Okay let me preface this with some background info. My roof hadn't been upgraded in over 35 years…read moreand we were battling leaks almost every rain storm. We knew we needed a new roof asap but the pricing we were getting from every roofing company was a little out of reach for us. So we were resolved to patch up the areas every now and again, and it would usually hold for a year or so, until we had to deal with more leaks and water damage. We were doing this for several years. Then we met with James and Fix a Roof. He took a look and assessed the damage. We knew it wouldn't be pretty because we were patching for years and were fearful he was going to charge as high as all the other roof contractors. He quoted us a price. Every other company we called for estimates was almost double what James quoted us. And he wrote up a contract which he clearly outlined the materials he would use, including replacement and repair of all areas of wood rot and water damage, then laying down a new roof. His guys were up there working non-stop all day long for almost a week. We could hear them hammering, and blowtorching all day long. They finished the job. Then came the test. We had several days of unrelenting down pouring rain, pummeling our new roof. Not a single drop entered the house. Fantastic job at an amazing price. It was just about half of what other companies wanted to charge, including a warranty guaranteeing his work. I am incredibly impressed. My experience with this roofing company was great. We are very happy we decided to use them.

I was stressed at the time due to my father just dying and starting a new job, so I probably wasn't as diligent in my search as I should've been. But in reading his profile, he seemed like a an able, efficient guy. He wasn't. He was befuddled from the moment he walked in the door. After trying to put in the ceiling fan for an hour, he finally told me that it just couldn't be installed properly because the beams in the ceiling weren't secure enough. OK, so on to the mirror. He struggled with this as well, with my trying to help. He finally was able to hang it but it was totally crooked. I didn't say anything because he was making me nervous. He kept taking phone calls. Then asking me questions about what I did for a living and making somewhat snarky comments on the size of my TV. (I'm a movie fanatic and had just bought a huge flatscreen). Hanging the pots and pans rack didn't work out either. He drilled a few holes and then said he couldn't find the right beam and yet again that it just couldn't be done. So out of 3 tasks, he barely accomplished 1. When I had called him, he said he'd charge me $100 for each task. Again, I wasn't thinking straight and just agreed. Which leads me to the most galling part of all this. I asked how much he wanted for what he was able to accomplish. He said $300. I was shocked and freaked out. The guy's demeanor is a little weird and at that point I just wanted him out. So I paid him the $300 so he would leave. In retrospect, it's clear that he thought I was some idiot gentrifier with a lot of money to burn. At one point he made some bitter comments about being priced out of the neighborhood. So no doubt he felt like he had total license to fleece me in the way that he did. Yes, I'm stupid for not doing my due diligence. But this guy is just something else. The following week we got a handyman from Almac True Value - Henry - and he was amazing. He got everything I needed done in just over an hour and for a lot less. He was super-pleasant too. Anyway - avoid this guy AT ALL COSTS.

As soon as Joe came in I realized that him and I knew a lot of the same people in the area as he was a local kid from Middle Village and so was I. After a few times coming to the house and telling us what he can do and us telling him what we wanted, we were able to settle in and agree for the go ahead of the renovation. Let me just say that was a great move. We interviewed many contractors but Joe seemed to know what we wanted. He also knew how we can improve on what we wanted. Joe has vision from his many years of being in the business. Needless to say, he was fair in his price compared to the other contractors that we had met. Throughout the course of the renovation my wife and I were astounded by how clean and neat they were. In addition I was very happy about the way his team conducted themselves in my home and how respectful they were in front of my two young daughters and my wife, which I very much appreciated. The finished job is awesome. Joe and his team did a great job in transforming my old 70s kitchen to a more modern up-to-date classy looking kitchen. My wife and I couldn't be happier. We recommend Joey Cotoia and his team for any kind of renovations that you need within the house. He will work with you while giving you great ideas. He will be fair with his cost. Thanks Joe, Tony, Chris and team for giving us a what we wanted.

