In less than four months renting from Apex I have encountered the following: 1. My roommate and I smelling a natural gas leak and experiencing physical symptoms (loss of concentration, fatigue) just to be told when a technician arrived days later "oh yeah, there was a minor leak in the basement but it's fixed now" 2. Brian (head of management) calling us poor for renting one of THEIR properties 3. Being told by Megan (manager) that Apex would not refund us when told we should do our laundry at the laundromat because the dryer had broken 4. Having the water turned off (unannounced) while I was taking a shower 5. Being told that a backed-up sink on the verge of overflowing with water does not constitute an emergency 6. Having maintenance workers enter unannounced and unexpectedly for repairs we didn't report The icing on the cake is that Apex staff will act like they are doing YOU a favor, and should you speak out about such issues, they will respond with self-righteous indignation as if you had asked them to buy you a new car. read more

Made an appointment to view a house a week ahead of time. Then called to confirm the morning of. Someone sounding like a teenager called me about an hour before the appointment to say someone had just applied and do I still want to see it? Applications are rejected fairly regularly, so yes I do. Was told he would be fifteen minutes late. No problem. An hour and fifteen minutes later I'm sitting in front of the house to be shown when I get another call from the teen. They never notified the tenant about my appointment despite my having called a week before the appointment and again the morning of. They couldn't get a hold of the tenant so I drove 3 and 1/2 hours round trip for nothing. Asked for an explanation and was simply told he was sorry. Literally the worst company I've ever rented from. Blatantly ignore maintenance requests. My ceiling has leaked on and off since I moved in. There was a BAT in my apartment and they never came to patch the spot where it got in. And now on top of all that, they are showing my apartment in the middle of a pandemic. I have pre existing conditions and I really dont feel safe, but they could care less. Also, their apartments are really overpriced for the quality. I'm in an old building and nothing has been updated. My shower is literally a trickle of water. Avoid Apex at all costs!! read more

I had a great experience renting with Apex! The rent was low relative to comparable places I had looked into renting, so I was a bit skeptical when I first signed my lease. I ended up staying in the same apartment for 3 years and I never had any major issues. Maintenance requests were addressed within a few days, sometimes even same day. Definitely consider renting from Apex if you're on a budget and especially if you don't mind living in an older building with more character than all the new "luxury" high rises! read more

This is the worst property management I have EVER had and I've lived in apartments for about 10 years. They do not care about you or your well being or your families. Almost every single one of their properties have roaches which you can see on all other reviews which before I moved in I NEVER believed, I was young and nieve. I have reported to management and they sent a company with a man who constantly said he could be my money daddy and fix the bugs for no cost, I was ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIED AND INSTALLED CAMERAS IN MY HOME INSTANTLY WHICH MANAGEMENT DID NOTHING ABOUT THEY BLAMED ON ME. I have had break ins into my mail that management HAS NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT OR NEVER gotten a response from the property manger at 2110 Galway bay. The property managers name is Brian Bosben who does not respond to emails and makes the employees respond for him. They have no cameras in halls which if you mail goes missing, it's on you and you have to pay for it. I'm a women and have a right to feel safe which is shut down by the management company. I will be moving this summer and hope to never see another person apply here again. The halls have roaches as well as mice hence why there is poison control and animal control here EVERY WEEK. I wanted to give them a two or three-star review, since their rents are so good. But, there's a reason you're not paying more. It's the same reason that everyone you know who've rented through Apex has some bone to pick with them. My first year living in Madison (2013), I was able to find a studio downtown at 529 North Pinckney for under 600, and that included everything other than internet. Not bad at all! The building was an older, shabbier apartment house in the Mansion Hill neighborhood, with stained glass windows in the stairwells. It was by Lake Mendota and seemed to be as good a deal as I could find. That was before our furnace broke down and they took 3 days to restore heat.... in February 2014, during the second polar vortex. It was before bats drove me out of my apartment in the middle of the night *5 NIGHTS IN ONE WEEK* without them doing anything! That's right - it took 5 CALLS to Apex during business hours, on 5 SEPARATE OCCASIONS, to convince them that bats were a real problem - in fact, the first time I told them bats were getting in, the receptionist told me that "bats are actually good because they eat mosquitoes." I'm all for bats, and agree that they're very important to the environment. But... no, they're wild animals that carry rabies and poop poison, and have no place in my apartment. The kicker: a friend of mine, living in an Apex apartment house on Spaight Street, was having a recurring bat problem at the same exact time. We ended up crashing in the same coworker's living room on different nights that week. Thanks for the bonding Apex! The windows in my apartment were awning windows with no insulation, too big for window plastic. So I had to tape tarps over them - so much for the winter lake view. Everyone in this building had complaints to lodge, about bats, mice, maintenance/upkeep, shady bookkeeping practices, illegal entry by management/maintenance. They daisychain thermostats together to cut HVAC costs, which means that you will likely have no control over the heating in your apartment. To their credit, Apex provided (small/mediocre) space heaters when our furnace blew in February..... the reason I say "to their credit" is that their leasing process makes you waive the Wisconsin renter's right to guaranteed heat, so they weren't legally obligated to.) I guess there's a nice soul at their office who took pity on us. If that's who's reading this, sorry for ripping on your company so bad... but I hope you've moved on to the better employment that you deserve. Caveat emptor! read more

