Came to the this theater to catch the Choir of Man Chicago show. The show was very exciting and interactive. The show was based on a traditional Pub. The stage featured a working Pub in which the audience was allowed to purchase Revolution Beer off the draft. The beers were cold and plentiful. The theater itself is intimate and not a bad seat in the house. We sat off to the left center about 10 rows high and didn't miss a thing. The venue had plenty of bathroom stalls. In addition to the traditional theater items for sale, you could purchase drinks and snacks. We opted for canned cocktail: Mule by Absolute. I also grabbed a pin to add to my collection. On to the show. Let's just say the show has it all: Dancings, Tap, Live Music, and of course singing. And the fellas pulled out some stepping/stomp moves too. Throughout the show there were lots of surprises...that I won't spoil. Yet, there is an opportunity to receive complementary beer, snacks and commemorative coasters. The show is leaving for a few months but will be back in September. Honestly, I would go again. The talent, acoustics and handsome fellas make this show 5 Stars!!! read more

My wife gifted me with tickets on a random Tuesday night to see Choir of Man at the Apollo theater in Lincoln Park. First time going to the theater although I passed by many times. It's conveniently located close to Fullerton CTA station and it's a great little strip with lots of restaurants and pubs. Speaking of pubs that's the primary subject of the show. A bunch of singing guys from all walks of life hanging out in a British styled pub. It's live interactive theater and the show also features a fully functioning bar. The audience is invited to participate in the songs, activities, and libations. The whole cast was extremely talented. In addition to featuring some amazing vocalists many played instruments and I honestly liked the tap dancing myself. It's a fun show with great appreciation towards the world's dwindling public houses presenting them as a place for people to share the trials and tribulations of life and instilled a sense of community. Definitely recommend checking out this fun and uplighting show. read more

Talk about fun! I love theater. I love listening to great music and fabulous dancing. Coming from NYC, I grew up on theater. When I got an email on Monday saying that the Apollo theater invites me to a free show, I felt so excited! The Apollo Theatre hosts the musical, "The Choir of Man". It features an all male ensemble who sing, dance and act from an Irish pub. The cast plays various music instruments including the piano, guitar, melódica, trumpet, and ukelele. The performance showcases songs such as "Welcome to the Jungle", "Hello" (by Adele), "Don't Wake Me Up", and "500 Miles". With that said, the ensemble gets the audience involved with the show. Before the show begins, one of the cast members asks audience members if they will feel comfortable coming up stage and dancing. With us sitting in the front row, one stage ensemble asked me. I said no. The ensemble goes around the audience and ask what drink are you drinking? Some asked me, I answered a ginger ale (I don't drink). The show lasts for 90 minutes. During the show, the cast members give out free beers and even snacks to the audience. Just like a party, the stage features a working bar at the center of the set. Fun and engaging. I'm so amazed by the show, have to say it's one of the best show that you don't want to miss in Sept 2024 when they will come back. Make sure you rsvp the ticket and fully enjoy the fantastic show will happiness. This is the first time ive been a show that all the actors/singer/artiest all drinking during the performance. Apparently they enjoy every single second of it, they also share the happiness (beer and snacks) with audience. The vibe is just too good to memorize in a chill and tipsy mode. Honestly didn't know what to expect when I heard " Choire of man" - decided to let it stay that way and we could learn more at the show! The energy these men brought into the room was INCREDIBLE. The bar has a working pub on stage where they were handing out beers. The music, signing and overall acting was 10/10 - you could see these actors bringing their 10000% - truly an exhilarating feeling being in the hall. I saw Bachelor: The Unauthorized Musical Parody with a group of friends in mid-January. The show was hilarious. The Apollo did a good job of checking vaccine cards and requiring masks. This was one of the first live theater performances that I returned to and I felt very safe. The theater is small, so every seat is good! Review of the Djembe Show 24 March 2pm Drums | Cross culture | Energy | MC Drums: just like the ad says... every seat has a drum! Which made the experience very engaging, fun, and active. Cross culture: the storyline takes it back to the origin of the djembe drum and how it influences music throughout generations. It also ties in historical roots of why different sounds came about based on geographical location. Super interesting! Energy: it is electric! The band, MC's , music quality makes you move in your seat and compelled to follow the rhythm. Luckily you have a drum at your seat to transfer that beat. MC: the cast was incredible, but the MC was really the star of the show. He kept the room engaged and made the experience enjoyable. Nathan and I always joke every event needs a hype man, and this is yet another example of what a man with a drum can do for an event. The lead singer is definitely a sight as well with the costume changes and genres she explores. Great job! Pro tip: buy your tickets on discounted websites because they are cheaper than the door. Recently, four of us saw the The men & Their Music concert at the Apollo Theater. This neighborhood theater is incredible and a hidden secret. Upon entering the theater, we were directed to go to the lobby which is located on the second floor. The lobby is the on the smaller side with the ticket booth, sitting area, concession stand and a small bar. We were directed to one of the theaters. The staff members were friendly while passing out the playbill and directing us to our seats. The theater has stadium seating so there's no bad seat in the house. I will say, the chairs are padded so they are very comfortable. Another plus, was the acoustics which was excellent. There is limited valet parking and street parking available. Overall, this is a great theater and I would recommend this place. read more

