The Mammoth Terraces run along two sections of west upper Grand Loop Road, south of downtown…read moreMammoth You drive southwest from the center of Mammoth, and when the road turns south, the terraces start just outside of town. You cant miss them, all white and frosty-looking for half-a-mile along the west side of the road. There are parking areas and trails. Then the road leaves the terraces, and after another half-mile, the road takes a hairpin turn north and comes back to the terraces. Take the turnoff to continue north for more trails and a great overlook! Or stay through another hairpin turn on Grand Loop Road and continue south through another half-mile of terraces. I mention this location because as of Aug 2026, Yelp placed the terraces in the middle of the town of Mammoth, and you cant see the terraces from there.

The trail isn't overly long so you can make the full loop in about an hour or so (two if you're a slow walker or likes to stop a lot for photos). The boardwalks are well maintained and make it easy to explore the terraces. We started with Liberty Cap, then visited Devil's Thumb, Palette Spring, Minerva Terrace, Mound Spring Terrace, Terrace Overlook, and Lower Terrace Overlook. The whole area is so beautiful, with layer after layer of different colors. To me, the terraces look like a giant, pretty layered color cake! The combination of the white, yellow, orange, and brown mineral layers with steam rising from the terraces makes Mammoth Hot Springs one of the most unique places in Yellowstone. Nothing like any of the other springs we've seen in the park this trip. Very cool! The boardwalks throughout the springs and terraces are well maintained. This stop had quite a few stairs, so keep that in mind when visiting. They have multiple parking areas along the boardwalk, so parking wasn't an issue for us. Fort Yellowstone is very cool too! There so much to see at this destination! There's a visitor's center, post office, military housing, restaurants, hotel, gas station, gift shop, etc. One of my favorite stops this trip. The Guide, Rob, worked hard to put me on fish. Second trip also with Rob was a walk and wade trip into Yellowstone National Park. Caught lots of fish, all large cutthroat trout. Last trip was also a walk and wade in the Park with Ethan, The trip was in mid September and we faced very low water levels and had a hard time finding the fish, When we did find the fish we caught a number of very larg cutthroat trout in rapid succession until the last fish splashed its way accross the eddy we were fishing, spooking the rest of the fish down. on several cast we had multiple fish chashing the fly through the pool All of the staff were very enthusiastic, and very helpful with advice and are an excellent resource.

We did get some excitement (and a taste of reality); we helped the other raft in our group collect some paddles after "The Boat Eater" got them. Our guides and the safety guide moved into action fast and demonstrated an amazing team effort. The river has some great spots, nothing too extreme, though our Canadian friends may say otherwise and a lot of smooth, easy areas. Lunch was good, just some easy sandwiches and snacks. I liked that wet suits, jackets, and water shoes were included, they definitely came in handy. Pictures are available for a reasonable price. Overall, would definitely recommend YRC anytime!!

We visited the Albright Visitor Center before heading to Mammoth Hot Springs. There are several historic buildings around the area, and I wish I had more time to look around and explore them. But the highlight for me was during sunset, when we saw lots of elk gathered around the corner of the building.
