BTW I posted this on the Apple community forums and google reviews and it got deleted almost immediately.
I purchased an iPhone X for my wife and picked it up from the Brisbane CBD retail store yesterday (18/11/17). Unfortunately, the phone only worked for a couple of hours, turned itself off and never turned back on. This morning at 10am I made my way to the Carindale retail store to get it resolved but was disappointed by my experience.
When the store opened at 10am I made my way to the Genius bar where I was greeted by a staff member who addressed me as 'bro'. I prefer sir, or better still, my name Allan. I get that they're trying to appeal to the younger crowd but I don't feel 'hey bro, how can I help you' to be an appropriate customer greeting in a retail environment. Although having a $1500 phone fail after 1 day is annoying, what I found more annoying is the fact it took 50 minutes and 5 staff members to sort out a DOA swap for me in store. That's right, I was one of the first people in the store when it opened at 10am, and didn't leave until 10:50am! I think is far too long for what should have been a straightforward process. To add to this, Apple Carindale refused to replace the $40 glass screen protector that was put on the now bricked phone. They explained that it's an aftermarket accessory and is akin to you purchasing a car, putting a tint on the windows and then having return the car the very next day for a replacement; except this would never happen in real life. Brand new cars don't suffer catastrophic failure overnight so bad they require replacement the following day.
'Dave', whom I'm assuming is one of the managers at Carindale made a point of stating emphatically that there is no way we would be replacing the screen protector. I find it strange that a $1500 phone fails on its own in less than a day, through no fault of my own, and they won't put a screen protector back on the replacement phone? From my point of view, I just wanted the phone back to the way it was before it failed (i.e. has the ability to turn on and has a screen protector installed), but it's ok they'll happily sell me another screen protector. In retrospect, I would have even accepted acknowledgement from the staff that this is a crap situation, sorry about the inconvenience, we'll organise a replacement for you (or similar); instead, all I got was, I'll check the back room; if we have DOA stock we do, if we don't, we don't. Anyway, 'Dave' then gave me a story about how he personally doesn't use screen protectors, they're dirty, ugly, detract from the looks, and questioned why I even needed one as "our phones have the toughest glass ". I let this go as by this point I'd waited almost and hour for a phone swap, only to be told I'll need to spend more money and was completely over the situation and wanted out.
I hope that by the time I need to replace my iPhone 6s, I will have long forgotten about this bad experience and fork over my hard earned for the latest and greatest Apple iPhone XI, S, special/red edition, or whatever they're spruiking at the time.
