Ynysangharad War Memorial Park - Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, Pontypridd

Ynysangharad War Memorial Park

Ynysangharad War Memorial Park. Now try saying that when you're sober! This park is an excellent…read moreplace to visit and enjoy the many activities they have to offer. You can bring the family down and enjoy the park area with a giant swimming pool and play area for the children. Or you could play tennis on the number of outdoor courts they have. Or you could do what I like to do; play on the pitch and putt golf course they have. I remember when I first visited the park and I was surprised by the size of it. It is a huge mass of land that holds all sorts of fun. I have to talk about the pitch and putt golf course. When I used to think of the word 'Golf' I thought of men in silly looking trousers walking for miles to find a little white speck on the floor. Then I actually played on the course and it was fun. You don't have to know how to play golf because the courses aren't even that long. All you have to do is pay £3.50 for two clubs and a ball (that price also includes a £1 deposit) and if you're a student it costs a lot less. This was a great way to spend a day rather than sitting indoors playing pretend golf on the Nintendo Wii. If you are stuck what to do for a day then visit Ynysangharad War Memorial Park because all will have a fun day!

I loved coming here today. What a beautiful little park just across the bridge over the River Taff…read morefrom the town centre. There are delightful paths to follow bordered by lovely old trees. Lots of grassy areas, raised flower beds which are well kept and full of spring flowers. There is a play area for children with swings and climbing frames, tennis courts, and plenty of benches where you can sit. You can't escape the sound of traffic in the distance but it's still a great park.

Parc Cefn Onn

Parc Cefn Onn is out on the Northern fringes of Cardiff and isn't really a park, its more like a…read morewoodland area really. Its noted among plant lovers for the Rhododendron displays in the spring and its got lots of streams and ponds so quite good for wildlife. To be honest though there's not really much to see or do and its currently infected with Sudden Oak Death which is making it look a big dull. Its ok but really not worth a trip out of your way to get there.

This is a great set of woods to explore and get lost in. It's frequented by a lot of dogs (in…read moregeneral it's not on their own but with their owners) and families. There are various paths that lead off in different directions, but if you've entered at the main gated entrance on Cherry Orchard Road off the roundabout and keep walking you will most likely end up at the big field at the top by the golf course. Along the way you will pass a few ponds and streams which generally have a charming layer of algae on their surface. As well as this there are the legendary parts of the wood owned by the giant: these being the giant's house, the giant's chair (which is much larger than his house), and the enchantingly named, giant's toilet. These legends may or may not have been made up by my parents when I was growing up, as well as the possible myth that 'all the paths in Cefn-Onn lead back to one another', a frequent proclamation of theirs that I am certain was a ploy to lose my sisters and I for a couple of hours of peace.

Llanishen Skatepark

This is a reasonably new addition in terms of skating facilities in Cardiff. It is a free site that…read moreanyone can use. It is really popular and it tends to be occupied a lot of the time, come rain or shine. It's located on the field right in front of Llanishen Leisure Centre and clearly visible from the main road going past. I think this was a decision by the council to allow it to be a safe environment for people to skate or ride a BMX in clear view of passers-by. Local kids that are skating enthusiasts or trying their hand at it for the first time find it a great place to while away a Saturday afternoon and fall over as they try their latest trick. It isn't monitored or watched over by anyone so if you're worried about accidents then it may not be the place for you, but a broken arm here or there is all part of growing up, isn't it?

I've walked and driven past this outdoor skate park near Llanishen Leisure Centre so many times,…read moreand it is now considered the best skate park in Cardiff amongst both BMXers and skaters. It has some good ramps and a decent layout - and what's more, it's free to use. You'll spot plenty of regulars who ride and skate there all the time, so it has a friendly sort of atmosphere - but also has a reputation for being no trouble, and welcoming to newcomers. It's the only skate park in Cardiff with a wall ride (4 foot), plus there's a 5 foot jumpbox, 8 foot high and 16 foot wide halfpipe and flatbank, a 6 foot death box, a 5 foot spine, a 6 foot quarter, a 5 foot quarter, a 4 foot bank and a Kinky kinked rail, plus more. Because this is a community facility, is outdoors and is free to use, it's also open 24/7, which is a bonus. The Leisure centre is situated just few metres away if you want to grab some food or drink - or need some first aid!
