It was similar to the butter at Pierre Gagnaire and L'Arpege in Paris. Turns out it is the same great butter from the master Jean Yves Bordier. His old technique of churning butter in old wooden barrels creating some of the yellowest, almost cheese like butters, Ive ever seen. I guess it's no surprise that Chefs like Sergio Herman, Alain Passard and Pierre Gagnaire get there product from here. It is pretty phenomenal. I wish I lived nearby and try some of his great sounding compound butters. I guess the next time Im in France a trip here might have to be on the books.

Not until I graduated from college did I know it could be an artisanal thing with deep cultural roots. Even now in the US, there are many small producers doing wonderful things. So if you really love butter, you will love what Jean Yves Bordier does. I discovered this when I ate at L'Arpege, and man is it some craze inducing stuff. As you can imaging he doesn't supply just Arpege, it's a number of high end places, because that's where they love butter the most.

This is a cheese factory that you can visit for free. We…read morewent as a group with kids during Easter 2008. The factory is very modern and produces Pont l'Eveque, Livarot and Camembert You are taken round by a guide who can speak English and German as well as French. In addition, there are various information points where, by pressing a button, you get a summary of the area in your language. Despite the factory environment, visitors are channeled through the production facilities in their own 'corridor' with viewing galleries over the particular production areas. Of course there's a faint smell from the cheese but I guess adults like it whilst it wasn't too bad for our kids. We found the whole visit very informative and interesting, especially as you see production in progress. At the end of the visit there's the inevitable shop where you can buy souvenirs and, surprise, surprise cheese. Well worth spending an hour of your time.
