Every city needs a good arch, doesn't it? Lisbon has the Arco da Rua Augusta Praça do Comércio and probably others, but here's this one. On the side, an engraving commemorates the events of April 25th - the Carnation Revolution that overthrew the authoritarian government and initiated democratic rule.
The Arco de São Bento was built in 1758 on Rua de São Bento.
It was incorporated into the Guas Livres Aqueduct's Gallery of Hope. Due to remodeling projects on the area in front of the São Bento Palace, it was disassembled in 1938.
Years of dismantling went by before it was finally reconstructed in 1998, first in the grounds of Palácio da Ajuda and subsequently in Praça Espanha where it is today.