I have seen many wonderful productions at the Apollo Theater. I've also had the pleasure of hearing the founder speak and her passion and commitment is evident. The seats are comfortable. There isn't a bad seat in the house. It's smaller, sound is great, and has good views all the way around. The Apollo is just a landmark in the neighborhood with a great park nearby and some pretty good restaurants in the area as well. Parking around there isn't terribly difficult, lots of side streets and paid parking behind the theater. The only thing is that the entrance is a bit confusing without a lot of signage in the lower lobby, it tripped me up, thinking I walked through the wrong door or something, but clearly it's just me because no one else seemed to have any issues. read more

This is the first time I've been to the Apollo Theater. I've walked past this many times while in the area... But never went in before. I like this theater it's small but modern and very cute with stadium seating let you see the stage from anywhere you're sitting I don't think there is a bad really anywhere in the house. The theater is really cute and the staff are very accommodating and friendly... It has an improv feel which I like more than the overdone Productions that are usually at the major theaters. The play was funny and cute but since I just started watching Game of Thrones... It contained a lot of spoilers for me but on the other hand as I go through the seasons I kind of know what's going to happen and I recognized the milestones. I will definitely be coming back here if there are some more plays that pique my interest. read more

Culturally, I have seen the gamut of musical performances from operas in Paris to hellogoodbye at the Congress Theater. I listen to B96 and 103.5 on the drive to/from work. The only musicals I've seen have been Phantom of the Opera in LA and Rent here in Chicago, but I loved them both. So when I landed free tickets to see Million Dollar Quartet at the Apollo, I was excited to attend, but hadn't heard of the show before. I was not nearly as appreciative as I should have been. As the crowd began to file into the theater, I began to feel very conspicuous. After all, my date and I were the only ones under the age of 25, with the exception of those who came with parents/grandparents. Then they announced that the performance was going to be an hour and 40 minutes without intermission. Really? No intermission? I was surprised. It was the epitome of the Susan Boyle incident, magnified by 10. We were skeptical, and wondering if this was about to be a colossal waste of a Friday night. Then the first number began, and I was blown away. "Blue Suede Shoes" is a classic for a reason - hearing everyone sing and play together immediately drew in the audience. When Dyanne (Kelly Lamont) sang "Fever", you knew everyone in the room felt those chills coursing through them - I really understood what "electrifying" felt like. I could only imagine what it would have been like to hear Peggy Lee sing it live. The actors were all wonderfully talented. To act and sing is impressive, but to also play an instrument? I sat there in awe. As someone who's played piano since she was 5, I had particular appreciation for Jerry Lee Lewis (Levi Kreis)'s prodigious ability to make the keys fly up like that. The Apollo was the perfectly sized venue for the crowd. It was awesome to be part of this particular audience, where some 50 and 60 year olds (I'm being generous here) actually got up for the final numbers to dance and sing along. We all stood, clapped and screamed for an encore. I completely forgot about the lack of intermission. I would have gladly sat through TWO hours and 40 minutes of that performance. And I am so thankful for Yelp and MDQ because I would otherwise not have had this amazing experience. I went home and looked up the four performers, the storyline, the youtube performances left. How is it that Britney Spears has millions of hits and these songs less than 100,000? I really understand the cliche of cantankerous old men griping that the kids listen to such junk nowadays...because really, we do. We go to Britney Spears concerts to watch the dancing, not the lip synching. We hope that she'll say/do something stupid, be able to capture it and upload it to youtube first. Don't get me wrong, I love my Lady GaGa still, but there's definitely more Elvis and JLL on my iPod now, thanks to the Million Dollar Quartet. I'm a big fan of small intimate theaters where you actually can see the actors and hear what they are saying versus the huge venues where you might as well be watching a football game! Apollo theater is such a venue. My first trip to this theater was to see "Baby Wants Candy" which in itself will generate a good review. But the Apollo theater holds it own, with good sound, stadium seats which allow for unobstructed views, and even enough room between rows for my long legs! Drinks at the small bar up front are a little on the pricey side- but don't fret! Mention something about it to the bartender and he may cut you a little slack like he did us especially if you are ordering multiple drinks! As for parking, there is a paid lot to the north of the theater but beware as you have to be out of it one hour after the show ends so don't go bar hopping and leave your car. The good news is that there is plenty of metered parking out front so you will probably be able to move your wheels. Love this neighborhood theater with it's obscure shows. You can bet I'll be in the audience here another day soon. read more

