I have known Denis Newman, who founded Empirical Education, as a research colleague for over 35 years and I know that he has a remarkable understanding of learning theory, educational practices and assessment and that he is incredibly talented in combining these to help educational communities learn through evaluation. Denis Newman has developed an impressive company, with talented people, impressive tools and innovative methods to help schools as make the shift to data-driven decision making. Empirical Education has provided rigorous and independent evidence to help schools, districts and whole states make data informed decisions. They do this by sharing their deep expertise in research, data analysis, engineering, and project management. Their website tells the story of their work with many research reports, projects and resources place them as leaders in the field of evaluation and research. The industry events they sponsor at the American Educational Reseearch Association bring together a remarkable community of prominent and interesting researchers from school systems, the US Department of Education, educational publishers, foundations, univeristies, and leading research organizations and are always enjoyable. All my interactions with Empirical Education have been clear and insightful giving me new ways to approach thorny problems of research. Often people do not understand the cost or process of research and all they want is validation for what they believe is their good practice. They often want an extensive study which will "prove" to all how well they doing and they often think that $20,000 should be enough for this. They are less interested in learning from research, and often have very little understanding of the value of embedding research into their work as a form of learning. I have found it can be very difficult to talk with people who have this conception of research as they are less interested in the process and have a difficult time making sense of how tools, observations, and measurements work together create a reflective, analytic process of learning from data. Given the position and prestige of Empirical Education, I would be surprised if they would have time to devote to a $20K project unless it was the pilot of a larger project. That being said, I can't imagine a team better able to help clients with projects involving school evaluation then Empirical Education. The are one of the leaders in the field and they would be my first choice.

I worked with Guy in a group setting back in 2003; he was leading a transformational course along with several other course leaders. There was a point in the course where I was interacting with the course leaders in front of the group, and I was attempting to uncover the source of the constant dissatisfaction I felt in my life. Although I am generally an open person, I was slightly on the defensive, and was having a hard time opening up. Then Guy said, "Alicia it seems like you feel lonely" Such a simple statement, and the sincerity, the presence, the care he showed as he said that to was enough to just make me melt! And open up! and realize that it is OK that I feel lonely, that I can share that experience with others, and that love in fact exists. My life hasn't been the same since. I love Guy and I fully endorse his work. He supports couples and individuals in being fully who they are, and truly happy. My impression of Alameda is, I hate the town, solely because of this testing site. 1. My computer was slow. I informed the administrators, who restarted the computer, but it was still slow and I politely informed them of no improvement every time I went out for a break. The screen would stall every time I pressed NEXT for 15 seconds. Imagine staring at a blank screen for each passage thinking about how much life sucks. Ample time to calculate how much time I was losing, because I would lose 2-4 seconds on the timer. Multiply that for each time you press next and how many "easy" questions can be answered in that time. I definitely had to seriously consider if I wanted to "go back" to a previous passage, which I did once. If you check answers at the end, better hope they're all on the same passage. On the bright side, it forces you to clear your mind for the next passage. (always have to find the silver lining) 2. The ear muffs don't work, but hey, what can you do. Prometric should allow ear plugs to be used, but maybe they don't think it's sanitary or that people would sue if it got jammed in a test-taker's ear. 3. The door entering the testing site is "light" as in it slams everytime someone goes in or out. Usually out, because the administrator controls the door when they first let people in. I told them about this too but they didn't care. 4. There's no private parking. Just letting you know. You have to pay for garage parking a block away or park on the street, taking notice of street-sweeping days. Not much of an issue for me, but I would consider it if I took the test in the winter months and walking on the streets after a late test. 5. Maybe I'm a test center snob, but there are much nicer places around the Bay. 6. If your test is screwy, you can write a letter to amcas, which will write a letter to you saying you can show their letter to the medical schools you apply to. Peanuts. 7. The good thing about the test center is that there is a yogurt place, peets, starbucks, (jamba? I don't remember), a mexican restaurant, and american food - hot dog place, etc. So it's not like I was cranky going into the exam, just coming out. 8. The staff is friendly enough.

I sat at cubicle #15, and unfortunately, the people working at the center have to walk into the room and walk by that desk in order to press a button every 5 minutes or so. I believe this is done so that there is evidence that the testing room is being monitored. Even though I was wearing earplugs, the sound of the walking and the way the floor vibrated distracted my attention every time they came in. My test was 8 hours long, so you can imagine that after 4 hours or so, a quiet/ non distracting environment helps if you need to keep pounding through the questions. Another distraction was that around 3pm, a girl was seated next to me to take her exam. Her exam must have had lots of written answers, because she typed and typed. She was a loud typer, so not even my ear plugs could entirely drown it out. I am thinking or writing a formal complaint about this, because I do think all of this affected my ability to adequately maintain concentration while I was answering some of the questions... especially as it got down to the last few sections.

In varying ways, each paralegal gave me the same warning: inevitably, at some point, you are going to be taking classes during which you will wonder how the hell certain students got accepted into the program. Unfortunately, this warning panned out, but remember: this is not law school. There is no LSAT or personal interview. Amongst others, a screaming mental incompetent, a borderline illiterate, and a sociopath can sneak in. Be aware but keep -your- focus. Regarding the program director, a former working paralegal, each graduate found the "dual personality" moniker applied. "One day she's totally on your side, the next she's after your head," one graduate summed it up--and shrugged. Be prepared. Before attending a Masters program, I did a walk-through of potential schools. Wish I had done so with SFSU. There is no argument that the Westfield Mall location is sleek, attractive, and convenient (the food court is incredible!). However, I and other students found the incomplete computer lab (no printers) and having to trek out to the main campus to purchase books frustrating and a pain. Speaking of books, another consensus: it is a -total- rip-off when a school text costs $150.00, and after the course is finished, the book cannot be sold back. Finally, most of this paralegal program's instructors are practicing lawyers. During my study, they were energetic and enthusiastic about their subjects and highly informative. The coursework was challenging and occasionally intellectually stimulating. Weekend seminars conducted by both lawyers and working paralegals provided updates in emerging areas of law and supplemented traditional classwork. I do not regret the $10,000 out-of-pocket spent obtaining a paralegal certificate from SFSU, but man, I could use that cash right now....

SFSU paralegal program is a great launch into a second career, or to firm up practical marketable skills lacking from loftier undergraduate pursuits (what was I thinking... political science?) And, this is a worthwhile venue to scope out whether one wishes to endeavor law school. The education I have received from SFSU has translated into 3 raises from my current employer, now that I am a more knowledgeable commodity. The industry contacts I have made through the program with instructors, who are experts in their fields, is invaluable, and the friends I have made throughout my classes are priceless. The SF legal market is very fertile for a lucrative and rewarding career (trust me... I come from the wasteland known as the Midwest.) The paralegal program at SFSU has been a perfect springboard toward my success.
