car service, and I'm not sure how these companies contract out to green cabs, yellow ones, or otherwise, but they definitely have some really shady people driving under their name. read more

Arecibo is pretty inconsistent, sometimes you get a dinky old towncar, and sometimes you get to be fly in a Navi, what can I say, I dream about being J.Lo, circa Sean Combs. Can I live? But seriously, the drivers are nice, they don't speak much English, but you can get over that. read more

These guys are a joke the last time I used thier service, they took me from Manhattan to JFK and when w got to JFK, the driver told me he couldnt take credit cards? seriously? , what if i didn't have $70 in cash on me? I travel for my company and we always use corp cards. The second time I called, the operator was insanely rude! he asked me what streets I was between. I said " I'm at the corner of XX and XXX in betw..........." and he interrupted me saying, I didnt ask you that! I asked you what street you were in between!" I said " You didnt let me finish!" and I hung up on him! read more

Oh Arecibo... I lived in BK for a couple of years and there were many times I took a car into the city, or to the airport, and Arecibo was always my first call; though I don't know why... I guess I just didn't know of another company that was better. I loved them, and then hated them, and then loved them, and then hated them so many times over the years. The worst was when they'd say "ok... 5 minutes" and then hang up the phone on you without confirming where they would pick you up. Then, they would not show for 20 minutes, you'd call back, and nobody would answer the phone. I broke so many vows to never to use them again over the years. After a couple of missed flights, a couple of late mornings to work, a couple of missed appointments, I finally decided that it wasn't worth it and got to know the yellow cab routes. I moved to the city some time ago, but still, I'm haunted by the memory of these guys... they really did try, their drivers really were incredibly nice, but their dispatcher was the worst of the worst. Oh Arecibo... you could do so much better! read more

Worst car service I have ever dealt with!!! The day of my wedding we had scheduled a number of cars to pick up the wedding party, as well as my soon-to-be-wife and her mother. I made the reservations a couple days in advance, and was very specific on the phone that this was for a wedding and being late was not an option. I live in a high-rise, and left phone numbers for the drivers to call to inform us when they had arrived. The first round of cars that was supposed to pick up me and all the wedding guests was 20 minutes late. On top of that, I ordered one car for 4 people, and a second mini-van for 6. What I got was one car and one compact SUV (it was a Toyota Rav 4 or something) that we then had to cram 6 people into. We finally got into the cars, and were on our way. My wife and mother-in-law were supposed to be leaving 15 minutes after us, and they still hadn't heard from their driver (keep in mind the first group was already 20 minutes late, so now the second car for my wife is about 25 minutes late). I called and kept getting put on hold. When I finally spoke to someone he said the driver had arrived, waited 5 minutes and left. I asked if he had called the number I supplied, and all I got from the dispatcher was puzzled silence. Obviously I was quite angry at this point because my wife was standing on the corner of a street in Brooklyn in a wedding dress waiting for a ride that wasn't coming, so I asked (as calmly as possible) that they get a car back to the corner immediately. I was told it would take 5 minutes, so I said fine and asked if I could pay for all the cars on my credit card. After arguing with the dispatcher about the price (he tried to charge me for a mini-van when that clearly was not what we got), I paid and got out of the car at the site of the wedding. 15 minutes later I received a call from my mother in law saying there still wasn't a car. I called Arecibo back again, this time livid, and asked where the car was and the dispatcher said "I told you it was going to be 20 minutes..." At that I hung up, nearly throwing my phone across the street. I got a call a minute later saying my wife had found a car to take them, and that they were on their way, nearly 45 minutes past the time they were supposed to get picked up. In short, if you have to be somewhere on time or would like to travel in any modicum of comfort I would suggest passing on Arecibo. Filthy cars, poor management, and absolutely no respect for scheduling...you can do 100 times better for the same price with any number of other services. I learned my lesson...and I hope it will save you from having to learn about Arecibo the way I did. read more

Arecibo has been around for a long time which led me to call them about a trip from Park Slope to Roslyn. They gave a much better price than several competitors I called, so I went with them. Given the length of my stay in Roslyn, I had a different driver in each direction. Both arrived a few minutes early to pick me up, were totally courteous, drove well and got me the my destination in less than my expected time. I was alone, but they had roomy comfortable cars--a large SUV and a minivan. I couldn't ask for more and will definitely call Arecibo first for me next trip. read more

