my 13 year old daughter was there for 16 days. On the last night of her being there before discharge she was physically assaulted by a 16 and 17 year old. I did not receive a phone call, or email about this. The staff made sure to let me know all of her stuff was trashed by other patients but nobody said anything about a physical assault. I was not given her health records and her discharge paperwork conveniently did not mention an assault. It actually stated she was calm and in a good mood when she left. Not that she was sobbing and nobody could give us the full story. This set her back with her anxiety tremendously. read more

My spouse was hospitalized here for a few mental health issues, the nurses were awful when interacting with my spouse and brushed them aside in order to gossip in the corner, my spouses mother and I both called multiple times and each time we were left ringing for upwards of a few minutes only to have the phone be answered by a rude lady telling both of use to call back later. The care was quite inadequate with groups and check-ins being very underwhelming and very unhelpful, along with that there were no activities in the ward besides a television with a broken remote. I do not recommend ever coming here to help with yours or a loved one's mental illnesses. read more

Care quality. They don't put patients in the appropriate unit. You can't leave for 3 days at the minimum. If you are only a little struggling with mental health, you are still with insane people. I got punched in face, and thrown pee and water on in the middle of night. I never saw the doctor or any mental health provider at all. I would do 0 stars if i could. read more

Patient John Duggie, a 51-year-old man, suffered a serious head injury caused by another patient, had to be transported to a different hospital, & then was put on life support. Duggie's life support was removed on August 2, 2015, & he died as a result of his injuries. The chief medical examiner said John died of complications due to blunt-force injuries & ruled it a homicide. This hospital has a lot of problems. 1. The staff is not well trained. Red Cross certification for nursing assistants requires 6 weeks of training. These mental health aides get 2 weeks (!) of training, and it shows. Some of them are inattentive to patients and none of them voluntarily engage patients in conversation. I saw an elderly man sob in front of the nursing station for 15 minutes and not a single passing staffer offered a word of inquiry or comfort. In addition to this, the staff gets into heated personal arguments with patients. That is completely unprofessional. The facility is dirty. I have worked in dozens of nursing homes and hospitals and I have never seen a facility that does not change the bed linens on a daily basis. My bed was not changed in the 8 days I was there. The staff expects the patients to clean up after themselves in the common kitchen, but only a few do. Their is a diligent housekeeper in the mornings, but not the evenings or nights. Consequently, all kinds of empty food containers litter the place. Speaking of food, one patient had a considerable allergy to dairy products, duly noted on her chart and dietary information. Nevertheless, the kitchen staff regularly gave her cheese in her meal trays - and the trays themselves note her allergy. The policy concerning belongings and cell phone are outrageous. Patients can get to personal belongings only at 10 a.m. on weekdays, and still need permission from the manager, who never responds to calls and who remains absent even when the staff calls him. As for cell phones, these are locked up. Granted, cell phones are easy to steal, and the staff doesn't want patients to be glued to their smart phones all day. The policy is patients can make 1 (1!) call post admission. Some patients have been there more than 2 years. As far as therapy goes, no one gets individual therapy - granted, that would be very expensive. So there is group therapy, which takes place in a very noisy common kitchen/community room in which severely disturbed patients wander in and out loudly vocalizing and exhibiting bizarre behavior. The patients suffering from schizophrenia should not be on the same ward with non schizophrenics. At the very least, group therapy should be conducted in a quiet locked room. read more

I have just been recently hospitalized at Arbout. The psychiatric care is zero. At no point did I talk with the psychiatrist more than 10 minutes. I am hard of hearig and require hearing aids. My family tried to bring my hearing aid and charger 11 times. Once they brought them the hearing aid and the charger were lost. Once found the other hearing aid that I came in with was lost. After being in the hospital 2 and a half weeks I was finally seen by the psychiatrist for all of 5 minutes. He was always with the caseworker. The first question they asked me was "Do you have running water?". Honestly! The MHAs were all very caring and were able to follow CPI protocols. I did not need them, but as a special eduction teacher I know the protocols very well and the staff was awesome. The food was good for the most part. Safety needs to be addressed. i fell in the shower and the information was not passed on to the next shift. My stay was way too long related to incompetencies of the staff. It shouldn't take 2.5 weeks to finally evaluate a patient. They need to brush up on the ADA standards. A simple typed out questionaire could have assisted me to be evaluated. read more