I've read almost nothing but terrible reviews for this company, but they are more affordable than most places in the area I want to live, so I rented from them. Honestly, they aren't a terrible company. They have been very prompt in responding to maintenance requests (I make sure to pair a less-important one with more urgent matters to make sure it gets done). They were very good about calling and giving 24 hours notice before coming in. My apartment is in an older converted house, and has definitely seen better days but has a good amount of space. I don't care about the drafty windows because heat and electric is included, so I just crank up the space heater, but I'd probably be more annoyed if I was responsible for electricity. The office is very disorganized. I've only spoken to my building manager once on the phone, the other times my call goes straight to voicemail. It took me three months to figure out that electric was included in the apartment because it didn't specify that on my lease. Basically, if you keep after them, you will get your questions answered, but don't expect them to get it right the first time. If you are a responsible and observant tenant, you won't have a problem. read more

My experience with Apex has been dismal. When we first went in to sign the sublet, many of the details of the lease were wrong. For example, the rental address was incorrect, the "strike one" option on the lease (where you have to choose one or another option like pets are/aren't allowed) had not been struck, so we had to do it, the pet rent was incorrect. We were also charged $30 for pet rent because the previous lease holders had a dog. We had a cat. We asked if it should be lower for a cat and were told "it doesn't matter, if we lower pet rent we'll just raise regular rent". This implied that pet rent was included in the rent total we were shown. We'll get to that later. There was a clear lack of attention to detail on the lease. On that day, we also filled out a paper specifying that the MGE bill should be assigned under my spouse's name. Apex assured us that they would handle the switch-over. 1.5 month in I get a threatening letter from Apex saying that they have put the utilities into my name (not my spouse's), I owe them for the utilities that they had to pay for that month and a half, and a threat of fines if any more utilities were charged to them. As if I was the one who forgot to switch them over. Over the course of the rental, I called on at least four occasions to get our property added to online rent payment. Each time I was told either "they didn't know how" or that the guy in charge did it once a month and it would be up next month. It was never added. Fast-forward to leaving 8 months later... We got our security deposit back -$200. I asked why, and Apex said it was due to unpaid utilities on the account, which had been accruing. I was never notified of these, they just silently built up in my account. Now, Apex claims they are for the water/sewer bill. But I had been diligently adding $35 a month onto my rent to cover that. Now they are claiming that the pet fee wasn't included in the original rent (despite implying it earlier by saying they'd raise rent to compensate for lower pet rent), so either way they owe us nothing. There was also a $70 cleaning fee. They were unable to produce receipts for the cleaning. I did get an invoice, but that is not the same since it was generated by Apex, not the people providing the service (assuming they outsource their cleaning). This does not even go into detail about the non-returned calls and the demeaning, sarcastic, and angry emails. Watch the details with this one. read more