Fuck you, and your shitty service, and every single miscommunication I've ever had with y'all. I ask for a sedan, they send a minivan. I tell them 5:30, the driver comes at 5AM and is pissed he's been waiting so long. I told them I have a bike - and a car of my own; I take my bike in it just fine. I said *specifically* what my needs were and was quoted an amount. When I told this to the driver, he drove away. I told Arecibo if I was quoted the proper rate - cool! - I could have told my boss the rate and she could have put that in the budget. They told me I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN it would be more. No, my friend, I only know what you tell me based on the information I provided. ALSO, they hung up on me twice. FUCK YOU, ARECIBO. I called Uber, they showed up with a Camry, the seats fold flat, I put my bike in the trunk, and all is well. THANKS FOR MAKING ME LATE TO WORK. PS: AND Uber was $10 cheaper than Arecibo's quote, pre-tip for Arecibo's driver. I reiterate my fuck you. read more

Way less reliable than in the past--very late, or no-show. Even on a Saturday morning. They've been my regular for years, so I continued to call them--thought they'd improve. This review comes after 7 bad experiences Dispatcher repeatedly says they'll arrive in 5 minutes--I call back ten minutes later, he says 5 minutes--I call back 7 minutes later--he says one minute--call again--one minute--again--one minute. Then they simply didn't answer the phone. I've used them to go to the airport, so maybe their unreliability is confined to the morning. The drivers are usually kind, and competent. Cars are very clean. But: I'm giving them one star, because of the panic that I'm gonna miss the flight! Getting around in boroughs outside of Manhattan... I call Arecibo. (or book online). They arrive in 5 minutes. They take me to my destination. They usually do not complain. I pay them. This works well for me. Rarely do I have an issue with this company (a few times I had to call to remind them to come get me), rarely do they cuss at me in different languages (hats off to Yellow Cab drivers!), I always have made it in one piece, and the cars are in good working order. *They do take credit cards (over the phone), but cash is easier. *online booking is a little tricky, they will email you a confirmation. (just wait!) *IF you live in Park Slope, no need to reserve in advance...just call 5 minutes before you wish to leave. *done and done. Price experience... $28 to LGA. $38 to JFK $25 to Manhattan. $10 within South Brooklyn. $35 to Queens. Screw Yellow Cab. Seriously. read more

DO NOT USE THIS CAR SERVICE. I relied on them to provide me with a medical transportation service to get me to my doctor appointments and they routinely showed up 30-45 minutes late! I had to call them numerous times just to find out where my ride was. Each time I called they had a different answer for me as to which car would show up. Consequently I have missed or been late to important appointments. Arecibo does not operate in a professional or responsible manner. Today they were 35 minutes late and when I complained to a supervisor he didn't even seem to think it was a big deal-he didn't even offer a simple apology. Save yourself some time and frustration and find somewhere else to do business or just get an Uber. And definitely do not use them for medical transportation. read more

Clean cars are the only thing this service has going for it, unless you like top 40 music blasting through the speakers. Our most recent driver was a jerk who is the last nail in the coffin for this over-priced shit show. After almost getting into a few car accidents, running some pedestrians off the road, and then charging us DOUBLE what we pay with other services, I will not be calling this place ever again. When calling, they don't give you a chance to ask for an estimate so they can overcharge when it's too late to dispute. read more

If I could give this zero stars, I would. I called to discuss a concern I had on my trip. the person I spoke to didn't want to hear what I had to say. My driver was driving with one hand the entire way of the 1 hour trip. she was swerving into other lanes. On my way back home, this drivers car was as old as I am! the air conditioning was not adequate and temperature outside was 100 degrees. Another one hand driver! These drivers are independent contractors! DO NOT USE ARECIBO. read more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! I am new to NYC so getting used to using car service. When I need to travel to aiports for work I would use Carmel, as they are a little pricier and my job pays for them. This weekend my family came to visit and I needed a car service to pick them up at the airport and bring them to my apartment. Arecibo seemed to have good rates. They were very speedy about picking them up; however, the driver tried to make my father pay him when I had already prepaid them over the phone!!! When it was time for my family to leave. I made an apt for the car to come pick them up.and the driver was 30 mins late. When he arrived he said to us that he couldn't take them to the airport because I needed to order a mini van as my 4 family members each had a suitcase. The crazy thing about that comment was that when I called and made the appointment I said, "I have four people, who each have a suitcase". So I didn't understand how now it was an issue!! Luckily there was a Gypsy cab driver who was outside watching the whole ordeal and because he saw that they were being ridiculous, he gave my family a ride to the airport for only $30, this was $15 less than Arecibo!! I WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN!!! read more