Not as good as Tera Vista but was still worth my time recovering from my mental condition. If you ended up in South 3, you're lucky enough to get all the cute female staff, especially; Greer, Jackie, and Morgan. In my personal opinion, Greer had the best personality, I almost wanted to ask her out, but when I tried that on Morgan, she just said it was "inappropriate." I guess a mental hospital isn't the greatest place to find relationship opportunities, even if it was lowkey my first time and place asking a girl out in like, 12 years. I'm 24 by the way. So yea, 3/5 would not mind getting sent here again if I go through another anger episode and try to beat the life out of someone. read more

This place is the worst. I saw a social worker ONCE during my 10 day stay, the psychiatrist comes and talks to you for about 30 seconds. "Group therapy" was arts and crafts once a day at the most, absolutely nothing to do on the weekends but sit around and wait for meals. During my admission one of the staff members stole $1000 worth of jewelry from me and snuck a patient belongings sheet in with the 50 other admission sheets, I didn't sign the belongings sheet though. Doctor didn't send in my scripts to the pharmacy until 2 hours after I was discharged. Nurses are rude to the patients, I saw two nurses call a female patient fat multiple times. Only good thing about this place is the MHAs but other than that it's pretty much just a place to sleep and eat, the psychiatric care is a JOKE read more

This is the most negligent, disgusting and abusive environment to send someone. My ER doctor told me they were sending me to the worst hospital around and they were right. I had food withheld from me my entire stay. I was told I was a "rich white c**t" and that I could just live off my lard for a while. I was asked who the "f**k" I think I am when I asked why the counselors on sight only yell for intervention. He also spat in my face. I asked why my bed had chunks of human hair and blood stains and I got the pillow shoved back at me and was called a lying c-word, so I flipped the pillow over and showed him half the pillow had a blood stain that was clearly washed poorly. He continued to scream in my face and said it's patients like me that would cause this. I'm not sure what he meant, cause lack of hygeine? Because I have ocd so I'm pretty hygienic. Or did he mean patients that will ask for a clean pillow case are the ones who end up bloodying the pillow cases? The floor had blood on it upon my arrival. The dark brown hair chunks were everywhere. I was told I wasn't on a Caribbean vacation and to take what I can get. "Or would I rather no pillow" I wasn't given any of my medications. I met with the intake doctor and she told me to wait at the med counter and she LEFT. So I went without my anxiety meds and sleep meds for the duration of the time. I stayed up talking to my mom on the phone because I didn't trust the mix gendered floors or the aggressive staff. I asked if any female staff would be coming in because if I wake up and there's a man in my room I'd have a panic attack. They brought up someone from another unit who watched tv on her phone so loudly that I wanted to know how she even got her volume on her phone to go that loud. There were two perverted patients who would only walk around in johnnys with their butts fully out touching their genitalia at anyone who was closest to them. I am a fully trained behavioral counselor, I'm trained in all techniques of restraint for the residential program I worked at and the juvenile detention center I interned at. I thought the programs I worked at were bad. Don't turn off the lights because there are mice and cockroaches. The only food people generally had access too was pudding and I have never seen people eat anything so desperately. I was told I would be made small. I was told I didn't matter. I was told because of my status and background that my life was worth less. Please, do not send your family or friends to this program. I was only there 16 hours at the most. I was assaulted. I was screamed at. My life was threatened. I am generally non religious, but since I left I have prayed for each patient in there. They're in hell. I'm home now, but my heart is broken. There are no activities. There is NO THERAPY. There is no programming!!! This program is closer to jail then therapeutic in any way. I was with highly violent patients- and thank for for them. When my lips turned blue from my life being threatened it was the patients who helped me. Someone stayed with me the entire time because staff wouldn't leave me alone. Patients are zombies, there's no sense of time. None of them knew what month it was. People could walk up and ask for any medication and meds were handed to patients who would blatantly walk away and hand meds to another patient. this place needs to be shut down immediately and I will do my best to make sure everyone hears my story. read more

My son was admitted to Hospital then transferred to Arbour Hospital. He was having a phsycosis and in tough shape. Arbour Hospital was fantastic clean, very professional staff and got our son back to his old self with right medications. I am amazed what they have done in a short time and would highly recommed as another great Hospital in Boston read more

