There are now at least five supposedly gourmet burger places in Itaim and so far Katz is squarely in the middle of the pack in my book. The burger was pretty solid, good flavor and good ingredients. They have a fun mix of American soda pop including dr pepper and cherry 7up as well as a nice beer selection. They serve the ubiquitous SP batatas rusticas (home fries with rosemary and sea salt) but also serve crinkle cut fries for a twist. Overall I was pleased with my food but not blown away. The problems in the business, which they could still work out, as it's been open for under a month, are in the logistics. The concept is that you order at the counter, then wait for your buzzer to go off when your food is ready. They pack all orders in a to go bag whether you plan to eat there or take the food away so there are no utensils provided and all dos is eaten in paper wrappers or trays. I found this part a bit obnoxious and wasteful. The bag, which they staple shut, is tall and narrow when it should be wide and low so that you can easily see what's inside and make sure your order is correct before leaving the counter. The burgers are wrapped in wax paper but not in a way such that you can unwrap just half of it and use the paper to keep the burger together as you eat it with your hands making for a pretty messy experience. The fries came in a box but not with a lid. Almost everyone threw the bag away. It seems like a waste of trees to me. They also were not that fats and we ended up having to ask about our order which was up at the counter only the buzzer had not gone off. I hope they can work out the kinks before the burger craze dies out.

Here's the thing: I don't eat steak, pork, or most of the meats they specialize in, and I'm not a big fan of buffet or all‑you‑can‑eat restaurants in general. We came here because a coworker invited us, and she was being really kind, so I didn't think to check the price beforehand. I ended up only eating the salad, and with dessert my total came to about $66. For someone who doesn't eat the main attraction, that price felt a bit high -- honestly, I felt a little ripped off, LOL. Not the restaurant's fault at all; this is exactly how churrascarias work. It just wasn't the best match for my eating habits. Next time, I'll politely turn down the invite or suggest a different spot that fits my preferences better. But if you do enjoy steakhouse-style dining and want the full Brazilian churrasco experience, Barbacoa delivers exactly what it promises.

I love several other Churrasacarias in São Paulo, but this one is a real standout. We had a group dinner with friends and coworkers, and we were led to a large table, and the staff fawned all over us. They were very accommodating and friendly. The food and wine were all top-notch, and they brought whatever cut of meat you asked for, instead of waiting for the "good stuff" like the Picanha. The salad bar was great as well, although I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have any Feijoada, which is usually a staple at any Churrascaria in Brazil. Again, there are several good Churrascarias here, but if you want the best, you won't get any better than Barbacoa!

I was literally still dreaming about it the next day; the food was really that good. Another standout dish was the braised short rib with sticky rice, a Brazilian specialty that was mouthwateringly delicious, with the beef and rice combo melting in your mouth. The toppings and sides were excellent as well. This was at an upscale restaurant, and the bill came out to half of what we would normally pay in the states. Food like this would cost at least two to three hundred dollars in California! For the price we are paying and the quality we are receiving, this is absolutely outrageous. I'd really like to see São Paulo's state government clean up its act and do more for the city, because there's no reason it shouldn't be a top tourist destination. I'm not much of a foodie, so it's nice having friends who are. You can just trust their recommendations and go along for the ride!!

We started in the downstairs area, which has a small but sufficient bar, and then moved upstairs, where there was a live band performing a mix of Brazilian and American songs. The bar service was about average speed, as far as pubs go. I'd recommend upgrading your caipirinha to Nega Fulô from their house standard. There was a R$15 charge to get in, which is super reasonable with htel live band--actually, ridiculously cheap by American standards, given the current exchange rate that makes it $3.75 for entrance. Word to the wise: The bathrooms are in a sub-upstairs area from the main upstairs area (if you're on the second floor, you'll see what I mean). Surprisingly clean for an Irish pub. They also use a card system where, upon entry, they give you a card to which you'll charge all your food and drinks, and then pay at booths on the way out. Even though it was a bit crowded, the place had a very friendly environment. People weren't pushing you out of the way or anything like that, which was refreshing. On the whole, we had a good time and enjoyed the band.
