They're reasonably priced and have great things like book clubs and meetings with the artist. The owner is in frequently and very involved with the store. I recently went to a Thursday evening art walk through Old Town Scottsdale. We were just interested in hopping from gallery to gallery to beat the summer heat. Our first stop was Anticus and we were blown away by all the fantastic artwork there. However, it really does not stop there. We met Dallas and the owner, Phillip. Both could not be more welcoming. We perused the artwork on the walls, everything from hauntingly beautiful giclees to hand painted Disney cells to gorgeous one of a kind jewelry, and breathtaking sculpture. As we turned a corner in the gallery we found the PERFECT diptych for our home. We were not planning on buying anything but when you find something that speaks to you, you need to act. Phillip and Dallas were SO helpful. They showed us the paintings in various lighting conditions, told us about the artist, and gave us the gift of time to take it all in. We left to peruse other galleries, but none gave us the warm inviting feelings that Anticus gave to us. Phillip is such a passionate artist and his love for what his gallery holds comes through in everyone who works there. They make purchasing fine art joyful and you walk in a customer and you leave feeling like family. Phillip is also passionate about art as a community and even hosts a book club. I am very much looking forward to a long friendship with Phillip, Dallas, and Anticus. If you haven't been there, please please please RUN....there is so much good there! I can't rave enough about Anticus. I've visited several times now and each time I am mesmerized by not only the art, but the selection of literature. From Dr. Seuss to golf history to romance novels, they have it all! The fact that they host a book club amidst their beautiful shop truly sets this spot apart from others. Not to mention, the owner Phillip is a joy to speak with, as are all other employees I have met there. I strongly recommend paying the gallery/bookstore a visit and signing up for their mailing list as well, to be in the loop for upcoming events such as book club meetings and visiting artists or authors. This gallery has recently moved to Scottsdale road. My husband and I visited last weekend while celebrating our anniversary. Karen was a very nice, informative, and engaging consultant, answering all of our questions. It was especially neat to see a sculpture-in-progress that one of the owners is currently working on. I love the way the gallery is laid out, and that fact that they also have added books to their shop. Many very beautiful and inspiring pieces of art are on display. Anticus is our favorite gallery/gift shop/book store in old town Scottsdale! My granddaughter and I found Anticus when it was located in Kierland, and we've followed Phillip Payne, the owner/artist, as he relocated the gallery. Every time we've gone in, even to watch Phillip create his art, we find something to buy and take home, from books to jewelry to art. And granddaughter Natalie, an artist herself, really enjoys talking to everyone who works there -- they've always treated her with respect, from our first trip there when she was 16 to now. We finally stopped in today and we were pleasantly surprised but the uniqueness - a fine art gallery, jewelry and bookstore. What a great selection of books! The children's section has a fun seating are and books are sorted by grade level. Today was Dr. Seuss day celebrating their Dr. Seuss exhibit. The owners were in costumes and had refreshments. Last Saturday my husband and I went to Old Town Scottdale to check out the galleries on Main Street. Anticus had a fantastic selection of art work, jewelry and books and it was invigorating just to walk around and be surrounded by beauty. The best thing about Anticus Books and Fine Art is the fact that the service is state of the art - no pun intended - I always get an amazing answer to any question I have about books and art- let's face it where can one have a fully operational book store mixed in with an art gallery? The staff is very knowledgeable on most every topic and always have an answer to help you find exactly what you are looking for. Phillip is not only a fabulous sculptor/ artist he is also the owner/co-founder who came up with the mixture of books and art in one place. While walking around the Kierlands Commons we discovered Desert Mountain. We really enjoyed the variety of artists on display and the friendliness and knowledge of the associates. We were able to watch Philip work on his latest bronze. still in its early stages, and have enjoyed stopping by to see the continued progression. On probably our 4th visit we "discovered" Albert Dreher and his unique take on the Southwest cliff dwellings combined with an oil wash technique. Desert Mountain helped us develop a custom look commissioned piece that now hangs proudly at the entrance to our new Scottsdale home. Was on my way to my car when I noticed a studio full of light, with vibrant paintings, sculptures, and tables carved out of wood. There was a young man happily busy moving paintings and sculptures around, and I decided I'd step inside. Walked in and asked if he didn't mind my having a look around, and he welcomed me in, apologized for the loud music and proceeded to turn the volume down, and I said he didn't have to, because I love Jason Mraz' music! He had Mraz' Mr. A-Z playing and I was enjoying my first few seconds indoors. Whoever this man is, I knew I already liked him! :) After a few minutes, he apologized for interrupting me, as he didn't want to hover around, but offered to answer any questions I might have. I asked if the artists featured here, of which there are 35, are all local. He said no, they're from all over, with eight from America, and one from Argentina! Turns out the young man I've been conversing with, Phillip Payne, is the owner, and is himself a sculptor who's been selling his art professionally since he was 14. (He has a finished sculpture and another he's still working on on site.) Phillip fulfilled his dream to open an art studio before he turned 30, which he did "by a month!" last February 10, 2017. I congratulated him on reaching his one month anniversary. (Belated happy birthday, Phillip!) I didn't want to keep him from his duties at the gallery, or from his latest work, so I decided to leave. I am very much looking forward to returning in the near future to see what's new and check on Phillip's latest progress (he's learning to paint!), as well as to see if that juniper - carved table I liked, with what looked to be turquoise inlay and priced at $4200, is still there. read more