AVOID. I was here in 2014 for about a week. I was transferred from a local ER for some physical symptoms I was having, but I was also unable to sleep and eat so they gave me a psych consult. When I was checked in, I was stripped down in a small intake room that had just a curtain, and given a johnny to wear. Their policy is that they launder any clothes that you bring in because of a bedbug and lice problem. You won't have any clothes for hours after being admitted. While my intake was going on and they were searching my belongings, people were passing through the small room from the outside. Before I checked in, while I waited, I could hear/see the intake for the person who preceded me. Horribly unprofessional. The whole thing was done by a mental health worker and not a doctor or even a nurse. Not allowed: phones and other electronics, most makeup, bags, shoes with laces. Another patient was given my clothing after it had been laundered, and actually put on my clothes without staff intervention. I had to wait hours until the bed in my room was cleaned and re-made. They only made the bed with a loose top sheet over the plastic-covered mattress, no fitted sheet, so the top sheet kept coming loose and I slept a lot of the time on the bare mattress. This place is the worst I've ever been for inpatient. I saw the doctor maybe three or four times while I was there, for five minutes or so each time. He basically prescribed medication that wasn't helpful and then left me to my own devices. I saw a social worker two or three times. I explained to both her and the doctor that I had been referred from the ER and was having physical problems (trouble walking, weakness), but that was completely ignored. I'm not sure what unit I was on, but there were about four female patients and about 15 male patients. It felt very unsafe. There was a severely psychotic/out of touch male patient who kept going into the female rooms, including mine, several times. Minimal staff intervention. One patient shit himself in the main area/in front of the staff desk on the weekend. He walked around, smearing shit all over the carpet. Staff covered it with carpet powder and towels/sheets, but it was there for several days before it was cleaned up. My roommate freaked out multiple times and they failed to contain and de-escalate her in a timely and safe manner. Patients got into physical altercations regularly. There was VERY little security presence. One night I couldn't sleep (despite being drugged) because my roommate was snoring. When I complained, they didn't even have earplugs. Snoring is a common problem in inpatient units. When I protested, the mental health staff offered me Benadryl. On top of the particular medication I was taking, that could have killed me. Thankfully I knew that and declined. Groups were a joke. There was very little access to food outside of mealtimes (which was a problem for me because I was barely eating), and when they did save food it was kept unrefrigerated in the staff office. The food itself was cheap and sub-par nutritionally, absolute slop. They allowed smoking during the time that I was there, and I think they went outside about six times a day. I was pressured to go out by the "occupational therapist," but when I told her I couldn't walk well, she continued to pressure me and harangue me to go outside. She said "Well, we can get you a wheelchair," but that never happened. The day I was discharged, my husband got a Zipcar to get me home because of my problems with walking. The staff ignored our timeline, and failed to retrieve my belongings in time to let me out, so I had to leave belongings there. Overall, the place was horrifically unsanitary and dirty, the staff were phoning it in, the groups were unhelpful, I wasn't listened to at all, and there was a huge failure to manage potentially unsafe patients. This is basically the place that they dump MassHealth patients because they can get away with it and collect money for their hospitalizations while providing the absolute BARE MINIMUM of care. Avoid all Arbour services. read more

i went to arbour hospital in the 90s great stay.when i went in 2014,it was horible!the nurse on 3 west tried to get me commited because i got her suster fired for being abusive.i want to thank the idiot supervisor who let her stay a week and put her on my unit to harasss me.it makes it worse to know the nuse used her friendship with the head of bridgewater state hospital to get me commited!it didnt work kissass!we had horrible coditions,including not having clean linnens for a week.be aware you messed with the wrong mental health patient!i will do everything in my power to have you shut down,i wiil intill i leave this earth.watch out! read more

I've been to Arbour Hospital many times in the past, as a visitor for my son. It's been a few years since the last visit. Today I visited and it was the cleanest it's ever been. It literally was sparkling. I even mentioned it to my son. I interacted with half a dozen employees, many of them young people, and they were universally polite, personable and professional. I thought the staff ratio was outstanding. My son looked much, much better than he did two days ago. He did not seem sedated; rather he was lucid and able to converse at a high level. I only withheld a star based on past visits and perhaps influenced by other reviews here, but the staff today deserves five stars. read more

My loved one has spent 40 days there, drugged out of her mind. There is no treatment plan, only medication, medication, medication, and when that doesn't work, more meds. The really crazy thing is, when you tell them she's drugged out of her mind, they look at you and say, no she's not. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES LET YOUR LOVED ONE GO THERE. Absolutely avoid at ALL COSTS. If you have a loved one suffering from mental illness, an inpatient stay here will surely only make them sicker. Dirty, no privacy during visitation. We felt very unsafe as some patients were highly volatile and it seemed they were under staffed in the event of an emergency, god forbid. Holy Jesus, these people are unhelpful! No stars if only it were possible! My doctor referred me to them for further care. I called the day I got the referral, had some unbelievably unhelpful and downright sketchy guy (after going through about 4 other people, each directing the call in the wrong way). He's asking for information I know he needs as well as info that I don't see how it matters. Finally he tells me he's going to call my insurance and call me back in 15 minutes. And doesn't. Big surprise. So I try again the next day. I called and got bounced back and forth between the department I needed and the general receptionist, each time getting asked for information I didn't have. I'm sorry ladies, but no matter how many times you transfer me, the information isn't going to just appear. Finally, they tell me to call the referring doctor to get the information. I call back with the information, and YET AGAIN they bounce me around and ask for even more info I DON'T HAVE. FINALLY they send me over to someone and it's a voicemail box I get. Am I expecting a call back? No, not with how shitty these people have been doing their jobs. I'm just hoping that when I can FINALLY be seen by one of their doctors, he/she isn't a complete moron like their support staff seems to be. read more

