The Morton Arboretum holds an annual 5K through its grounds every year and I did it, for the first…read moretime, today. As I arrived and later ran, I realized I had never been to the Morton Arboretum before. It is beautiful! The 5K was really great. I would say, my only complaint, is that they should consider having waves or corrals next year. Everyone was released to run at once, which made the path a bit crowded, especially in mile 1. This didn't really bother me because my goal was to take my time and really soak in the surroundings. I do many 5Ks, many of which are on city streets or along the lakefront. -So to do one on such pretty grounds (sort of an open field alternating with a forest vibe), it was really cool. You leave the city of Chicago and you really feel like you are in a whole 'nother world! My other feedback is that I was hoping to see the vibrant hues of the leaves changing for fall (since it is called the Fall Color Run). Everything was still lush and green! -Not sure if it would be better to hold it later in the year? It's a tough call -the weather was perfect today -it was mild (60) and overcast so it made for great running weather. Maybe having it later when the leaves change would lead to much cooler temps? Not sure, but it's food for thought. I'm glad I did it, either way, as it was a really nice event overall. Nice people, well organized and a whole "festival" vibe afterward with many vendors, food and a live band (Soda -a local cover band). Regardless of the leaf color, I will be back for the beautiful, serene run next year!

2011 was another great year. The trail is just as gorgeous as ever and parking was a breeze. I…read moreshowed up 40 minutes early, parked, picked up my packet and got to racing. TMI, but I made the mistake of eating really spicy Indian food the night before and got sick. I was so thankful for the Porta Potty at the 1/2 mile mark. Wish there had been more along the trail or at least one near the finish line. They had ample toilets at the end of the event area, but when I went to use them I felt little desire to walk all the way back to the festivities. Their toilets were still in better condition than most race events'. So why the star downgrade? A couple reasons - Packet pick up was organized alphabetically, but from right to left instead of left to right. I got in line where I thought A might be, but it turned out I was over by Z and had to get back in line on the other side. This annoyance was offset by the chuckle I got from the handwritten MEDIAM on one of the shirt boxes. But the real reason I'm a little pouty today? I ordered (and paid for) a Medium shirt. Medium was written in my registration and on my bib. The woman checking me off even told the guy grabbing the shirts that I needed a "Mediam." So you can imagine my disappointment as I pull out my much anticipated Zorrel running shirt and discover it's an XL.

I haven't done a race since the 2013 Shamrock Shuffle, so my expectations for myself at this event were pretty low. However, I didn't do so badly and I had a great time! The Lisle Chamber Spring Sprint seems to be relatively overlooked. I think the highest Bib # I saw was 350 and I doubt if more than 300 people actually showed up that day, so the course wasn't crowded. The course was really nice, too. It follows some streets but is mostly kept to a paved trail. It starts at the Lisle Senior High School and winds around the Lisle Park District. It was relatively flat but offered enough low grade inclines and declines to keep it interesting and challenging. I was quite pleased with the goodies offered here. Let's face it, a lot of people do it for the SWAG. I got a race shirt, which I'll probably donate to Goodwill. I was much happier with the complimentary bagels, bananas, oranges, and Nesquik chocolate milk. The Nesquik bunny mascot was even there and I got a picture with him. We also got to watch him get down and funky with the music while we waited for race results. Though, the free post-run stretches provided by Athletico were by far my favorite thing. Since the Sprint is held in March, it's hard to say what the weather will be like for this race. I was originally expecting it to be in the low-mid 50s. My weather app was telling me it was 32 degrees when I woke up. I think it got up to the low 40s and at least held there for the event. The temperature quickly dropped afterwards and we got a snow storm later that day, so keep a close watch on the weather to plan accordingly.

