It is not an exaggeration to say that we loved the Antioch School so much we relocated across the country for it. We were a family living in Los Angeles, raising 2 young kids and had learned enough about the values of grit, self-directed learning, and raising empowered kids that we knew the right school environment was of the utmost importance to us. The problem was, the only kinds of schools in Los Angeles that offer that kind of education cost LITERALLY 20-30 thousand dollars a year. For PRESCHOOL. That is insane, and it was impossible for us to consider. But when we discovered the Antioch School, their incredible teachers, the grounds, the philosophy, the history, etc. AND saw that it was not only much less expensive, but offers financial aid to nearly 50% of it's students, it sealed the deal for us. We moved here and have had our oldest in the school for 2 years and his transformation has been incredible. Getting to watch his social skills and capacity for play and learning, trying new things, etc. It's the greatest gift we could give him (and ourselves as parents.) If you're a parent who believes that the modern public system of over-testing and lack of exploration for kids is NOT the solution to raising well-adjusted, smart, capable kids or if you believe that playing outdoors is more important than spending 8 hours a day at a desk, this is the school for you. We moved to Yellow Springs last year and we're so glad we found Antioch School for our 4-year-old daughter. The best part, far and away: we have no question that she is loved and valued. That might sound hokey, but it wasn't until we got here that we realized why it never clicked at the last place - there just wasn't that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you know you'll be supported no matter what, and that you're cared about for who you are as an individual. I can't speak for the other age groups (though we've gotten great vibes from all the staff), but the nursery teacher at Antioch School is quite wonderful - we think she's something special. In case the love didn't sell you, the fact that the kids spend a ton of time outside in a beautiful setting is pretty awesome too. read more

My daughter is in 2nd grade at the Antioch School, which, according to the school's website, "is the oldest democratic school in the country." In a recent message, her teacher Christine reminded parents via email that children would cross the field next to the school to go for the weekly swim at Antioch College, and to make sure our children had extra clothing, because,"Children often find a way of locating the only mud puddle in Yellow Springs on our walk to the pool." Beautiful! Later in the message, she described an all-school meeting where the children worked out together the rules for jumping off the front of the tunnel that was built recently: "We will jump one at a time, making certain that the ground is clear (no children emerging from the tunnel or cycling on the cycle path). It was also agreed that "no stunts" were permitted and that it is safest, and expected that everyone lands on their feet." This is truly a democratic school. This place fosters a childhood that's too rare today. Don't keep children away from from the mud puddle--playing in the dirt is great for a child's immune system and connecting to nature. By having extra clothes when they find the one mud puddle in town, and collaborating on how to jump safely in community, children are given resources that will serve them well forever. Grit? This school is a treasure. Both my children attend. It has been worth every dime. Every morning they wake up excited to go to school. They have been encouraged to pursue their interests in every direction their curiosity has taken them. I know they are truly loved and valued by the teachers.
