They claimed to be professional and said "we will pay all the actors" but never mentioned they will take away payment if you did somthing they didn't like. Every student gets a lot of individual attention here, and they rotate the parts so everyone has a chance to shine and there are not just a few stars (there were about 5 Willy Wonkas and about 5 Charlie Buckets, for example). Separately from this they also have a "professional" children's acting group, the Lunch Bunch, who I haven't seen.

The pace was quite fast and I wished we had a few more rehearsals before the show. I guess this is the way artists also feel. Welcome to the theatre world.

The show opened with two acts in a cube, which were fairly comical, especially a section involving swimming gear, performed to Strauss' Blue Danube Waltz. This portion was a great insight into the group's philosophy and attitude towards the performance. The rest of the program utilized the purpose-built climbing wall, which served as one of the coolest, most original stages I've ever seen. The dancers performed several different pieces, rotating through the group. The Isabel von Rittberg's choreography flowed beautifully, and was executed perfectly. My favorite performers were von Rittberg, Ryan Gaunt, and Sadie Landram. The dancers were as poignant and graceful as they were strong and steady. The vignettes provide commentary on the rhythms which dictate our lives. Each piece communicates different emotions, feelings, and situations, from a love story to individuals scaling the same high cliff face. My favorite pieces were "My Heart grew wings beneath Desert Skies", "Levitate", and "Heart-Core". I highly recommend that you take advantage of ANY opportunity to see this group. After a random chat with a stranger at Tully's Coffee shop in downtown Berkeley and dinner at Sushi…read moreKo, a group of us went over to the Ashby Stage, conveniently located next to Ashby Bart, to watch Ascendance Project's opening home season show. The Ascendance Project is a group of seven dancers who challenge their choreography on vertical walls without the use of ropes! WHAT!!! Talk about taking dance to a whole new level. You know you've got talent when you can dance on vertical walls, have in-sync coordination and hold horizontal body positions off the wall. At one time I was reminded of lizards crawling under the desert rocks. The graceful acts even had dancers performing upside down in positions I'd never thought possible. The lighting effects created dancing shadows which at times accentuated the dancers in the act. It was beyond any dance performance I've seen. Never seen a show like this? Don't worry, they have more shows to inspire you to hit the gym. And if you miss their home season performance during March 6 to the 14th, then you can consider challenging yourself in one of their classes. It might come in handy if you ever decide to go rock climbing.

Nissi's is a great event space. I know it as a host to local (and sometimes not so local) music…read moregroups. On their website, you will find a full roster of shows to include local bands, comedy, and a lots of tribute bands. They are also open to private events. I find myself at Nissi's about once per month to see my favorite a capella Rock Band, Face Vocal Band. Face has performed at Nissi's for over 250 shows, and while they have been hosted at venues around the country, and literally around the world, Face loves to perform frequently for their local fanbase. Nissi's and Face built a great relationship starting two decades ago, at Nissi's former location, and traversing the years to tonight, where I will see what must be my 15th or 20th Face Vocal Band performance at their home base--Nissi's (I've been to both the former and current NIssi's locations). At Nissi's there is literally not a bad seat in the house. They have high tops in the back, where you can see over all the tall audience heads and look the performers right in the eye, and they have a lot of floor seating of various table sizes. It's not a huge venue, I think sitting about 75 in the audience. Tickets are reasonable priced-- I paid $35 each for mine tonight. While my husband and I have our favorite high tops for two, this time, I chose a four-top high-top to accommodate my visiting family and myself. I like the high tops in the back, firstly, because I'm short and can see over everyone, but mostly because the sound is great when you aren't too close to the stage. You can also choose a table for two, four, or 6, or whatever you need. Of course, you can always purchase a single ticket at any table with an opening. Meet someone new! The food is also good. There is a menu of reasonable size, and you can purchase a delicious and varied cheese plate, choose from a variety of appetizers, or go full boar with a large burger (poultry and plant versions are available), a local trout piccata plate, tacos, or even a beef stew. There are salads, sandwiches, and wraps. There is a full bar, and a selection of wines and beers that are not too shabby. The servers are skilled and unobtrusive, as you can choose to arrive early and finish your meal ahead of the show, or eat during the show if you prefer (food or drink purchase is not required, but hey, why not live a little?). I find the desserts to be a bit much--large and too sweet, so I have usually skipped that unnecessary splurge. Until... two months ago when they added a homemade lemon sponge cake and ice cream to the menu. OMG, so good! Not overly sweet, and refreshingly indulgent. The have shows most nights at 7 pm and most of the tickets are $20. We are welcomed to bring our dinner and treat it as our living rooms so I tend to show up at doors so I can be finished with dinner before the music starts . Also THe Muse is heavily involved in the yearly Lafayette Music Festival bringing multiple bands thru out the day. Lots of quality acts come thru on a regular basis and I am pleased to live a mile away.
