Nice selection of antiques. Seems much higher in prices than other local antique stores. We did not purchase anything here.

My dad used to renovate run-down stuff he'd salvaged from the Alna Dump (dump picking was legal; this was the early 70s) and sell or trade to Elmer. Hours would go by. So much amazing and rusty junk, and random things like thousands of wooden eggs and bags of antique long white gloves and lace tablecloths sold by the pound. Anyway, it's an antique mall, now, but there is still the old vibe there, chickens wandering around, rusty sawblades, and if you go out in the back rooms which maybe you aren't supposed to...The smell of wet cement and the old creepy tools hanging up *chef's kiss* Oh, and you'll leave with something reasonably priced. Last trip's treasures were that Yes album with the six part fold-out-art ($8) and a kinda cheesy old painting with ornate frame ($13); I'll toss the painting and upcycle the frame. Pretty sure some ghosts "live" there...bring a camera and take some spooky pictures to see spirit orbs! Can't recommend an Elmer's afternoon highly enough, particularly on a cold, rainy day.

Excellent used and vintage items shop. Multiple vendors with interesting well priced items. Owners…read moreare very nice and welcoming. A great stop on your way to wherever you are going. Plan on at least 30 minutes of browsing to get through the 3 levels.

It seems there are very few vendors any more. Most of the table spaces on our most recent Saturday visit were empty. The sellers continue to be an interesting bunch which is true of the sellers at any flea market I've ever been too. They will chat you up with stories of all kinds; they are "characters". Most of the vendors here are Mainers with a few other folks who travel from flea market to flea market around New England in the summer and warmer climes in the winter. This flea market holds a special place for me though. More than 25 years ago when I first came here with my husband (an inveterate collector and antique maven from childhood!) I found what became the first of my now overflowing collection of vintage cocktail shakers....and in fact the one I bought here is one of the most valuable in my collection. I remember I paid $22.00 for it having "talked the seller down" from $25.00 dollars. That emerald green glass shaker is now worth a couple of hundred dollars but I would never part with it. It's a beauty. At that time I was not nearly as interested in flea markets as my husband was and is. He would stop at any flea market he saw back then to my eye-rolls and groans. He would say to me: "Find something to collect and you will love them too". How right he was! It was the memory of my parents NYC cocktail parties that got me thinking of collecting the cocktail shakers and some other vintage cocktail era memorabilia. As a child peeking into the living room at one of my parent's parties, I saw glamour, sophistication and beauty....the women beautiful in their dresses and the men handsome in their suits and ties. I have photos of my parents' parties with cocktail shakers at the ready to pour martinis and I was inspired to go on the cocktail era memorabilia hunt. It's been sad to see the decline in vendors here at Montsweag...and maybe this means a decline in interest in flea markets? We will still stop here when we are in the area with high hopes there is a turn-around. If you're vintage hounds like we are, it's simply a fun way to spend a couple of hours.

I love the Hobby Horse slogan posted on their website: "Always a great selection of moose antlers"…read moreand with that you know for sure, Toto, you're not in Kansas anymore but firmly grounded in a Maine experience. One of the gazillion things we love about Maine is the sheer number of flea markets that you run into while driving about during the spring, summer and early fall months. Hobby Horse was not the best we've been to nor the largest but we still enjoyed stopping by. There was a mixture of some antiques and interesting Maine arcana, a bit of sad junk and unfortunately some reproductions. Flea markets, like antique shops are often windows into the past of a particular community. I find this kind of "treasure" hunting irresistible. Prices were generally fair but remember, if you're polite you can always respectfully ask: "What's your best price?". You never want to insult the seller but sadly I've seen it done. You still have a little time to check this place out before it closes for the season in mid-October. It will re-open after that at the end of April. I find the sellers at most flea markets to be an interesting group of people and Hobby Horse was no exception to this. The sellers love to talk about collecting and about their wares and how they may have come by them. It makes for a fun time with an opportunity to learn a thing or two. Be a little wary though because sometimes the provenance stories of the items for sale are a little too good to be true. Nothing special jumped out at us during our visit so we didn't buy anything. We still had fun rummaging about. It's certainly worth a stop if you're driving up Route 1. You never know what creative decorating ideas you might come up with for a rack of moose antlers.
