I came to Anna with two pain related issues, both related to sports injuries. The first is mild disk compression of the lower spine and the other is possibly a damaged rotator cuff in the left shoulder. We started the session with an assessment of my general health in order to determine a path forward for treatment, then we moved to the treatment room. Her treatment area was extremely clean and professional and the environment was calming. The acupuncture points (approximately 20) represented Qi (chi) regions that apparently regulate metabolic function and release endorphins when activated. At the conclusion of the treatment session I felt relaxed and noticed a marked change in lower back nerve pain. I have been receiving Acupuncture from Anna Tsu once a week for nearly six months. This unusual length of time is because she is treating the symptoms of my Muscular Dystrophy that include muscle pain, tight and/or knotted muscles, and muscle weakness. MD is a progressive degenerative disease for which there is no treatment or cure at the present time, but that does not mean that the muscles do not respond to Acupuncture or Physical Therapy. For those of you who have a fear of needles, because of the weakness of my muscles, my phlebotomy experiences have been substantially negative, and I put off exploring Acupuncture because of them. In talking to Anna Tsu, she reassured me that if I found the treatment unpleasant, we would not continue. Much to my surprise, I found that despite using dozens of extra-fine pins, I felt only one or two, and that it was not unpleasant. This is worth a try, and you don't have to continue, if you find it unpleasant. Anna Tsu's office, demeanor and voice are calming. The office is small, well appointed, immaculate and comforting; it is located in an easily assessible office building. I have paid attention to her adherence to hygiene, the use of only sterile pins from sealed packages, and the proper disposal of them into a sealed medical container afterwards. I have been present when she removes the sheets after my treatment and always places two freshly laundered sheets on the table in preparation for the next patient. Prior to my first treatment, Anna and I discussed that neither of us knew the potential for Acupuncture treatment for my MD. As to my own experience following treatment, I have found that muscles that have been weak and/or unresponsive for up to ten years have become functional. These have been muscles not affected by deterioration, but that have been unused because of deterioration of adjacent muscles. In other areas, I have found that affected muscles have become more responsive to my physical therapy routine and tend to hold the benefit of exercise longer. Where I have knotted muscles that a literally pulling my bones out of place, I have relief from that pain and the relaxed muscle is able to function. The consistent visits for Acupuncture have enabled me to increase the length of time and distance I am able to walk daily. Because my muscles are at the extreme of weak, they tend to allow bones to "drift" out of place and then they knot, necessitating continuing assistance from Anna for relief. But thank goodness, I have found a source for that relief who understands my disease. I hope my story has been helpful to you. I recommend Anna Tsu for anyone considering Acupuncture, she has lengthy education in Acupuncture and Chinese herbal use that she acquired studying in both the United States and China. As she works, she is responsive to questions, and provides thorough answers that are easily understood. I have confidence in her ability to converse with a patient, address the issue that they have, and to assess the potential for relief of specific physical complaints.