So that's been fun. Fast forward to this past fall, where we finally decided to tackle the (frankly, horrifying) first floor; kitchen, living room, dining room, laundry room and adding a desperately needed powder room. Given that our second floor and attic had already been redone, you could say I've been around the ol' contractor block. We've had some good and some bad, but no one I trusted to do the entire job. As my wife and I were figuring out what we wanted, and could realistically afford to do, my neighbor invited us over to see her newly renovated basement. This was previously a raw space that was now pristine. It looked like new construction in a 100+ year old house. And our neighbor had only the best things to say about her contractor, Joe. We eventually setup a meeting with Joe and he really goes the extra mile from the jump. He and his wife Karin are wonderful, down to earth people who didn't seem bothered by the toddler chaos going on all around us while we spoke. They even took us around to see past jobs of similar scope. Endlessly helpful. When we decided to move forward, cost was obviously a factor. Joe was honest, transparent, and willing to work with us to stay within our budget. Once the job started, it went as smoothly as one could hope. Joe's crew are a great bunch of guys. I won't lie and say that not having a kitchen for 10 weeks with 2 young kids is fun stuff, but they made it as painless as possible. The workspace was always clean and we had a path to our fridge. And they took the time to do things right -- leveling out ceiling beams that could have passed as a template for a skateboard before putting up sheetrock. Joe called regularly with status updates, and to hash out any unclear requirements. He'a got a great eye for design -- making a number of suggestions we were thrilled with -- from room layouts, down to details like a barn door for our laundry room. He suggested cabinets that I had reservations about at first, but ended up loving. He and Karin even came with us to pick out countertops and appliances. Above and beyond. To wrap it up, finding a good contractor is hard and we found a GREAT one, so I was almost hesitate to write this. I don't want y'all booking him up until 2022! I've got a couple more jobs to do!

My fiancée and I were initially very excited by Emile Sdrak and his construction team. After…read moresourcing multiple estimates for a $35k kitchen and master bathroom remodel, we thought Emile seemed exceptional from all initial meetings: professional and punctual. Emile is a great salesman. Unfortunately, the actual execution of the promised product leaves much to be desired. Emile said our project was to extend no more than 4-5 weeks. It took 8+. Beginning in early April 2019, there were periods where some times his team would not show up--especially later in April. Following inquiries as to why Emile informed us that his team is comprised of mainly Eastern Orthodox Christians so that Easter became over a weeklong hiatus of our project. We wouldn't have been so annoyed about it if Emile had informed us about this from the get-go. But given that this is an annual calendar holiday, it would have been nice to be informed of such known delays before picking Emile and his team. And if this were the only problem of communication, I wouldn't raise it here. But there were also many days where expected team members wouldn't show, and my fiancée and I were living in construction. We had nowhere else to go. Speaking of, my fiancée is (obviously) female and has a more flexible schedule than I do. I would leave her to communicate things in-person to Emile since he would occasionally pop by when concerns were raised. But he would not take her seriously and try to gaslight her about construction issues. Whether he is a misogynist or not is not my judgment to make. I say this for other partners who intend to leave their female significant other at home to monitor and guide some of the construction processes. One gaslighting example is when Emile's team lead, Sam, accidentally installed our $10k cabinets at the incorrect height. Emile said that they had started to install the cabinets from the opposite side. Screw holes in the drywall told a different story. Speaking of, my $10k cabinets (just wanted to emphasize that) are littered with screw holes which Emile admitted in a text message was a poorly done job. Sloppy tilework was also an issue. And while some furniture items were being moved for painting, our beautiful hardwoods were scuffed and scratched. So much so that Emile agreed to take some money off the final price. Speaking of, despite his images across his site and social media, Emile must not be used to working with individuals of means. When we gave him our second check (after paying our down payment for the project with no issue), he rudely asked if it was going to bounce. This was "because he recently had a check bounce for another project." Emile was here late last month to fix some issues that had arisen since the project "ended." I waited to post this review because I knew that would be the case. My fiancée was home to let him in to fix some of the tile issues that had appeared. During his work, Emile admitted that he had received a lot of complaints during our job with his other jobs because of his poorly qualified team. I've attached pictures of what they did to my expensive cabinets. There are much better options than Emile Sdrak and his Emilco Construction, LLC. I leave 3 stars because I believe Emile could potentially do better. UPDATE 12/17/19: 1 star. Faulty problems with installations. Dishwasher not secure and started falling out of place 3 months after install. Emile acknowledges the problem and said he would be here at noon. At 12:30 I texted him and asked him his location and he said it couldn't be here for another two hours. Unprofessional and poor quality. Take your contractor business elsewhere.
