This was the only car service that I could reach last minute at 4 a.m. and it worked out perfectly. It was $40 from Park Slope to JFK (my ride in was $60 with another service). The driver arrived within 5 minutes of placing the call. Clean car, friendly driver, direct route, no BS. It is cash only but the onus is on the customer to work that one out ahead of time. I will absolutely make Arecibo my default car service next time I'm in town. read more

I have been an Arecibo customer for many, many years. They are the only car service I use at this point, and the only one I trust with my children without me, (ages 12 and 16). They are like a small town cab company with big city service and availability. They are punctual, professional.... I can not say enough about them. read more

We had a great experience with Arecibo. Took a car from Park Slope to Long Island with our 9 month old. Booking was easy and quote was much less than Jupiter. Driver arrived on time and was very courteous and helped us with luggage. Car was clean and comfortable, rear facing car seat was perfectly installed. Highly recommend! read more

DO NOT USE ARECIBO! I Will not be using Arecibo again! I gave them numerous chances to show otherwise, but drivers are always late, rude & rip you off. I transported 2 small folding bookshelves and the ride would normally be $12 the driver upcharged to $20 simply because I was using his trunk! Another occasion I was told I could use my credit card by dispatcher only to find out while trying to pay, that I in fact couldn't. Another time I had some luggage, the driver didn't help but stood there watching me and only complained that my luggage wouldn't fit. When I put it in myself, there was room to spare. This was my go-to car service when I lived in Fort Greene and I still rely on Arecibo for rides to JFK when I visit NY and stay with friends in Park Slope or Prospect Heights. I've never had a problem with their service, have pretty much always had really friendly drivers, etc. One time my sister was riding with Arecibo to JFK and the car got a flat tire--Arecibo sent another car to pick her up right away and she was hardly delayed. read more

Nothing outstanding about these guys except that they show up. What they have done to tick me off is to say they take credit cards, but then they give you the run around when trying to use one. Because I'm traveling for work, I don't want to choke up my own cash. And when traveling to the airport, it's likely that a person *might* be going for business. Always on time - so on time, that the second you say where you're going they're already saying "Be there in 10 minutes". Its usually less. Sometimes you do have to wait on hold for a minute, because the lines are swamped. But, the actual service is amazing, and the drivers are great. I called Arecibo because I'd purchased a desk from a thrift store in Brooklyn with no way to get it home. The last minute moving vans were unavailable. I told the dispatcher the situation. He promptly sent a minivan with enough room for the desk. The driver actually helped me get the desk into the car and then to my front door. For a very fair price. The best service I've ever had. I placed a reservation online and received a confirmation email that my reservation was received and the car would be there on time. It wasn't. I had to call (twice) and the second time I called I was told I shouldn't have booked online - using their website, and their reservation system - because it doesn't always work. The car ended up arriving about 25 minutes after my initial reservation request. The price is fine but Uber or other car services might be more reliable. read more

Thought I would try this car service instead of Uber. Made a reservation 6 hours prior to my pickup time. Received an email for my driver saying he "would be on time", which I'm glad he cleared up for me. Waited outside for 10 minutes past my pickup time. Didn't have a number for my driver so went ahead and ordered an Uber. It's now 30 minutes past my original pickup time and I've still not heard anything from my driver. This die-hard public transportation person avoids cabs and car services at all costs. Sometimes, however, there are times when fast and reliable transportation is necessary - - like to the disaster area we call LaGuardia. Several friends recommended Arecibo, and now, having used their services, so do I. Ordering the car service was easy on the phone. My driver was there on time (early, actually), and was courteous and professional. Arecibo takes credit cards, the credit card machine told me how much to tip based on percentage, so I didn't have to figure it out. Got to LaGuardia in plenty of time, and that was that. No angst! I arrived for a visit in Brooklyn on a Monday evening and used this car company Monday evening and Tuesday evening. The first time, the car showed up to my hotel immediately, with zero problems. The second time, I called ahead and although I arrived downstairs to meet the car at exactly the time I'd reserved, they ended up taking someone else without verifying the destination (I saw them driving off as I was walking out the door). Whatever. It happens. I called again and they sent another car. I called Wednesday morning for another pick-up and they informed me that no such address existed in Brooklyn, only in Manhattan . . . even after I explicitly told them I was staying on the edge of Park Slope and Gowanus. Um? I told the dispatcher they'd already picked me up at this address twice (the last time in less than 24 hours, in fact) and he still insisted that my hotel address did not exist. My hotel is literally less than half a mile from their office. When I said I'd call another car company since they didn't seem to know the area, they said fine and hung up. I wouldn't suggest using this service. It seems very hit or miss, but I think the most egregious error is telling a potential customer an address doesn't exist when they are telling you the cross streets and hotel name, as well as the fact that you'd just served them the night before. I know Brooklyn is huge and there are duplicate addresses in Manhattan and Brooklyn, but this was wildly unprofessional and ridiculous. I made reservation last night for car service this afternoon. I had to get to work even with MTA shut down after the storm. I even got confirmation. Car Never showed up at the time I scheduled. I called and called but no answer. I get that this must have been extremely busy as many Brooklynites needed transportation. But Arecibo operates business at the most unprofessional I have dealt with. Btw, this is the second time I been stood up by them. On several occasions, I've called, they've said, "Okay, 5 minutes," and then nobody shows up. When I call back, they put me on hold for 10 minutes and don't answer the call. I used to depend on them, but now I'll never use Arecibo again. Use Family Car Service instead. Family Car Service has never let me down. read more