If you're on here wondering whether to rent from Apex or not, I will make it very simple for you: DO NOT RENT FROM APEX. They are terrible at communication. It takes a few months to get in contact with them regarding ANY issue. We asked for information on security deposit turnover since two of us are leaving and one is staying. We didn't receive any information for the first 8 months of living in this apartment and right around May we receive emails threatening us with eviction due to the security deposit not being paid properly. Every other rental company I've rented from in Madison has been great at communicating and helpful when we needed attention. Save yourself several headaches and rent from someone else. Well-known for renting out s*** holes. The unit I rented from them was a Co-op or dorm style. Frayed wires sticking out everywhere, broken cabinets and bathroom fixtures. It was absolutely disgusting, and almost unlivable. If you have some free time, check out their rental on E Mifflin, and you'll see what a joke it really is. Yes they are cheap, but don't be surprised if your carpet smells like cat pee, your ceiling leaks when it rains, or you find a couple bugs living under your bed. This is why Apex Properties should be avoided at all costs!! I moved out early because they allowed the basement to rot and mold. Instead of renting the place within a reasonable amount of time, they chose to renovate, including new flooring and additions. Like the previous reviewer, I moved in and had to spend a week cleaning, there were tampons in the bathroom and food and mold in the fridge, the previous tenants had left me the housekey on the countertop. I never got a check in form, but when i moved out, my family came and cleaned the place, we even washed the walls. I only used nail holes that were already there from the previous tenants, who had lived there for about 6 years prior. I personally lived there for 7 years and only called maintenance when absolutely necessary, regardless they always acted like I was insane. The best example was when the water pipe in the kitchen burst and ws spewing gallons of water onto the floor. When I tried to fix it, there was no way, turning off the water main did not work... I called the emergency maintenance number, I had to call several times. Finally when i was enough of a pain, i got a call back. "Hey this is Labor day weekend, you will have to wait till Tuesday...." It was Friday night. I am pretty sure I bitched and got service on sunday, but I was hated from that point forth. How DARE I demand that there not be a man-made lake in the center of my sway-back kitchen floor!!??? I MUST be crazy. The maintenance management are bullies, their attitude sucks. Anyway, when I did move out, I broke the lease and was told that a new tenant would be found. A gentleman's agreement if you will. However after all upgrades were complete I was served with legal papers demanding that I pay the remaining rent, approx $6,000.00 and then they demanded I was responsible to pay for new hardwood floors and the addition of an outdoor porch and other general upgrades. Basically their legal team saw a window of opportunity to write a blank check for renovations!!!!!! I was simply too weak from the mold infused basement to fight. I hired a lawyer and negotiated them to a reasonable amount. They originally sued me for about 12 thousand dollars (I forked over approx 3 thousand dollars just to make them go away.) I would have won the case, (remember, no check-in form?) but I had no energy to fight and was happy to escape that rotted hot mess with my life. So we settled and did not go to court. The truly sad part of this review is that the Apex corp is owned by two brothers. Brian Bosben is a gentle hero of a man who has my utter respect and admiration. His brother Bruce on the other hand is a bulldozer, with undertones of misogyny. Bruce demands satisfaction, he overrides his brothers wishes regularly and runs the corporation the same way George W. ran this country. This business started when their father began building properties for his families future, when he passed, he entrusted his sons. I wonder if he knew the Cain and Able dichotomy that would become their business model. The BOTTOM LINE? Madison property management companies suck, so this one thinks it can follow suit. 1/2 the company is golden, and the other 1/2 is rotted. 1) 2 stars just because finallly replaced the 1960s fridge that had to be repaired every month and flooded the apt ... 2) one 1980'ish washer and dryer for aprox 10 or more units... breaks every week.. mostly just do to the lazyness of not emptying the change out of the washer change holder.. clothes were soaking wet one instince cuz washer was broke and i was told no one would come till 4 days later and that i should bag it up and go to a laundromat ( zero degrees out side) .. The absolute laziest management company besides Steve Brown. We own properties in front of one of their buildings and their tenants constantly put their trash in ours, literally overflowing our trash cans. When you call the office you get absolutely nowhere as the actual managers are always "busy" or doing "walk-throughs" and the messages that the ditz receptionist takes for you never actually get to the managers, and if they do the managers don't actually do anything with them. I have worked for two different property management companies. One in Chicago and one in Madison. These guys are awful at every aspect of the job. Our apartment was not cleaned well at all. They did a quick and careless turnover. They painted the walls and that is it. Floors were in poor condition, hundreds of spiders and webs all over the porch, webs and dust in the laundry area. Caked dusted on fans. Cat urine smell everywhere. They had zero communication about work orders. We never knew if they were going to fix something or if they had. Maintenance never leaves a note to say "we fixed __" or "we'll need to come back" or anything, which is what I've done with both of the other companies I worked for. Lived in 50 degree apartment most of the winter. They didn't respond to clogged pipes for days until we sent a few requests in and my wife got hung up on and told "yeah, we know." click. (and she's the sweetest person you would ever meet) They sent us a $110 bill for a lock-out that we never even had. It took them 4 days to respond about it. After we moved out and got our security deposit and the owner dropped them from being their property manager they still took rent from us. I've gone in and asked about it and no one seems to know or care. I've emailed them a few times with no response. I already have this super bad impression of this management without even signing a lease. Bad consumer service! First time I called the manager I wanted to learn about their properties around E Johnson St, the manager seemed to lack the knowledge of their properties, or at least he didn't care. Saying "there are too many of their properties in their area and he wouldn't know", he asked me to check online. His tone was irritated (later as I thought about this, that was also rude) and making me feel bad that I didn't do enough research and kept bothering him. Surely I did my research but I just wanted to have his recommendation as well, but appearently he didn't want to help me with it. That was ok, I guess, so I scheduled apartment showing with him after the online research. However, the worst thing happened. I scheduled an apartment showing at 11:30 am but the manager called me to reschedule at 11 am. It was a little tight to me but I was ok with it. However, when I was trying to get there a little bit after 11, the manager called me again saying there wasn't enough time to show me the apartment because he scheduled another showing at 11:30! I told him that I was already on my way and there should be less than 5 minutes to get there, but he said no no. Then I called the office but the lady in the front desk explained it to me that "they were very busy" and had several different apointments in a day. When I said I wanted to talk to somebody else to complain, she said "he is in a meeting". I'm not sure if this is a nice way to respond to a consumer's complaint, but given that they scheduled back-to-back appointments, changing consumer's time schedule as their will, and refusing to wait for 10 to 15 minutes, I already know this is a poor business and I doubt if I am going to consider renting their place. read more