Let's pretend for a second that you're able to get past the obnoxious hold music to the part where the dispatcher says "5 minutes"... you'd better pray your timeline is flexible because 1 out of every 5 times they take wayyyyyy longer. Ordered a car for 7 am to go to JFK. It's 7:15 and they're not there so I call, they classically tell me "2 minutes", and finally a car shows up down the street with the wrong address. He doesn't want to help me with my luggage and he plays death metal the whole way there. Then I leave my phone in the back seat as I rush into the airport only to MISS MY FLIGHT. Called Arecibo later and was passed around on hold for 30 minutes till they tell me they have no record of anyone even picking me up at all and no iPhone in their lost and found. I don't even want to give them one star. I love iphones because of their easy read of dial outs and calls that I make. Reason being: 5:47 call Arecibo, give address, rushed off phone. This call 22 seconds. I was told 5 minutes. 6:04 I call Arecibo back because the lack of car. They told me car will be there in 2 minutes. "He is in your neighborhood." I live less than eight blocks from the company. 6:16 no car still. I call back. This time the car will take 5 minutes. "Perhaps I should call another car," I said. "Go right ahead," said the dispatch. I ended up calling Eastern. Arecibo does have cheaper prices, by a dollar, but they are not worth. Arecibo can suck it. read more

I called Arecibo based on the reviews on Yelp and NY Magazine but was SO ANGRY and disappointed. I called ahead from Canada to make a reservation for them to pick me up at Newark with my two small dogs. The man assured me that they would be on time with my flight and my dogs would be welcome for an extra $5. Firstly, the car was forty-five minutes late. Secondly, the driver told me my dogs couldn't come in the car (ummm ,the trunk??) to which we had a bit of an argument. Then he complained the whole way to Brooklyn about Newark and rush hour - this was not my problem. He made me feel guilty for flying into Newark and said he should have refused to pick me up. read more

They may be cheap but they make up the difference in thefts! One of the drivers stole my wallet with all my identification and money. After paying for tip, I exited the car with my belongings and the driver went off. Sixty seconds later, I noticed the wallet was gone. After waiting ten minutes on hold with the dispatch, I convince them to have the driver come back to my home to search the back seat. He appears half an hour later with the best "I-don't-give-a-shit" approach to searching for the wallet. The owner of the car service and the dispatcher did not want to prove necessary information to file a lost property report and were overall very dodgy. Taxicab thefts are the best side business for some drivers - high ridership, long delays, no video cameras means no accountability. Since I'm not the only reviewer with issues of stolen property, make sure to watch your belongings while driving with Arecibo. read more

I have never had anything other than excellent experiences with Arecibo. They're prompt (I've never waited more than 10 minutes), always helpful with heavy bags or boxes, and cheap as hell. I've used them to get back and forth from Park Slope to Ikea ($10 each way), Target ($6), and Home Depot ($14 for a minivan big enough to hold my new grill!). Yes I reed the reviews, but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. I had to be to JFK by 8am so I reserved a pick up for 7:15am. I even got a confirmation email after I reserved it. Well 7:15 came and went, no one called or showed up. Eventhough I live in a very busy area, its right by the BQE and cabs are travelling too fast to stop to pick me up. I waited until 7:50 to call, and the girl had no idea what happened or offer to call the driver or anything. So I had no choice but to take the train, making me over an hour late to work. I even emailed them to see what happened, replying to the confirmation they emailed me, and no response. Never again. read more

Where to start? My wife and I made reservations for car service to JFK. These guys were supposed to show up at 7:30pm. 7:45 we call and they say someone is on the way. 8PM we call and get same thing. After that they would put us on hold immediatly and never return to speak with us. It was raining hard so other car services were extremely busy. We missed our flight. Had to pay a few hundred more to fet on another flight and these jerks never ever called us back or responded in any way/ Don't use these guys... ever! read more