2012 was the 15th year for this event. It's run on Thanksgiving Day and the motto is "Run fast,…read moreeat later, no penalty!" This year the race was limited to 7,500 participants and they sold out at least 3 weeks before the event. *Easy sign up online. *Packet pick up at Naperville Running Company was a total breeze. I went on the last day, and I was still in and out in less than a minute. Very organized and the volunteers are very excited for you. Lots of smiles and "good lucks" *Virtual goodie bag. Links online to special services/treats for the runners. (But I still wish we had some kind of real goodie bag--energy bars and the like) *Long-sleeve technical T-shirt that I will wear with pride. *The race starts and ends at Naperville Central HS so you're running down a few business streets and through residential areas. The course is totally flat and there is some natural preserve scenery. But what was most entertaining was the various display of "turkey" wear people were sporting. Kudos to the girl with the brown sweatshirt, brown sparkly tutu and orange tights! Kudos to the girl in the full body furry turkey costume as well! I saw chefs, one or two pilgrims, but mostly turkey hats and turkey headbands. *Friends and family could hang out in the gym before/during the race. It was pretty cold in the morning so it was nice to stay a little warm before heading out for the start. *Water available before and at the midway point. Water and bananas at the end of the race. Well, bananas for the fastest runners anyway. (They ran out) *FREE pancake breakfast in the HS cafeteria afterward too! I would totally participate in this event again.

The DuPage Drones are a new Prospect League Baseball (Collegiate Wood Bat) Team, and they can PLAY BALL! Often scoring 5 runs or more, they "earn" the night's ticket holders a free scoop from their sponsor, the Downers Grove Culver's. The staff is great at planning special theme nights and entertaining with flying drone races, contests, characters in costume, fireworks, and a run around the bases. They have an assortment of #Drones gear available for purchase - hats, T-shirts, pullovers. The concession stands offer a wide variety of food choices for reasonable prices. There are all of your typical choices - hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, beer, etc., but the last time I was there I had a Caesar salad and a frozen Strawberry Margarita - both YUMMY! The stands are filled with folding seats with backs, not just bleachers, so they are comfortable, and there are plenty of tables available for dining use. The restrooms are very clean with hot tap water at the sinks.

You could choose to wear masks or not since it was just our family in the room but we chose to wear them. Everything was really clean. We saw the guy working the place spraying cleaner on things as we walked up. There was hand sanitizer on the tables. Lots of pinball machines. Maybe 10? My husband and I got a huge kick out of playing those. My kids much preferred the shooting and driving games. I would say the two hours we were there was about what my kids needed (they're 10, 7 and 4). Just enough time to get lots of play in and not be sad they had to leave. Overall it was a great experience and I would totally do it again!

Some of our favorite trails are on the east side, but we have so much more the explore! They have a variety of events that are included with admission as well as events that require an additional purchase. There is a small café that sells drinks and small bites. I have tried a few different lattes and they were good. They also have a restaurant and their food always smells delicious, but I have yet to try anything from there. The restaurant itself has a beautiful view of their lake. I definitely recommend a membership if you live nearby and plan to visit multiple times a year. Another great benefit of the membership is the reciprocity to other gardens throughout the country. A great value!

I last visited the Morton Arboretum when I was a teen and have wanted to make a return trip for…read moresome time. I recently attended a tour of the Arboretum via a small (10 people) van tour from another Chicago metro area community about 45 minutes from the location. Of course, it is very different; there is a sit-down restaurant with very good food, The menu is on their webpage. There is also a carry-out location very near the restaurant. There is also a gift/book shop near the entrance. The choices made by the buyer are truly one of a kind and in the best of taste. There are ample visitor facilities and places to sit down. I do not think that there were any special events taking place and if they do there appears to be ample parking which includes chargers for electric cars. Some of the facilities associated with the Arboretum are not close to the visitors' center but closer to the entrance/exit. The walking paths are do-able for hardy folks as well as those who are not. Lots of kids and parents were present, all having a great time. The tram is highly recommended as it gives a one of a kind look at the Arboretum, its past and its future and our driver/guide was terrific. The cost is $10 for non-members, and well worth it. As I am an infrequent visitor I would not be a good candidate for a membership; if I lived closer to the site and were a frequent visitor the cost-savings for an Arboretum membership would be a nice savings I think. Lastly there was a bit of confusion about the admission pricing for our group; our trip organizers may have been quoted one price, and we were charged another upon arrival at the entrance to the Arboretum. We were paying per attendee not as a group, so perhaps that is where the confusion began. Perhaps pre-payment is preferred here. Group sales for the Arboretum would be able to clarify this I am sure.
