There is a sense of community at the club, it being run by locals that put a lot of time into it. It was only a few years ago that a brand new two-story club house was installed with shower and toilet facilities, a kitchen, and a TV should the unpredictable Welsh weather catch you off guard. It is a members-only club, and membership fees are varied depending on your intended involvement with the club, but all details can be found on their website. They offer coaching for kids and adults should you feel the need to brush up on your play, and they encourage participation in competitions with other tennis clubs around the area. It's a place to go and have a casual game with another friend or three, or there are certain evenings when going alone will not mean hitting the ball against a wall for two hours, as certain nights encourage particular groups to arrive. Tuesday night is Ladies' night, Wednesday night is Men's night, and Thursday is mixed. Depending on what you want out of the club you can pick your time of arrival. Though, it is general etiquette that two guys playing on a Tuesday should vacate the court if enough Ladies show up, as it is their priority. Who said chivalry's dead? Once you're a member, the opening hours of this establishment are really up to you as you get your own key to the place, but it tends to be accepted that it closes at around 10pm. An unwritten rule is: 'If there is danger of hitting a low-flying bat with a ball, it might be time to go home.'

The Vale Health and Racquets Club is a health club found on the Vale Hotel resort…read more With a state of the art gymnasium, a fitness studio and an indoor pool, the club offers some great services to its members. In addition to these, the club also boasts squash and tennis courts as well as a range of spa facilities, including a sauna, steam room and a whirlpool. The amount of equipment in the gym is impressive to say the least, with 80 cardio and resistance machines, along with numerous machine weights too. There is also a free weights area with various weights equipment such as dumbbells, barbells, cables and benches. The gym itself is fully equipped with several TV screens, allowing members to watch TV or listen to music while they work out. There is also a state of the art technokey system used with most of the machines allowing you to have a personalised workout with your routines and workouts recorded on the key unique to the individual. All in all, this is a very good quality gym that caters for all levels of fitness and experience, whether you're a seasoned veteran hoping to push towards making some extra gains or a complete beginner looking to lose a few unwanted pounds.

Easily the most overpriced and worst gym in it's locality. I was a loyal paying member for 3 years…read moreand went to the gym 5-6 times a week. I recently became more and more frustrated with the Gym's equiptment or lack of it. The Vale doesn't seem to like keeping up to date with modern Fitness phyilosophy and instead invests in expensive cardio machines that are about as much use for stripping fat as a cheese burger!! Also they place great importance on their association with Cardiff FC and allow the team to use the gym's facillities often at the expense of they're paying members... Not only is there a distinct lack of up to date, modern training equiptment, the equiptment that is there, is not looked after and not very well maintained. The matting in the Weights area is a death trap and 3 months after I complained that people were tripping over the matting while holding heavy weights, nothing was done about it. They are also extremely keen to take your money, even when the extautionate monthly cost should probably include or allow me to take my 18 month year old daughter for a 15 minute swim.... Instead I paid £12 each time (Including my partner)!!!!! The one thing I will say, the personal trainers are exceptional!! But they would all agree with the above statements!! Now I've asked to cancel, they falsly accused me of using foul language in the gym and have asked me to pay two months notice. I would warn anyone who is thinking of joining this gym to reconsider because it's run by narrow minded, unproffesional people with a pre historic attitude to fitness.

This place should be better than 2 stars as it is and could be even more so such a good facility…read more The building is good and the facilities are great. The staff are in the main very helpful. However .... The signs asking people remove their shoes before going in to the changing rooms are ignored by many people so the cubicle floors of the changing rooms end up filthy. The staff walk back and forth ignoring the point and I have never seen them ask a shoe wearer to remove their shoes. So expect to come out of there with dirty feet. The pool is rarely at 50m and when it is it is often very busy. Monday and Thursday nights can be quieter if you aren't too tired to train at 10pm ... In the mornings and now at weekends many of the lanes are taken by the swimming club. Not an issue but expect the other lanes to be crowded and have people of varying ability in each lane. If you are a quick swimmer expect to be frustrated as you dawdle behind a breast stroker waiting for a safe moment to overtake them. The pool is regularly booked out for galas and swim events at weekends and the information/warnings about these events is very discrete or difficult to find so be prepared for Saturday / Sunday morning disappointment and wasted trips. The pleasure pool is mayhem. The lifeguards do a good job but expect to be kicked by other swimmers, by bumped into, swam over/into and come out feeling the most unrelaxed you ever will. As a venue for promoting healthy lifestyle this place surpasses itself. Not!!! For those who bother to use the benches to remove or put on shoes, there is a glittering array of chocolates and sugary drinks in four vending machines, ideally located opposite you. If you or your children manage to get passed them, there are more sugary calorie dispensers by the exit turnstiles and just in case you haven't managed to give in to the sugar, there are 4 more vending machines on the way out. Only the British would fill a "healthy" sports venue with obesity causing, tooth rotting filled vending machines. So, while you are trudging home in the dirty foot rot of other people from the changing rooms, you can comfort yourself with chocolate and fizzy pop to remind yourself what a healthy life you live!

There is a gym, sauna, jacuzzi and do all sorts of fitness classes too for quite a reasonable monthly fee. Swimming for adults is £3.70 and no time limit. Family tickets also available. The only downsides are that the changing rooms can be a bit chaotic and its always worth checking out whats going on before you head down because they often have events on at the weekend so you might not get in.

If this…read moremeans nothing to you, he's the less good brother of former British number one John Lloyd, who also wasn't that good though he did get to marry Chris Evert back in the day, so he must have been doing something right. As you'd probably expect, the main focus here is tennis - indeed they probably have the best facilities in the city here, with more courts than you can shake a racquet at and lessons on offer. I've only used the gym and these are also top notch, with every gadget you can think of (the running machines are even equipped with individual TV screens with Sky Sports to entertain you while you slog away). This is, of course, very expensive though - I only went because I was given a free pass - and unless you have a real devotion to tennis or fitness and live near Ashton, it's probably not worth the expense or the journey.

This place is a top rank health and fitness establishment…read more The changing rooms are spacious and well kept. The lockers have ample room to hang your shirt and store all your belongings. The floor tiles were nice and warm as well. Heated? Maybe, or perhaps my feet were just particularly cold ... (email and ask me about heat transfer if you like, I used to teach Science....) The swimming pool is about 20m so not quite long enough for my liking but more than ample. They have a couple of lanes set aside for dedicated lengths and the rest of the pool is open for a free swim. To add to the luxury of the pool area there is a spa/hot tub, sauna and steam room (Me like the steam room!). The shower area in the changing rooms are also well kept. Their is a great machine that shakes your swim wear almost dry in a few seconds (I call him Shakey) to prevent your bag from getting soaking wet. Nice touch. The gym itself has a large array of cardiovascular machines including steppers, treadmills and various other contraptions. There is also a choice between free weights or machines depending on your preference. The club room serves food/drinks and has a few bigscreen TV scattered about the place with sports or news on show. There are a couple of PC's available not to mention the wifi setup. Being a David Lloyd centre it is big on racquet sports so there are squash, badminton and tennis courts aplenty. The centre boasts a large car park and is right next door to the park and ride so it is fairly well set up for commuters and drivers. The downside of this fitness paradise ---- Expense! I am not a member (I'm allowed in while my local pool is being repaired) but I am told the monthly fee can be as much as £80 a month. Who knows? You know it is going to be expensive though when a company doesn't list its price on their own website! This aside, it is still the best fitness/leisure centre I've ever been to.