Since I had free tickets courtesy of Yelp, I can't say much about the ticket process save for the Will Call window attendant was polite and fast! (It took about 10 seconds, no line no waiting). The men's bathroom was a little wonky. Horribly small and awkward to get in and out. A separate review for MDQtet will follow, but do go beforehand because there is no intermission! Our show had great sound, staging and lighting. Top notch professionalism here at the Apollo. I love that they have a full bar in the lobby. Makes for a great pre-show atmosphere. This show Million Dollar Quartet ROCKS!! The theater is a little on the worn out side of new. Well a whole lot really. But they have put new seats in and are redoing the lobby. So improvements are coming. I have been to this venue I believe 8 times to see The Million Dollar Quartet. Now there is a reason other than the show is great. My number 2 son works on the play. He is the set chief. So if you know the play and when the phone rings for Sam Phillips to pick up that is my son ringing the phone!!! Cool huh? Well he does more than that but the rest is inside stuff could not possible tell anyone. :) I love the music in this play and have seen it evolve over the past 3 years. Seen all the actors change and changes to the script always fun. So much talent. So I have seen this play here in the STL. and in Chicago. read more

I agree with all the great things said about this theater, and I also loved Million Dollar Quartet. But I wouldn't categorize this as a 5 star venue for a few reasons. 1) While the stadium seating was really great at making an accommodating space intimate, the seats were super squeaky. Every weight shift was amplified, despite the fact that I saw a raucous, rockin' show. But I think this was exacerbated by 2) the fact that the house continued seating people well into the performance. In several waves. I get it, folks paid their hard-earned money and have the majority of the show ahead of them, but it's disruptive and I was really surprised to see it done. But the staff was great, will call was easy, and the sound was excellent. There was a well stocked little concession stand selling lots including non-alcoholic drinks for under $3 and martinis for $10. read more

Went with friends to Wed matinee of Million Dollar Quartet. Spectacular show in a small, comfy venue. Felt like we stopped in to watch friends Jam! Most often I was simply mesmerized. I felt like I was transported back in time when my mom played Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash albums. Bought 2 glasses of wine at a reasonable price and sipped in them through the entire gig. Got a tip on YELP that parking was sparse so I bought a spot online for 10 bucks on "reserve a spot". It worked out great; we were in and out without a problem. The SPOT was right around the corner from The Apollo. We ate at a BBQ place nearby after the show. Perfect day!!! read more

Several places to eat in the area, but that's kind of sparse too. The theatre is under an L, but, amazingly, we never heard it while inside. Theatre could use some renovation. With about ten sold out shows per week, they would seem to have the funds. Well worth the trip for a nice night of theatre. read more

I'm pretty new to the Chicago scene, so it was nice exploring the Lincoln Park area (and eating at the newly opened Pei Wei before just 2 miles down the road!!!). We had tickets to see the Million Dollar Quartet, like many reviewers... so we took advantage. Our seats were pretty good- right side of the theater on the end. While I was the second seat in, I had pretty good seats. People 4-5 seats in can only really see the butts of the performers most of the time. The acoustics, awesome. The stage, small and intimate. I was about 8 feet away from the performers the entire time! You can buy drinks at the bar and walk them in during the show. There was no intermission for the 1 hour, 45 minute show, but we were fine. Parking is $10 in their lot (not bad, especially since we had free tix!) and there is a lot of metered parking around, but we didn't want to deal with that. Had we been there earlier, we may have considered saving the buck. The actors came out at the end and we took a photo with one for fun. He was a nice guy-- the Elvis player. I'd go to the theater again... it was nice, quaint, and nearly ever seat in the house is a good one (aside from the far left or far right of the stage since actors usually face forward). read more

