A'oua gave me the cutest medium sized Senegalese Twists late on a Saturday night (ie, she started braiding my hair at 9pm until 2am). This was the first time (ever) getting twists and i was thrilled with the end result. She completed my hair in 4 hours, my edges are fine and my scalp was sore-ish (but its braids, its supposed to be a lil sore) but worth it for $120, including the hair. The salon set up leaves a little to be desired but if you're looking for fancy, cross the Hudson for twice the money and wait time. Pack a snack, download a movie, bring a book and sit to get your hair braided. Support your local businesses especially this hard working lady. read more

I am very upset. I witnessed the woman doing my hair literally rip out a large tangle from my natural hair. Overall, the handling of my hair was too rough and careless. I detangled my hair thoroughly before coming in so i know the hair that came out was not shedding. It was breakage from rough handling and from straight up bring ripped out by the stylist. I feel disrespected by the lack of care and consideration given to my natural hair. RIPPED OUT IN A CHUNK!!! read more

I've gotten braids here years ago and went back recently because the braider I go to in Brooklyn was not available. She's great but tired of traveling for this. . Did a walk in got there a few min after they opened to get in early . She told me come back at 11 am . I get there at 11 there 5 more ppl waiting at least and no one to do my hair . I basically waited for 2 hours +40 min then left I just wanted 10 braids which take no more than 1 hr . I left and went to YouTube and did it myself...smh . I should not be able to count my braids or see scalp...after paying $150 and showing two pictures to the stylist AND requesting medium sized braids, I still didn't get what I wanted/paid for. Should've known when I spent just 3.5 hours in the chair with only one person doing my hair. I left with a soaking wet shirt as well as the stylist let the braids drip all down my back..good thing it is summer. My hairline/edges are sparse but that is even more of a reason the braids and sections should've been made smaller to make the hair fuller. This my vacation hairstyle and I am not happy with it. I would've liked to style the braids in multiple ways but the hair is simply not full enough to do so; there's exactly ELEVEN braids in the front row/ crown of my hair, idk why Yelp won't let me add pics to my review. I guess I truly can't get a good braid job in my neighborhood as I originally thought and will be traveling to Newark or EO the next time I need quality braiding services. read more

I initially went to another braid shop but was advised that they were full. I quickly googled braid shops near me and came across A'oua's Perfect Braids. When I called A'oua's, I was told to try back at 5pm; however, the owner immediately called me back, requesting that I come right then. Upon arrival, I did not wait too long and I was satisfied with my hair. I have been to a couple of braid shops within the past 6 months and what I appreciate about A'oua's is that (1) the area is clean, (2) the workers are pleasant, (3) my braids were not too tight, and (4) the price is reasonable. The biggest inconvenience for me was the parking: I had to park 3 blocks away. Overall, I feel that this place was a great choice for me, and I plan to return. I've been going here to get my hair braided for a year and the ladies are pretty nice and very fast. Olga does my braids and I only go to her. She waited for me for 2 hours once and I was very grateful to her. The only thing is sometimes they change prices and I don't like that. I would have loved to give this place a better review but an employee/ family member should not be allowed to do children's hair @ this establishment. This employee was very unprofessional and disrespectful. Upon walking in she was eating her food as we waited until she was finished she did not go and wash her hands. Her demeanor was very off just aggressively grabbing the baby's hair. So I asked does the braids hurt if so please please be gentile because both girls were sensitive to heavy hands. She rolled her eyes sucked her teeth and said oh no these kind of braids don't hurt. As she got to the top I asked please the next row began to make the side part. This is my child and the hair style is what I'm looking for. She asked me excuse me do you do hair? telling her yes I do she again rolls her eyes not following the instructions I gave her for the baby's hair. Now at the top and the part can't be applied to the side I asked for it to be on she got very irate slapping her hands and yelling at the owner. She told me let me I know what I'm doing! I now explain to the owner and her response was she didn't understand the request or what I was asking for. grabs the baby's hair and I told her if you have a attitude please don't take it out on my child. Swears in her language and slaps the comb down and says I'm done. This woman was very aggressive. Honestly if children weren't involved this day would have ended very differently. This woman won't always be so lucky that a parent won't beat her to the white meat for her disrespectful Behavior! Keep her away from children's hair until she can control herself and know what customer service is and if she can't provide it she should definitely get into another line of work. Although the owner /head stylist finished the girls hair and tried to keep us both at ease she never gave an apology for her unruly employee! I went there today to get my hair braided she was to lazy to braid it all the way. I had to put rubber bands at home because the braids are opening. The lady there charged me 170 plus I purchase my own hair to the shop. I call her once I get home to see if she can fix it and she said because I had bad hair that why my ends are like that. A great African Hair Braiding salon. They are very professional and nice, especially the owner. I've been to a couple of African braiding salons and they are almost always rude and act like they were doing you a big favor. But this place is nothing like that, I've never had to wait more than 30 minutes to get my hair braided. I've been here 3 times, for Senegalese twist, and twice for box braids, and I was very please with the end results each time. I would defiantly recommend. read more