These guys used to rock. Used to, being the operative phrase. Past month, they've gone from being good, to being just outright useless. I use, (or used to, I won't ever be calling them again.) them at least twice a week minimum, but the past 4 weeks, every single call to them, has to be repeated to find out of a car is even coming. Last night, was the straw that broke the camel's back. (I'd have been happy to have a camel last night.) Was told 10 minutes, called back 30 minutes later, "Oh yes! Car will be there in 5 minutes!". 20 minutes later I gave up and just took the subway. When they show up, they're great, but you can't trust a car service that doesn't show up reliably. I'll be taking my business elsewhere. read more

Definitely the most reliable car service I have used. They answer, take your location, take your destination, tell you 5 minutes. Don't try to have a conversation, just tell them where you want to be picked up and generally where you are going. They always arrive in less than five minutes. The cars are always clean, never smell like smoke and the drivers are always completely friendly and know exactly how to get where you are going. What I like most about the drivers at Arecibo is they never initiate a conversation, but if you talk to them, they will talk back. I prefer this than someone talking to me when I just want to get somewhere. read more

I'm becoming convinced that Arecibo's dispatcher is Darth Vader--though with a slightly different accent, and no heavy breathing. Why? He uses very terse language, isn't at all friendly, and doesn't mind if the TIE fighter you called up to bring you to the nearest planet shows up 25 minutes late. If Darth says his usual "five minutes," be aware that he might mean two or thirty or no ride at all. The TIE fighter pilots, by the way, are generally quite nice. Too bad Darth is managing them. read more

I almost got into a bad accident driving behind an Arecibo car. I had a safe distance between me and the driver, on a very congested 4th Avenuei Brooklyn, in the right hand lane to turn onto to 9th. The Arecibo car suddenly came to a halt at the corner of 9th Street--no signal, no warning, no apparent awareness that a thick flow of traffic including large trucks was right behind her. I slammed on the breaks and evasively swerved to the left, almost getting ploughed into from behind and from the middle lane (tires screeched). Apparently, she was going to pick up a fare there--this is a person who drives for a living, and can't judge that it's safer to turn the corner where there is no traffic behind her because of the light? It was a very scary situation, and infuriating. I've often seen Arecibo cars lumbering down residential side streets with a blatant disregard for safety, but this latest incident was too much to bear. Ride in their cars at peril to your safety: and everyone around you, too. read more

I called Arecibo the night before to schedule a ride to the airport. The next morning I waited for 10 minutes past my scheduled pickup time to call to see where the car was. The operator said (without even pausing to check) "Oh he's around the corner". I waited another 10 minutes and still no car. I had to walk around my neighborhood at 730am to find a taxi. 5 minutes later I start getting calls from Arecibo. They were a full half hour late and they're located less than half a mile from my place. INCOMPETENT. read more

