I found Anna Kimchi Beauty Salon by a happy coincidence. The decision to try her Salon was based of reviews on Yelp. Reviews for Anna were all 4 or 5 stars. Customers liked Anna's attention to detail and her personal touch. By happy coincidence I realized this was not the first time in her care. Years ago I had gone to another Redwood City salon and Anna was cutting my hair there. It was at least a decade ago and she is even better now. Today, Anna is in her own place. This is her 7th year at this location on El Camino. Her shop is next to an Italian Cannoli/Biscotti Bakery near the edge with Atherton. She has been at this location for 7 years and has over 20 years experience. Go get a Biscotti next door when you are done! Anna's salon has a very homey vibe. Everything is very relaxed. She mainly works by appointment these days. There is only one customer at a time - You. That is what I was looking for: A solo proprietor. Mainly because of Covid fear. I've been coming here for almost a year. Sign outside advertising 8 bucks for mens and children haircut seemed fine to me. I first had my haircut by Anna's daughter. She was very friendly and knew what I wanted when I described my haircut style (not very complicated). We spent almost 30 min cutting my hair, but most of the time we talked. The rest of my haircut has been cut by Anna. She always does a great job. Clean all over and let's me have a chance to look at the back of my head and everywhere to see if I like it. Never had trouble with her, always pleasant to speak with her about almost anything. For 8 bucks, it's an excellent price. I always give her more, but compared to other places, you can't beat it. This place looks anonymous and can be a little hard to find since the sign is hidden next to that of a deli. Parking on the streets can be a problem; there is paid parking in the city lot behind the shop. Anna's salon does haircuts, mani/pedi, facials and waxing. It's run by a Viet woman (they seem to monopolize this trade) who has another lady to help her. The prices are very reasonable and beat those of any fancy salon that provide the same service. Anna (not her real name) is quite friendly, although her strong accent is hard to decipher. I've gotten a body-wax, facial and a haircut from her. She can be hard to get a hold of sometimes, since she also manages another salon in San Jose. I've had to make appointments for the waxing and facial The waxing was quite decent, although the room is dinghy and needs to be upgraded. She didn't do any cleanup with the tweezers as I expected. She did rub me off with some nice baby-oil after the depilation. The facial was quite competently done; she showed me a certificate from a trade-school that certified her as a clinician of sorts, although I've never heard of the institute. She gave me a nice shoulder massage after the facial, which was pleasing. The haircut though was a complete disaster. She didn't seem to know what she was doing and ended up mutilating my hair. Hell naw do not go there! I came in to visit with Anna I did use her service before, decided to give her another go, i like the way she waxed and the type of peel wax that she used. Very clean no strips less pain. Anyways I came in and had to schedule her appoint, by the way she is the only person that does waxing there so if you came in and she was not there you would have to come back. I came back to the salon for my 6pm appointment, and she walks right passed me no smile no greeting, nothing. She gets the room ready and the wax ready. She calls me to the back room. But before we do I ask her the price for my face to be waxed $30.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG! So she decided to tell me about how much the wax costs so on and so forth, I just really wanted a good cleaning and if I paid this much I would not have to do it again for another 6 weeks. Thats cool with me! After about 20 minutes she completed her task I asked two times to please look over my chin and then also my eyebrows twice! She said you are fine. She never gave me a hand mirror so I just used the mirror on the wall! I thought that was not cool! I gave her $35.00 cause she was nice and I wanted to just support her. I woke up this morning and looked at my face and was appalled at all the hairs that she did not clean. Not baby hairs but just like hello heres one and heres another one! I am not ever going back! Waxing Disappointment I did a walk in appointment to Anna Kim Chi on 822 Main Street in Redwood City, thinking that I could get an eyebrow and upper lip waxing done. Since the sign outside said in bright neon lights "waxing," I thought they would know what they're doing and I'd be out of there quick. I believe the lady who was available to do the waxing was the owner of the shop. I walked into the waxing room, which was not very tidy and reeked of burning incense. The first application of wax to the middle of my eyebrows was extremely hot, as if she did not check the temperature. It was obvious, as I flinched a couple of times, but she must not have read my facial signals. On top of the burning pain, she walked away from the table and out of the room a couple of times to talk to another customer and co-worker, leaving the hot wax on my face longer than it should have been. It was excruciating and I just wanted to cry. After pulling it off, she did some plucking and snipping. For the upper lip, typically, wax would be spread in parts of the upper lip, i.e. left, right, upper middle area. As well, it would take one pull to remove the hair. She spread the wax on all areas at once, and pulled it off right away. Because there was still hair on the upper lip, she repeated the left side 2 more times. I was horrified, as I felt the blisters forming. When she was done, I checked the mirror, only to find that there were still strands under my eyebrows that she missed. She did a very mediocre job. We argued a little, as I tried to convey that there were still hairs and then she rudely gave me the tweezers so that I could pluck them out myself. Additionally, the right side of my upper lip still had a significant amount of hair, as if the wax didn't take. She didn't want to do it again, as my skin was already irritated from the previous application. I also noticed that there were still remnants of wax left on, which I had to clean off myself. She also left sticky wax in my hair, which she unsuccessfully tried to clean off. Yikes! Now, isn't the whole point of doing a decent waxing job is so that the customer wouldn't do it herself?! This whole situation was a complete mess. I paid her, which I personally think was not worth the $20, as she did not render her services adequately. I could have gone to the local nail salon at the mall and had a better waxing done for less. I was so upset leaving the shop from the poor attitude and service that I took from her. My husband immediately went back to get information to report such shoddy business practice to the better business bureau. She argued with him, too, that "if I was not happy, then don't come back." Well, I don't plan to return. I was just disappointed because she obviously was not competent enough to do the task correctly, and her rudeness didn't help the situation. That is just plain unacceptable. Fortunately, I was able to get my money back, but we still are going to report her. read more

This place is run by a good hair stylist, but other then Anna the others can't cut hair. I went in the other day for a shape up having one of her apprentices, and as she was shaping up my front she shaved caused my hair line to shift higher on my head on one side further up then to the other. It was a huge uneven line that also caused that part of hair to be shaven down to almost baldness when only asked for a quick shape. My only option was for her to shave the rest of my hair to almost a fade length. If your a young man like myself looking for a clean shape up look else where. I know the price is good, but for the experience your recieving going to super cuts for 5 more bucks is worth it. P.S. I was asked to pay for the cut. read more
