The teachers lack the knowledge or skill (or both) to incorporate the ideologies or either Maria Montessori or Rudolf Steiner. They do not focus on social-emotional awareness. The teachers utilize punishment that is not rooted in Montessori or Waldorf. My son, who has neurodivergence, was punished so HARSHLY here that his neuropsychologist asked, unprompted by me, to send a letter to the school teachers to educate them on how to appropriately handle discipline and how to offer support instead, for young children. My son endured extreme trauma here. There are many other farm, forest and outdoor schools in Olympia. I recommend any of them over Fern Gully. I would stay far away from this place. They do not offer a safe environment for your child - they don't supervise the children and they do not keep them safe emotionally.

There were tanks filled with sea stars, crabs, and fish on display. A different tank housed a representation of a mud flat. Microscopes lined the perimeter on the inside of the building. Several children were peering into them shouting excitedly that "I saw this HUGE plankton!" "Look at THIS!" After I went outside and sat on the fishing dock, adult volunteers at the Nisqually Reach Nature Center took a group of children to the beach to explore. The volunteer staff at the nature center are excellent with kids. Their strong voices can be heard from a distance giving clear, fun instructions to their charges. I heard later from one staff member the kids were attending a summer camp. I didn't have a lot of time to spend at the nature center yesterday, so I will definitely be back! It's a nice area that has a surprising amount of great blue herons and even more seals. Keep in mind: This is a Discover Pass area. You will need a Discover Pass to park here.

Licensing later determined the incident appeared consistent with an accident and found no concerns regarding supervision. What was disappointing was the lack of communication and transparency afterward. During our enrollment, cameras were presented as a benefit for emergency situations. However, despite requesting footage on the day of the incident, I never received the opportunity to view it and was given multiple explanations as to why it could not be shared. The owner did not personally contact me until nearly a week later, at 9:30 PM on a Saturday, after seeing an anonymous post I had made in a local moms group seeking advice. Despite already being aware of my daughter's injury and my concerns, that was the first time the owner reached out. Ultimately, we felt trust had been lost and decided this was not the right fit for our family.

They've become like family and I'll be so so sad to leave them (so will my son!). They have cameras in the classroom so I can check in anytime, and an app that tells you what/how much your kid has eaten, their diaper changes, etc. The tuition is the same as other daycares in the area as well, and it includes diapers and wipes. Any time I have heard about student conflict, the staff responded quickly and professionally. The school takes bullying seriously and does not ignore concerns. Suggesting that nothing is done or that the environment is unsafe does not reflect what truly happens on campus. The teachers my children have had are qualified, supportive, and dedicated. I have never seen a situation where someone was teaching a subject outside of their training or credentials. And if they did, it means they have multiple endorsements. Unless you are a teacher, how on earth can you make that call about someone's personal endorcements and qualifications. What an odd thing to assume. Class sizes have been appropriate, and classroom environments are comfortable, safe, as well as managed. My 2 children have never been in a room where students were packed in or unable to learn. The comments about financial aid are especially troubling!! Scholarships and tuition assistance exist so that children from all kinds of families can access a Christian education. Speaking poorly about families who receive help is hurtful and suggests a bias that does not belong in a school review. Financial aid does not increase tuition for other parents, and claiming that it does spreads lies and misinformation. If you really want to have a bias, take a free tour. The school is pretty amazing and offers free tours all the time.