Absolutely horrible service. EVERY TIME I have used them, they showed up late, charged me more than what was stated when I called or just haven't showed up at all. The final straw was when I was in a car with a VERY perverted driver. He kept bringing up my race (I'm black), asking me if I liked "white boys" and that "latino men could do things they couldn't." to me all night and all these things that were VERY inappropriate. I was incredibly uncomfortable. Never again. EDIT: 7/12/2010. I tried to give them one more shot when I needed a quick ride in the middle of a hot day, and had no other numbers on me. I get into the car, and the windows are all rolled up. The guy had on the a/c but it's one of those a/c's that make the car smell like fumes and was making me sick. I tried to open my window, it wouldn't open. He looks at me and says "it doesn't open.". I go "oh it's broken?", I get "why do you need to open it?" as an answer. I was completely taken aback. I explained to him that I was having trouble breathing and also got car sick easily in a closed in vehicle. He REFUSED to open a window. Seriously, this place can burn to the ground. If it was possible to give a negative rating to this service I would. I really don't like giving negative reviews, but In this case I feel I should. I was in the NY/Brooklyn area for about 3 days and a friend gave us their name as a reliable car service. Nothing could have been further from the truth. I must say its not the drivers but seems to be the office management / dispatch. We tried calling 15-20 minutes before needing to go somewhere - they were late or totally didn't come until we called wondering where they were. Then we tried reserving the night before - still they didn't come until we called complaining that we re going to be late to our event. Confirmer twice that we would have a rear facing infant car seat for the airport. Car seat arrived forward facing. It also appeared broken and was a cheap brand that I had never heard of. Driver had no idea how to install it rear facing and his van was not equipped with The necessary base or seatbelt straps. He tried to put my small baby in an extremely wobbly, barely fastened car seat. It got so late that we weee about to miss our flight. I had to drive through Manhattan with the baby in my lap. On the other end, his payment machine was broken. He attempted to take my credit card - I had to physically pull it away from him When we were leaving. While booking the car service, I asked if the driver could meet me inside at baggage claim. Arecibo agreed. But after getting lost and going to the wrong floor first, my driver finally met me in a huff at baggage claim questioning why I had asked for a driver (him) to meet me inside. No apologies. Just: "It's much easier to meet outside," he barked. I said if the trip was proving inconvenient for him, I could find alternate transportation. He said it was fine. He would drive me home. (This did not make me feel super comfortable). Meanwhile I was lugging a big bag and a carry on suitcase and he never offered to help me. Rather, he dragged his feet. At one point, he was a few yards behind me on his cell phone. Once we arrived at the garage I felt even more uncomfortable and uneasy and knowing we had a long car ride ahead, I told him - you know what... I would prefer NOT to accompany him in his car. He said, "I waited an hour for your flight to arrive and paid for parking!" The flight delay was not in my control but I did hand him $10 to cover his $6 parking cost...at which point he called me a Bitch. Fortunately I was with a friend and she was accompanied by her driver from an alternative car service company ....and they offered to take me home, instead. They were not about to let me get in the car with this man. Once getting in the car I called Arecibo, explained what happened and the man on the phone said, "But what's the problem? Didn't the man meet you in the airport and offer to take you home?" As if kindness and making customers feel comfortable is not part of the job description. I love Arecibo because they're totally cool with pets, or at least with cats in carriers. We called for a cab one night because our cat was sick, and as soon as I came out with the carrier, the driver said "Ah, you're going to the all-night pet hospital!" and took us straight there with no directions needed. Very impressed. They also gave me the world's quickest ride to JFK. Like, I blinked and we were there. I have no idea how the driver did it. Magic carpet? Interdimensional warp? Just got picked up at the airport by the most disgusting (white car covered in birdpoop, brown from dirt, looked like it had been in a wreck), smelly (cigarettes, old perfume, trash everywhere) car, with a complete ahole driver. I was so blown away at how nasty and unacceptable it was, so nasty that I had the window wide open and still had to cover my nose with my jacket. To make matters worse this driver had the nerve to scream at me the whole way about having to wait an hour (not true) while I picked up my baggage. Everytime I have called Arecibo I call when I'm walking to baggage claim, which is exactly what I did. When I complained about the state of this car and the rude driver they could care less, all they wanted was my credit card number. Believe me it was so bad I didn't want to pay, but the driver was standing out in the middle of the street staring me down as I took my bags into my house while waiting on the phone for someone to talk to me. I have used this car service loyally for the past three years and in the last six months their service has gone completely downhill. I'm urging everyone to try another car service, because this situation shows how inconsistent and unreliable they can be. No one wants to get off a 6 hour flight and pay to sit in someone's nasty personal car with trash and cigarettes everywhere (including backseat) read more

While I love the car service itself, today (right now @12:30pm 1/2/16) we have an incredibly rude driver. We told the car service we have a dog that would be in his travel bag. Now he's writing some notes about us on his tablet WHILE DRIVING! Are you kidding? I have a new best friend, and that is Julani at Arecibo. Had a 6am flight to the West coast for a cousin's wedding. He was prompt, and polite, but then tragedy struck. As we are pulling into the United terminal at LaGuardia (from Park Slope), I have a monuments "OH SHIT" moment, when I realize that I forgot my suit, that I would be wearing to the wedding THAT I WAS IN, in less than 48 hours! Julani drove with haste, but we never felt uncomfortable. When most drivers would just say "too bad", Julani took it as his personal mission to get me to the airport with my suit. Miraculously, we made back to my apartment, then all the way back to LaGuardia with less than 5 minutes to spare before the cut-off for checking baggage. Thank god for Arecibo! read more