this is the worse hospital in the world never seen such hospital like this one my daughter was in this dumb for months she was discharge but with no medications. so she was without her med for whole 2 days which make her go back on her progress she was admitted again at a local hospital and because she was without the medication for 2 days they try to help her by giving the whole dose witch make her loose more her mind. so she end it up in arbour hospital again against my pleat and her no to send her there due to the bad experience she has before. she has told me when she was discharge the first time that someone has touch her inappropriately and men were watching her when she shower and the staff make fun of her and call her stupid kid. not only that they wasn't watching her when she fall in her own urine and ended up at brigham and women hospital the second time there. so when i when to pick u her belongings a patient on the front desk visiting with a relative and that's another thing no privacy for visiting i over hear her telling her relative she was going to sued the hospital when she got out because the staff were leaving the patient urine and they were not watching them. so now i am thinking that what my daughter was telling me was real. i am so upset i just want this people to rot in hell you don't do that to someone can defend themselves what wrong with this people. read more

This is by it's nature NOT a place you WANT to go. Your fellow patients are, as an understatement, a widely varying group: some incredibly challenged, some tend to violence, many with substance abuse issues. So, how to review this place? Facilities, staff, philosophy, day-to-day interactions. The front-line staff are incredible. To deal with the demanding patients takes commitment and patience and dedication that the pay can never compensate for. People getting into screaming hair-pulling rage over hair conditioner right at the front desk? Just another typical event. Security is rightfully tight, each patient is tracked on a minute-by-minute basis. Might seem stifling, but needed. Food is ok, nutritious. Not great for a diabetic by the way. Facilities are clean. The counselling sessions seem rushed, formulaic. My discharge papers contained several factual inaccuracies - mentioned subjects that were never discussed, medications that were never offered. Ok in substance but incorrect in many details. Also had a medication error, was accidentally given a dose of some opioid (methadone?) that made me high as a kite and terrifically sick, even though I wasn't there for anything to do with opioids. I made it through without injury, it was safe, I certainly wouldn't want to go back. Again, front line staff are angels. read more

should be negative stars. My teenage daughter was transferred here by our local emergency room. Thank God the doctor had enough sense to discharge her before the usual 3 day minimum stay. First of all the patients are not allowed to comb or brush their hair at all. That means there are patients who have been in there for a long time with no means to groom themselves. I witnessed a staff member cutting off the hair of a teenage girl whose hair had gotten so bad. I feel this is neglect. Second they tell you what to pack and bring for your child but did not give my child half of her stuff and when it came to discharge they could not find everything I had brought for her and it was in 3 different places before they found everything. very disorganized. My child was there less than 2 days and her stuff was lost and misplaced. I also witnessed staff being very rude and uncaring in the adolescent unit. I hope to never have my daughter go through what she went through again but if it did I would refuse to let her go here read more

Talk about a lawsuit... Someone with a good lawyer could own this place as they did so much wrong and very little right... DO NOT SEND LOVED ONE'S HERE AS IT'S JUST NOT HELPFUL FOR ANYONE...Lazy staff, Unprotected from people that needed to be in State Mental wards. Dirty, had to make my own bed in a hospital?? Really??? Food gross, No groups or regular sit down and talk with everyone at once. Blackboard says they have all thee things going on but it's a lie as all they do is change the date at the top of the chart.. I was harassed and subjected to the point of after 4 days I went after another female patient as I had warned staff many times about this woman. But once I did I was moved to Arbour Quincy which is like a wonderful country club.. I went from hell to heaven in a single ride.. The beds were made and people were not yelling constantly or at all for that matter. Food was great, people wonderful, staff super helpful and plenty of space to have time to think. 2 TV rooms for those that like TV. also a radio so you can have music and about 4 rooms you can have privacy to a degree. They did bed checks every 15 minutes and accountability. They have an even ground outside area where you could shoot hoops or sit in the shade or sun depending on what you want.. This is what treatment for a mental health problem is suppose to be like... STAY AWAY FROM JAMAICA PLAIN ARBOUR FACILITY...HELL ON EARTH.. read more
