Stafford Pet Superstore is like your basic pet supply store, blown up about four times. It…read moreenormous, with a crazy range of pet products for your cat, dog, bird, lizard, fish, whatever. There is always some scaly reptile near the door whenever I go in, and it kind of freaks me out, but is also kind of cool. But once you get past the slithery guys there's a world of pet products to choose from. Dog and cat products are the most abundant with collars, beds, shampoos, flea treatments, chew toys, litter boxes, and every other pet item you could need or imagine. Turn to the left when you walk through the door however, and you'll find yourself in the bird section of the store (from the car park entrance). Here you'll find your choice of cages, seeds, treats, and a selection of cockatiels and budgies to add to your family. I love to visit the puppies and kittens (always) whenever I visit a pet store, but I also like to look in on the birds because I feel like people pay these poor guys much less attention. Pop in here if you're looking for some pet supplies or if you're looking to give a little guy a new home. The staff are very helpful and can answer any questions you may have. They also have a great reward system when you buy science diet cat or dog food that gives you a free purchase once you reach a certain amount. Fur, fun, and rewards all in one place.

You'll find various dog beds, cat scratch towers, collars, leads, toys, animal delicacies (pigs ears and such), and a whole underwater farm of sea grass for fish. The aquarium section of Pet Super Store is pretty stellar. I walked into the room, and as far as they eye could see, there were fish tanks set against dark blue walls. It was easy to imagine being underwater while I was in there, just me, hanging out with my fishy friends. You've got your usual pet enclosures, with the puppies chasing each other's tails, and the kittens fighting and trying to paw and chew each other's faces off. I didn't see birds, however, the Pet Super Store is huge, and so they could have been in some small nook I didn't find. There is always someone nearby to help you out with anything and the service is quite friendly. They're people that just love sharing stories about their pets. "Oh, look what the dog just did" types- just as pet store staff should be.

They don't…read moresell puppies or kittens which I think is the most important way of judging a pet store because pet stores that sell puppies and kittens not only support puppy farms and dodgy breeders, but also encourage the impulse purchase of an animal that requires a great deal of commitment. The staff at Petbarn are knowledgeable and helpful, and are all animal lovers with lots of experience in pet care. The range of fish and aquarium products here is excellent and they have staff dedicated specifically to helping you establish and maintain your own aquarium. Another thing I like about Petbarn is that pets on leads are welcome, so if you need to get your dog a new collar for example, you can actually bring them in to see what fits (and you can count on them getting cuddles and treats from the staff as well!). Petbarn has a wide variety of pet products including foods, grooming products, accessories, toys, and treats. They also sell some medications such as worming and flea treatments. The staff here are happy to consult with you about whatever pet advice you need. Many times I've come into Petbarn to seek advice about my fish tank and have had a long, helpful conversation with a staff member and then gone home without needing to buy anything because the staff don't push you to buy things in return for their help. For this reason, whenever I need to buy anything for my dogs or aquarium, I head to Petbarn. They also have a customer loyalty card and lots of information about obedience, puppy pre-school, and other pet activities.

We changed our cat over to the complete meal and she has never been better: she isn't thirsty all the time from eating dry food, she actually ENJOYS eating, and she she's... as crazy as ever. You can get the "complete meal" for either dogs or cats, which is a mix of raw, human-grade, ethically-sourced meat (the owner, Jenny, ensures she personally knows the owner of the farm that the meat comes from) and some seasonal vegetables; it's all frozen, so no preservatives. If you'd like to give them something to chew on, you can get a range of bones, from chicken frames (our cat's favourite) to kangaroo tendons and tail bones. There's also VeganPet food for those who want to mix things up. The owner, Jenny, is extremely passionate about animal rights, as evidenced by the range of posters and pamphlets around. She is also a dog listener, so if you have a poorly behaved pooch, have a chat with her! The shop has some natural remedies for a range of illnesses, and it next door to an animal naturopath, if you're interested in some alternative therapies for your pet. If you haven't been before, go in and ask Jenny to explain her philosophy and if you're unsure about anything. But I cannot recommend this shop, its philosophy, and its animal food enough.