I created an account just to write this review. :) I went to this salon for the first time today. The location was in the historic downtown section of Jersey City which if you know the area it is very nice. When I called to make the appt, the owner asked which style I wanted and gave me the price. I liked the straightforwardness. I came in for kinky twists. My stylist(Aoua/owner)did a beautiful job :). The stylists here were very friendly. They were also accommodating and considerate. As mentioned previously, I went in for kinky twists. When I first arrived, the staff greeted me with a smile and knew based on my arrival time that I was there for my kinky twists since I had called. This style takes a few hours. A walk-in customer that wanted a 30min hair style arrived later and my stylist asked if they minded coming back since it was busy, but the customer insisted on waiting. I let the stylist take them first because I didn't mind. However, it demonstrates the level of professionalism and courtesy that the stylists here have. In any other shop they would have taken them without even asking or even stop tending you midway and then resume afterwards. Here they make each client feel important. After a while I had gotten hungry but I didn't want to leave the shop(though there were great spots walking distance and next door). The stylist had numbers to local food spots that deliver and even called and passed me the phone so that I could place the order! They treated me very well. I watched television on their suspended flat screen and the time went by quickly. My overall experience was awesome. Without a doubt I would recommend this salon. read more

Found this spot quite by accident - incredibly efficient, started right on time, perfect corn rows and out in record time (done by Shirley). VERY impressive. There was also a lady there getting a short razor edge weave finished off (by someone that I believe was the owner) when I arrived and her hair looked GORGEOUS. Little diamond in the rough. I had my hair braided here a few weeks ago. They were very reasonable with price and very friendly women. I have my hair braided into a bob, hair was included. This shop is up one flight of stairs so be prepared to walk, i am unsure of a handicap accessible entrance. I will definitely return to this shop. read more

really unhappy with my braids I have so many extra strands of my own hair that's not braided. And some of my hair that is braided are attached to the other braids next to them if that make any sense . They did such a sloppy job I'm so sad because I paid a lot of money for them not to be neat. But they were very slick because the braids around my edges are neat so it would look good . Honestly the worst braids I ever gotten and I've got braids from girls that around professionals. I was going here for the entire summer getting my hair done in 6 braids and paying 45. One day i went and the owner was present and they told me i had to pay 55 it's what i was paying all along, knowing i had bank statements to prove it, not that i should of even had to show bank statements because i went about 7 times prior in 3 months. I showed her my bank statements and her workers acted shocked as if they had never done my hair at that price. The owner had a nasty attitide and i could tell she was talking about me in her language. Shes very rude and un professional. The salon is a hole in a wall but if you're looking for (Perfect) braids at a reasonable price, this is the place. The women at the salon are experienced, however their customer service needs improvemnt. The salon was typical. A sofa for waiting, salons chairs a bathroom and TV. It is on the second floor of a walk up building. The service was ok. I asked for faux locks. My stylist tried to convince me to get another style because locks take a long time. I said if she didn't want to do it I could go elsewhere. She was already with another customer so the owner called another lady to start my hair. She arrived about an hour later and started to braid without asking me me what size i wanted the braids. I said medium. She made like 50 braids on my head! I was just so tired of being there i just wanted to get it over with. (Not to mention there was one other stylist who started to do someones hair said she was coming back in 15 minutes and never came back !). Continued with wrapping the braids to make it look like dreads. I asked her not to make it tight since I only plan on having the style in for a month and I cannot handle tight styles. She agreed to not make it tight but by the time she finished I was in so much pain I wanted to scream! There is not enough braids so the style has no volume. I pretty much paid $150 to be in excruciating pain and get coughed on! Yes my stylists was sick and coughing. I regret this soooo bad. I would much rather go to a higher end salon and pay more for better service and better results. read more