I rented from Apex during my first two years living in Madison. For a spacious downtown apartment, the price was relatively cheap. The apartment was well-kept. Maintenance was prompt and professional. The office staff were friendly. I honestly didn't encounter any serious problems renting with Apex. I got almost my entire security deposit back, except that they charged me for two hours of cleaning. I think you can do a lot worse in Madison renting from a large property management company. I've had a wonderful experience looking for housing through Apex. Shout out to Scott, who is so personable and polite and who truly cares about people. He is not just interested in making you sign with them, he really wants to help you find what you need. Scott showed me a total of eight units during which he openly discussed the pros and cons of each unit, and always gave me a heartfelt answer no matter how many questions I asked (I asked A LOT of questions). I could tell that he has pride in his work and he truly loves his city, Madison. He knows the city extremely well and will give you many useful tips and information purely out of good will. I decided to go with a much more expensive and unattractive short-term lease at the last minute due to my personal circumstances, but otherwise I would have definitely signed with Apex--they have many units in great locations that are priced well and have character and charm. Plus, it's a huge draw that you can actually have a pleasant experience dealing with a property management. I recommend Apex and especially Scott to anyone who cares about the quality of personal interaction beyond cut-and-dried business transaction. read more

The property manager created an MG&E account in my name without my knowledge after I moved out that extended past my lease. When I was surprised with a bill 4 months after moving out he claimed it was not his responsibility and rejected the charge even for the dates after my lease had ended. read more