Million Dollar Quartet: A night that took place in history is the backdrop for a great fun performance. The play was just over an hour and a half and you would have never known. From the start you are drawn in, the acting and the live music done incredibly well by the actors and actress. You could almost believe that you were there that historic night. You came for the great artists, Presley, Cash, Lewis and Perkins and left learning about the man you truely changed the landscape of music, Sam Phillips. I highly recommend seeing this. It's Showtime at the Apollo! No, this isn't the place where they film the televised talent show; you know where the audience will boo performers off stage if they suck. But every time I hear the name Apollo Theater I can't help, but make the association. No, this is the place where, as Carol J said, you can catch productions like Menopause: The Musical and back in the day Pump Boys and Dinettes. Actually, the first time I was in the Apollo was to see Pump Boys and Dinettes back in my single-digit/pre-teen years. The Apollo is a great place to see a show. Unlike a large theater where you need binoculars to see the stage from the cheap seats, every seat here is good. However, I suggest getting all of your beverages before the show starts so as not to be that annoying person climbing in and out of their seat in the middle of the performance. Got a little confused by the signage and wandered from the right side stairs over to the side door then back to the stairs (LOL, no, we weren't drinking, several others did the same thing). Pleasant person at the will call, ticket taker told us no intermission so Hubby beat it to the bathrooms. He pronounced them clean. In we went to our seats to the left side, not too bad, intimate space, so I wouldn't say there was a really bad seat in the house....except maybe the extreme side ends? It was really cold in there, though, and I kept my parka on. Anyway, the whole thing - exterior and interior - feels a bit shopworn, but not too bad. During the dialogue sections of MDQ, we heard the trains going by enough to merit a quick look at each other to verify, but it wasn't too distracting. So overall the venue felt fine to us, a nice smaller theater, and we would return. This review's a little late - we went back in Nov 2010. read more

Last night was the first time I've been to the Apollo for probably 20 years. Yeah, you read that right. I mean c'mon, just look at the building -- it's 1980 all over again. Once upon a time, the Apollo was home to locally grown shows. Hits from Steppenwolf, the Remains, and other theaters moved to the Apollo for extended runs when their home theater had to mount the next show in their season. Then came "Pump Boys and Dinettes," which ran forever, and turned the Apollo into dinner theater without the dinner. Now the theater is a combination of the best of both, with locally produced shows like "Baby Wants Candy" snuggling up against imports such as "Million Dollar Quartet." The theater is a great place to see a show. It's intimate but cozy, two things you don't always get in Chicago. Since it was built as a showcase house, it's an actual theater, with padded seats and fully functional lighting and sound systems. It's three-quarters seating, and there are fewer than 20 rows, so everyone is pretty close to the action. And the seating is on a fairly steep rake, so everyone has a good view. The rows are very narrow, though, so you may have some bashed kneecaps, or accidentally pop someone in the head. Sorry! On a side note, the men's room in teeny. The door opens directly in front of a urinal, so when I walked in, I felt like I should have bought dinner for the guy who was peeing. Watch your six! read more