I am literally sitting in an Arecibo car right now. Not only did it take them forever to pick me up, but when they arrived they just sat in there car and did not offer to help me load the tons of groceries I had. I had to yell for him to pop the trunk and when he finally came out of the car he was sucking his teeth. I live in a very know area off a very known street and he literally went the opposite direction of my home. I will say I am giving Arecibo 2 stars instead of zero because if you need an early morning pick up to the airport...they are champs at being on time and helpful. read more

I have used Aricebo for years and have always touted them to my friends and neighbors. However, lately they have become totally unreliable. Two weeks ago, on a Saturday evening, after getting their usual "okay - 5 minutes" answer, I waited 55 minutes for a car that never showed up...in spite of repeated phone calls to the office all of which met with "he's on his way - just another couple of minutes". Then last week, after again getting the "okay - 5 minutes", I waited 20 minutes before calling back to find out that "he was on his way - any second now". I don't know if they are going through some sort of internal office issues but, after using them so often over several years that I know the drivers by names and whose child plays what sport, I cannot imagine how the service got so bad. read more

If less than one star were possible, they would have earned it. I've used the car service many times from near Atlantic Ave subway stop, and they have arrived in 5-10 minutes. I have tried, on two occasions to order a car from Chinatown, Brooklyn. The first time, I was told it would be about 10 minutes, and after 45 minutes, and several more phone calls, excuses and no apologies, a car did arrive. Today, 4/20/2013, on this most recent occasion, I was again told it would be 10 minutes. 20 minutes later I called, and was put on hold. After 5 minutes on hold I was told it would be 3 minutes. After 10 minutes I called again. Still no car, still no apology. The phone was answered and the person said that he would try and find out about the car. After 5 minutes on hold another person picked up, as I started to say that I had been waiting 35 minutes, and been on the phone for 5 minutes the person hung up on me. Here I called a different car service, Express11, and ordered a car. I called Arecibo again, and it rang for a moment and was picked up by the phone service--where I was holding for 7 more minutes before my Express11 car arrived. I hung up. My wife also tried calling, and was holding for 5 minutes before our new car arrived. We did not get our car. We did not get any explanation or apology. We did not get any effort by Arecibo. Arecibo will not be getting our service again. Period. read more

I have loved and hate Arcibo. The drivers and the cars are usually clean and pleasant, much better than the average taxi. However, the dispatchers are abrupt, don't take time to get all the information about how to identify the person they are picking up. Today I called for a car and was told the usual "5 minutes." No car in 15 minutes. I call to check and was told the would send another car. It didn't show either. I called back to complain and was told that the driver picked up the wrong person which was impossible as there were few other people around and we would have seen them. I really resent the lie to cover up the bad service. Our family has also use Arecibo and have had similar experiences. We are all looking for a more reliable service. The positives are out weighed by being stood up numerous times. We missed our meeting today as it was too late to bother after being stood up. Being lied to just added insult to injury. I am just glad my situation was not as critical as the bridal party that was stood up even with a reservation made days ahead! Their review was scathing. What is wrong with this place. Always a long wait on the phone, they say car will come in 5 minutes. Often I wait and wait and have to call 2-3 times to ask if the car is really coming. At least 5 times I have been waiting for a car that just never shows up. The dispatchers are rude, put you on hold and then never comes back to you. I used to love them. I have a well behaved 60 lb dog who does not do well in the heat. He will sometimes lay down and refuse to walk on a hot summer day. Several times I called and they came and took us home. I always tell them I have a dog with me and they say "no problem." Last time the driver showed up, saw the dog and refused to pick me up. I must have used them at least a dozen times. Of these six times, they were on time, three times they were late by half an hour and three times they didn't turn up at all.I called them to take me to JFK and they never turned up. Uber saved the day for me. Also, there have been times, when you simply can't get through to them. You just hear a recorded message endlessly. I suspect this is when they don't have a car available aat five minutes notice and they don't want to admit that. Overall, quite unreliable. I'm done giving them second chances. They have stood me up at JFK (I felt I couldn't just jump in a cab after calling them, so I waited and waited and waited and waited - stupid). They consistently come late. I called the other day and they said their customary "five minutes", only come to come 25 minutes later. Fortunately, the second car company I called was a good sport when I let them know Arecibo had finally arrived. My girlfriend was sweating that ride, cutting it close to catch a flight.