I have never had a worse experience with a Property Management Company. Horrible communication and seems like they tell the people they hire to just suck at their job and not communicate or actually listen to the people living in their housing. Our apartment had multiple things wrong with it - holes in the wall, in dire need of re-painting, windows leaking when it rained, an entire room in the top floor filled with pink fluff insulation; now don't get me wrong the apartment was a very nice size and decently priced but we needed the aforementioned problems to be fixed. After multiple email conversations with our property manager saying she would send out maintenance and that we were on the "painting list" and nothing being done for months, I finally emailed her warning that if nothing would be done I would call a building inspector as I was moving out and I didn't want the new tenant to have to deal with the problems. Wouldn't you know the next day she responded and maintenance fixed everything within the next week. As if that wasn't enough, after my move out (my roommates still lived at the place, I just moved out into a different apartment) I was promised my security deposit 21 days after my move out. I also paid for a full months rent the month I moved out (I moved out the 15th, other tenant paid the last half of the months rent) so I was also to be reimbursed half of that months rent with my security deposit. 21 days roll around and I get nothing. I decide to email our property manager and ask about it. After a slew of email messages with her asking me if I paid for a full months rent and showing her the emails where that's what she told me to do, she emailed me what the amount of the check would be and said it would be to me by Saturday. Nothing came Saturday, or Monday or Tuesday. I decided to email again asking whether or not she had the correct address and confirmed she did, but that she had to redo the report since the first check only had the security deposit and not half of the months rent. Fine, whatever, as long as the check comes by the next day since I needed the money and she said it would have came 3 days prior. Next two days and nothing. Now I send her another email (this is currently happening today) saying that I haven't received it - she responds saying that Accounting must have misunderstood her and originally sent the check for only the half of months rent. She apologetically goes on to say that the next check will have both the security deposit & half months rent on it. At this point I am just like WTF. How many times can you screw this up, it's numbers/money, and you have emails in front of your face (and I'm assuming there should be ledgers and reports of this stuff?) So I respond again, being not the nicest person and saying it's ridiculous how many problems this has caused when it's such a simple thing. I offer to drive to Apex to pick up the check (on my time and my gas money) since I cannot wait for it to arrive in the mail. I also offer to speak to Accounting and sort this all out because she can't seem to. She responds being very curt, and says "Your checks will be at the front desk. We close at 5:30." Finally we have gotten this all figured out, but I'm sitting here praying to the gods that there are actually checks waiting for me there. Also, one of my roommates that still lives there said that his last roommate had to wait 6 months for his security deposit. We just moved into an Apex apartment this fall, and we are happy so far. The property has been well maintained, and the price seems reasonable compared to similar properties in the neighborhood. The company has been easy to work with, and they have been awesome about responding to our maintenance requests. Seriously. Our toilet was malfunctioning, so after attempting to fix it once, they brought us a new one. We didn't like the armoire the space came with in the entryway, so they sent a team over to remove it the next day. It's just been so easy to deal with them! read more

Place was filthy when I moved in. Even had to change the toilet seat because it was rotting. The building wasn't even secure. Back door was left open on a regular basis. Maintenance did nothing about it even though I called. I cleaned the whole place from top to bottom when I moved out. They charged me for 3 hours of cleaning. It was a 300Sq Foot apartment and I think of myself as a clean freak and it wouldn't even take me 3 hours to clean it. When I called to complain and brought up all the previous points, they told me "that doesn't matter". Nice customer service. There are better private rentals that you can go with. I lived in an Apex-managed apartment for the past two years. My apartment was fairly nice for the price. BUT Apex was pretty bad at managing the property. They ignored maintenance requests and it took serious persistence to get my security deposit back. No hot water: Basically, the hot water in my building sometimes worked, and sometimes didn't. Despite my neighbors having the same problem, and lots of calls to Apex, they insisted that the water heater worked and we were all showering at once. Not true. I had two years of cold showers. Security deposit issues: A month after moving out, I still hadn't received my security deposit. I contacted Apex, and they said they'd send it, but two weeks later I still hadn't received my deposit. I asked them again, and they said the check must have gotten lost and they'd re-send. I finally got a check from them, but it was for less than I was owed. I asked them about that and they said they'd made a mistake and would send the correct amount. Two weeks later, I still hadn't received a check for the difference. I contacted them and they said the check had been forgotten under a pile of papers. I recently got the final check, but it was missing the interest that is legally owed on a security deposit. After the heating problem my heat was disconnected for a weekend, kitchen torn out without my permission or reduction in rent and intimidation tactics from this rental company all over heating disputes in March/April months. I had people constantly in and out of my studio nothing was getting done with the heat and there was no plan as to what they were doing with my kitchen. Sorry I refuse to pay 300/mo for heat on top of rent and have it be 53 degrees and be treated like a second class citizen. I had emailed the owners for permission to sublet and they decided they simply would not respond to me. I ended up getting a lawyer and was glad just to get permission to get someone to sublet my place out which thankfully I was able to find someone to sublet. Where to start...I am currently renting from this company and I never thought it would be that bad. I rented a spacious and old apartment that at the beginning looked fit to live in. I was never told that they were planning on remodeling the apartment right above me which is very dishonest. They started on September 2017 and today February 8/2018 they continue making my life miserable every day for more than 8 hours a day. I have told the management that I have a medical condition that makes me unfit to leave home. They did not care and they have not done anything to improve or speed the remodel that according to them is going to last until April so 8 months of torture, paying the same rent price for an apartment that is not fit to live in. I would have left, but as a sick person I do not have the energy to do it. They keep changing the construction workers, every time for less professional and noisy people. Also I would like to highlight how rude and unprofessional they are when you contact them. They are specialist in making you feel the worst, and never solve anything. Last time I contacted them to ask them to talk to the construction workers to not play their really loud music that I can hear from my apartment, she replied "they are allowed to play music during working hours", so according to her logic and I am talking about the manager, the construction workers have more right than me that I am paying them timely month to month?. She also dared to tell me that "I was more than welcome to leave". Come on! I have been going thru so many really bad situations with this company, from a piece of roof falling almost over us, water flooding on Thanksgiving which pretty much ruined our holiday; fire alarms thrown beeping in the construction dumpster for the whole weekend (that have happened three times), a toilet not well attached that can pretty much fall into the basement, and I could continue mentioning more. From the bottom of my heart if you are reading this I would advise you TO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY. THERE ARE MORE MINDFUL COMPANIES IN THE MARKET, WILLING TO HELP AND MAKE THEIR TENANTS FEEL VALUED. read more