I never even really noticed this small theater on this stretch of Lincoln. The concierge at my boyfriend's mom's hotel recommended we see the show "Million Dollar Quartet" because the tickets to "Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles" was too expensive. The concierge was really excited about the show and said that he saw it and loved it. Tickets were only $10 through some discount that he gave us, so that is awesome! We made our way over to the theater and found parking right outside the theater. We paid $2 to park at a meter instead of $10 in their lot. If you're interested, the Apollo Theater parking is a flat $10 and I think you can leave it there to go to dinner after the show (make sure you ask first!). Upon entering the theater, I was really surprised and happy that the place is so small. The lobby is big enough for about 40 people to cram in close and get a drink and wait for the doors to open. I was a bit disappointed that the drinks were kind of expensive ($4 for a bottle of Miller Lite). However, I guess they're cheaper than some of the bars right nearby on Lincoln so I can't complain that much. At least there were drinks and I'm always a fan of a few cocktails before a show. Oh, and did I mention you can take them in to the theater! Yes! The theater itself is very small and intimate. I love it. There is no stage (in the elevated sense of the word) - the actors are on floor level with the first row of patrons. Lovely! The stage area is quite small so the shows here have to make use of a small set. "Million Dollar Quartet" happens to take place in only one room, so it worked out really well. The show was excellent! No seat in the theater was bad (we were all the way in the back and I still felt close) and I think everyone really enjoyed the show. The actors were great actors AND musicians so we kind of felt like we were at a concert, not a musical or a play. It was a really great show - I highly recommend, especially for those who love music! The acoustics were good and, as I mentioned before, there was no terrible seat so everyone in the theater could see and hear everything. There was a lot of space in between rows so no one actually had to get up to let people out of their seats. Nice. The acting & singing was very well done, some highlights were the Ramsey & King Geoffrey torturing song as well as the BackStreetBoys White Walkers theme. That's right I said Apollo theater and it's not amateur night, oh wait that's the New York theater (no relation) (You don't see any clowns here... I know because I would be right out that door running if I saw one). This Apollo theater has a long history dating back to 1978 when it was built. Since then, it has hosted an array of talented performers displaying their talents, in what can only be called legendary plays and musicals. Though the inside has been modernized, the outside still gives that classic old playhouse feel. The staff members are unbelievably nice, they have that glow like they are seeing the play for the very first time as well... it's very rare to see such excitement. I only have one compliant, the seats are not very comfortable (I felt like Edith Ann in that over sized chair on Sesame Street http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9knNVc_27c). But after awhile I really didn't notice it because the show was so entertaining. Myself and a couple others were lucky enough to receive tickets from the Apollo and yelp for the Million Dollar Quartet performance. I had some what of a grasp of the history behind the show but was overwhelming surprised as to how much I really enjoyed the performance. From start to finish it is one ROCKIN' SHOW!!! We were absolutely blow away by how close these performers not only looked like the original musicians but how much they sounded like them too. And after the show I got to shake Elvis's and Mr. Cash's hands... how cool am I!!! I guarantee you will leave singing some of the songs! How have I not written a review on this theater?? Thanks to Yelp I got free tickets to see the Milllion Dollar Quartet. Thanks Yelp! The show was great and the theater was nice. Its a smaller size theater so it was quite intimate. The seats were somewhat comfortable (mine had a huge gap between the seat and the backing) but I had to place a jacket in the gap of my seat to keep from falling into the gap. Nice, small theater, ushers friendly and efficient, bartender gave a generous pour, they had champagne, and we were allowed to bring in the drinks in--bonus!. The show, "Million Dollar Quartet" was 5 stars, fantastic cast and a great show. I had previously seen the "Vagina Monologues" there several years ago and that was a great cast and show as well. I was in the upstairs theater portion of the Apollo to see Million Dollar Quartet recently and I was freeeeeezing. I had to borrow my date's coat to use as a blanket. I wasn't alone either. I was just here tonight. In fact, I am in the cab coming from the show. I saw the Million Dollar Quartet here. I won't review the show here, I'll save that for their page, however the staff here was friendly. Tip for you lovers of alcohol like me, bring cash. It's a cash bar only. The theater is clean and very small. I love an intimate theater. There isn't a bad seat in the house. It is worth every penny for a show here. You feel involved and you can actually see the actors faces. I highly suggest coming here if you are on the fence about seeing something here. read more

A very nice small theater that does the trick! The size and layout works well for the productions they bring in. I also like the small bar you can get some drinks before the show starts. The location isn't so bad either as I was able to find decent street parking nearby and some decent places to drink beforehand. It is definitely nice to see they have some good cheap options for shows which is just right for this cozy little theater. Hopefully I'll be back to see some of them. read more

Last night was my first visit here to the Apollo Theatre to see Baby Wants Candy. The show was excellent but I really liked the theatre itself too. First off they have a bar and they let you bring your drinks in the theatre to enjoy during the show. the bar ahas a good selection for being rather small and our bartender was quick and efficient. The theatre was a good size and the aisles and the seats were big enough for a tall guy like me to sit comfortably. This was a huge bonus for me. The acoustics and the sight lines were all very good also as I noticed no obstructions throughout. I was about 1/2 way up from the stage and i heard everything very clearly. read more
