Private medical insurance is a category that everyone loves to hate. Between the egregious cost and the Catch-22 labyrinth of mindless bureaucracy it's easy to see why all of Anthem's subsidiaries generate one solitary star across 450 reviews on Yelp. After a few months with their coverage, I can honestly say it doesn't suck but... in trying to resolve a recent billing error, I inadvertently confirmed through one of their Customer Service Reps, that most of their billing/approval decisions are performed by "bots." Thankfully, she was able to correct the mistake it but I came away from the encounter cold turkey sober, fully understanding what I always suspected was true but never wanted to admit -- my healthcare is being run by algorithm. I suspect all providers do it but I never thought that they would so freely admit it. Four stars for the truth. read more

They have the worst web site for members and if you are able to get a live person for customer service though a live chat or call....they have no understanding of what you are talking about. I suspect their language skills are lacking along with their comprehension as their sentences dont make sense and they dont know anything about their service, how things work....absolutely nothing. read more

Horrible !!!! i've been with them for almost a year and have been disappointed from the very beginning The customer service for the most part, is inept and gives out wrong information I purposely called before having an echocardiogram to get the exact number that I would be responsible for The representative told me it wouldn't be more than a couple hundred dollars on my part and I got hit with a bill for $1600 Absolutely unacceptable and this is not my first challenge with them Being kept on the phone for an hour, and then still not getting an answer I am hoping to clear this up and if so, I will absolutely update this review, but in the interim, I am going to be looking for a different insurance company read more

This is the worst insurance ever. If I could give a -10, I would. I have been isolated in my home for over a year now because Anthem states the medication is not used for the type of Colitis I have. I have to wear diapers and pads so I do not soil myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been unable to socialize for over a year. Why are we forced by our employers to take such horrible-rated insurance? I would sooner pay a higher monthly premium and decent insurance. read more

Awful. It's insulting that the state of Connecticut puts their residents through this garbage. They deny EVERY claim even for preventative care. Customer service is outsourced and impossible to deal with. They don't help you with anything and they do not care. They transfer you around and around and either disconnect the call or promise callbacks that never happen. Doctors offices hate dealing with them and the state should be ashamed of themselves. Connecticut has some of the highest taxes in the country pushing its middle class into poverty and now they are trying to kill us all of by sticking us with the worst health insurance imaginable while still charging us a fortune to have this crap. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.I left United Healthcare to join Anthem...since I live in CT...thinking I would be able to speak with a CT representative. I paid $25 more per month...thinking I would get an AMERICAN representative to talk to. WRONG. You get the Philippines. Since I lived in the Philippines I have a more accurate understanding of the people and the culture.They are the loviest people. HORRIBLE AT CUSTOMER SERVICE... because they speak the QUEENS ENGLISH...... They read from a script and cannot answer any question directly. They never answer without a script. I recently moved from Rhode Island Connecticut and I have to tell you Blue Cross anthem of Connecticut is the worst insurance company I have ever seen. And I can tell you as a healthcare provider myself I have dealt with many different insurance companies and anthem is garbage. They have systematically denied every claim I've had on any service since I've lived here. I have called and tweeted them they don't respond. Otherwise then to say "somebody will contact you". I've had to cancel all of my lab work all of my doctors appointments everything so of course my health is now being compromised, but they don't care. I've now had to call the healthcare advocates office and file a complaint with the Connecticut Health Care office. Absolute garbage insurance. read more

Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield is the worst medical insurance company I've ever had. When I call customer service for information, usually the agent cannot find it, or gives me the wrong information. This year Anthem completely changed the Over The Counter Benefits without any notification to its customers. All of a sudden, we can no longer order OTC items from Walmart online, and the selection of medical items offered from the new vendor NationsOTC is absolutely pitiful. There are a great many medical items that I used to be able to order on Walmart, that I no longer can from NationsOTC. The new lists of products is extremely limited The NationsOTC recording says that customers can still go in the Walmart store to purchase items, but there is no documentation or Walmart catalog produced so that customers know which items would be covered under the OTC plan. And the Nations OTC catalog is nothing short of a joke. There are no product pictures and poor documentation to guide the customer in what they're buying. I am so disgusted, it is highly unlikely that I will purchase Anthem Medical insurance again next year and will look elsewhere. read more

They don't answer their phone or help@anthem emails! Thy have very limited authorization and are unhelpful. After 2 hours of waiting on the phone, their answer is simply no. Anthem took my money for 3 months of health insurance, and then opened their bag of tricks intended to make sure I could never see a doctor. Here are just a few quick highlights: 1. Every time I called, they weren't sure who I was or whether I was covered. But they sure had taken my money. 2. "Register on the website to see a list of doctors." Only the website took my info in form after form, then timed out when I tried to submit. Repeatedly. Reliably even. 3. My phone calls were returned over a week later. Sometimes they responded with letters dated a week later, but the postmark was a month later. 4. After several weeks, I got the website to allow me to register. Over the next couple of hours, through slowly expanding searches, I found that they had no doctors from any specialty within any number of miles from my location. 5. When I called about this: "Who is this? Are you sure you're ensured? Oh, then register on the website for a list of doctors. Etc., etc." 6. They responded to my complaint to the BBB with more stall tactics: A delayed, false-dated letter sent to the wrong address for me, misspelled as well, with forms enclosed and materials suggesting if I handled it through the BBB rather than trusting anthem they would not be able to properly respond to my complaint. Everyone who had Anthem insurance should report them to the Better Business Bureau and see if we can motivate a class action lawsuit. Normally I think American society has become too litigious, but thieving companies like Anthem is what the judicial system is for. I want my money back. read more