Laundry machines never worked, they tried to bill me for a broken window that wasn't a part of my apartment- even though I was out of the country when it happened... I tried to rent an apartment from Apex. I wanted a unit in my friends' building and had viewed several units in the building before so was ready to sign a lease. They insisted I view the unit I was renting (reasonable) the next day. I just had surgery and can't drive so even walking 3 blocks to view it was a big deal. I asked the guy showing it (Brian) if the application could be done online since I just had surgery and can't travel easily. He said yes but make sure to get the earnest money paid because if there was any question about 2 applications the time that was paid would give priority. Since their form isn't a fillable pdf and I was at home recovering, I paid the earnest money online and waited to submit the application until I could scan it when I had a ride to work the next day. I submitted it and they called to tell me someone else put one in 1 hr before. I explained I had paid the money the night before and was told that was what determined priority. They said both the application and money had to be paid at the same time. They didn't apologize for the miscommunication or in anyway indicate sympathy or understanding for my situation- even when I started crying because I just had surgery and it's very difficult for me to view apts. They just kept repeating their policy - as if it wasn't clear that I didn't know what it was under the circumstances. Even if they had to stick to the policy, they could have offered to take a bit of money off another apartment or at the very least offered understanding and a genuine apology. read more

I would have never rented from Apex because their reputation in town is well known, but the property I live in was taken over by them mid-lease. Requests for maintenance are treated as a nuisance by office staff--I was told to look for another place to live because I asked them to send someone over to take out all the trash left by previous tenants. Everytime they come out to fix the coin operated washing machines, they raise the price to operate. Office staff is rude at best. Assuming you can ever get one to call you back. read more

If I could rate this lower than one star I would give them negative ratings. Originally, my roommate and I were amazed at how nice the place was, how affordable the rent was etc., BUT very soon into our lease agreement we experienced one of the worst things possible and have watched it handled HORRIBLY by their staff. After a repair request was made to fix a very clogged tub, a maintenance man was sent to our apt. We have two cats living here and the repair man left in the middle of his job (while neither my roommate or I were home) and left an exposed access panel open which BOTH cats crawled in to. I returned home around 6:30 PM and realized both cats were missing, luckily I was able to lure one out with food but it has been 3 days and the other cat is still no where to be found/heard/smelled. While yes we believe none of this was done maliciously, we DO believe Apex has continued to lie and withhold information as to who was in our apt and when. The fact that it has been 3 days with no sign of the other cat has led us to believe he may no longer be responsive, and the absolute lack of proactivity by Apex is enough to make you want to scream. The worst part, besides the lying and loss of my buddy Dobis, is the absolutely horrible receptionist Matt. He is quite literally a piece of shit who hung up on me, and has the nerve to tell me I don't care about my lost animal but more so about getting someone in trouble over this. All I want is my freaking pet back. At this point I would give them a million stars if they just stopped being dickheads and admitted they are at fault and tirelessly search until they find what they allowed to become lost. These people are awesome!! .. super down to earth, easy to talk to and extremely helpful and reliable. I have rented from them for years and any time I have needed maintenance to come fix something i put in a request and they are usually there within the hour pending how many other calls they get, but seriously i have never had a problem. If you are a reliable tenant they will go out of their way to find you whatever fits your needs and your budget... several times I have had serious demands (i cant help it i'm picky) for places i was looking to live in and they have spent the time to find me something that suited my needs. I had left madison for several years and they were the first people i called when i knew i was moving back and they immediately found me a few options for housing even in March when it's hard to find anything. The only thing to keep in mind is that several of these places are 100 plus years old... so if you see something needs to be replaced just let them know and they will get at it asap. They have great locations, and also have houses with only a few units (which is what i personally prefer) and their prices are very reasonable for those locations. I have taken care of my places and always gotten my security deposit back from them. they will do what it takes to make it work for you. cant say enough how on countless occasions they have made my apartment searching less stressful and i have loved every apartment i've had with them. all i can tell you is... check em out. read more

