This is the main 'formal' park in Burnham on Sea. It's where my Mum used to take my brother and me…read moreas toddlers. (We have the ancient-looking black and white photographs to prove it!). The gardens and the whitewashed Manor House were sold to the then local council in 1904 and opened to the public a year later. They have been maintained as formal gardens ever since, with areas of lawn and formally planted beds, surrounded by trees, and a traditional stone wall at the rear. The bandstand in the middle was rebuilt in 1995 as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of VE day. The Manor House was used by the Council as an office, but was sold in 2000 to a charitable trust. Adjacent to the gardens is the oddly-named Crosses Pen, added in 1943 to provide tennis courts, which are still there. AT one time there was a popular putting green here, but it is now a green open space with informal lawns and scattered trees. To the east of the gardens is Burnham's Bowling Green. The gardens are occasionally the venue for events such as jazz festivals, and can be hired.

This tarmac expanse is often used for military parades, concerts and funfairs. Notable landmarks are the War Memorials, Sir Francis Drake statute and Smeaton's Tower Lighthouse, which is open to the public, and has it's own twitter account @smeatonstower

There's a beautiful lake with waterfowl, car park, a nice pub, lots of green parkland in all directions, plus good paths for walkers and cyclists. Just a short stroll over the hill there are marvellous views for miles along the estuary. One of our favourite places to visit in the area.

It takes a sharp climb either on a path or some steps depending on where you go up. There is an environmental centre here which hosts school camps and wilderness days for local school children so you may suddenly encounter large groups of small people on the paths. The whole area is just beautiful for dog walking - lots of space and not many other people walking here. You can sometimes walk for an hour or so and not come across anyone else.

We were made to feel very welcome when we went, with some zany staff making a good job of entertaining our two children. There's a Butterfly Zoo next door (qv) but we preferred the Maze -- a very good morning out.

Nine holes is always too small for me, and eighteen too much for children, so this twelve-hole course is great for families, and there are small clubs for infants. There are some crazy-golf novelties like the spiral, but the theming is more restrained than most. The design is original, with a Roman theme a bit like Pompeii and one particular feature which makes everyone smile (I won't tell you what!). The countryside around is lovely. The playing surface is artificial turf and I have seen wheelchairs on it. It's quite cheap, and half-price for extra rounds or if you visit the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo or the aMazing Hedge Puzzle, which are both next door to it. Parking is free, which makes a change.

It has wonderful views from the top across the lower Ely valley towards Llandough, as well as some amazing mature trees. It is one of the city's oldest parks, given to the city by Charles Thompson in 1911. Perfect for a short walk or a lazy summer afternoon picnic.

Most others offer wide stretches of grass, the odd flowered border and playgrounds. Thompson's Park is smaller than most, and has a particularly quaint feeling. This park is landscaped well, and combined areas of woodland in the heart of the city, with fountains (including the famous Peter Pan statue), duck ponds, winding stairs and a wide grassy area on its higher level. On this field I took part in many school sports days in my time. Never won anything though. Thompson's Park is small and compact, but large enough to take you away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It's like a lost garden in a city wilderness.