I've lived with apex for two years now and just resigned for another ONLY because I love my apartment. You would think they would treat someone who is giving them business with kindness but of the contrary. Since day one Jody, the maintenance lady has been nothing but rude. I try to "kill her with kindness" but it doesn't matter she always cuts me off and has a shitty attitude. I would NEVER recommend this property management to anyone. It's a bummer that one lady can ruin the whole company for you. But it is nice that every other person who lives in an apex apartment hates her too, so we can all bitch about her together. Then again she also teaches me a valuable lesson, as someone who works in customer service I will never treat someone with such disrespect ever. read more

If it was possible to give a negative amount of stars I would. My roommates and I had been interested in one of their properties for weeks. We toured the apartment, submitted the applications, and paid the earnest money within 3 days. Throughout this process we had been asking if there were any other applications in on this property and every time we were told no. They were confident we would be great renters so we should get approved soon. A week later we received an emailing informing us that there was in fact other applications in on this property and because they had plied first we would no longer be considered for the property. The lack of disregard and utter lack of communication with this company is appalling. I advise not to rent with them, but if you do I would make damn sure they are not hiding another applications or renters because they are terribly misinformed. There have been a myriad of issues. We had bare wiring, no hot water for 3 days, no gas, and mold all at once. Most recently, we discovered that the shared basement is not only constantly dripping and covered in pools of water, with broken laundry machines, but that the water leak is clearly linked to the sewage pipes. These are not reasonable living conditions. They are clearly understaffed and manage well below the bare minimum for expected maintenance. But beyond that, they do not even maintain standard codes for housing. This is unacceptable. read more

Once again I echo what has been stated by previous yelpers. I am sure they are a fine company to deal with if you don't have a problem signing the lease and keeping your mouth shut for a year. Our apartment did not have a lock on the front shared hall way door. I asked our upstairs neighbors to lock it and they refused. Apex refused to fix it. So we called the city inspector. Here were his findings-- COMPLAINT INSPECTION NOTE: ENCLOSED ARE 2 SEPARATE NOTICES WITH 2 DIFFERENT DUE DATES. SHORTER TERM NOTICE COMMON STAIR WAYS 1. 27.05(2)(h)10* Install a positive locking guarded latch lock (commonly referred to as a storeroom lock) on the front common entrance door to the building. 2. 27.04(2)(d)* 27.05(2)(h) Secure the loose door knob on the front common entry door. 3. 27.05(2)(h)5* Install a vent lock on front entryway window(s). 4. 27.05(2)(h)10* Install a positive locking guarded latch lock (commonly referred to as a storeroom lock) on the right side common entrance door to the building. 5. 27.05(2)(h)10* Install a self closer on the right side common entry door to the building. The closer must be capable of closing and latching the door. A screen door spring or weight type closers will not be accepted. APARTMENT 1 6. SPS 362.1200 Install the missing carbon monoxide alarm in the apartment. Wisconsin Statutes now require the installation of Carbon Monoxide Detectors in existing buildings with 3 or more dwelling or sleeping units and with a fuel burning appliance. This company is horrible! They are extremely rude and not prompt about responding to issues. Their maintenance staff is very sloppy. I rent a full house and they cleaned our gutters with a leaf blower! Ridiculous- they left our freshly mowed yard a complete mess and our back porch was covered with dirt. A ball bearing came loose in the garbage disposal and they tried telling me it was a bb- we do not and have never owned a bb gun- what an idiot...they also sent me a bill for that. Then, our refrigerator broke and after 4, yes 4 calls, all they could tell us was that they would call back to schedule something, even though all of our food was spoiling. If I didn't love the house I've been renting for 4 years, I would run from these people! read more

My husband and I subleased an apartment from Apex for 3 months and had no issues! The building we were in was not sound proofed very well, but we had fairly quiet neighbors. It really depends on the building you rent from. The representatives we worked with were always pleasant and helpful. We also got our entire security deposit back, which was great!
