I would 100% recommend this tattoo shop. I got my first tattoo here in April from bearded Matt, (apparently there are 2 Matts). He sat down with me for a consultation to discuss exactly what I wanted and drew up an amazing design based on the inspiration pictures I showed him. I was extremely pleased with the outcome and I love my tattoo. The price was great and he was very easy to talk to. If I ever decide to get another one I will definitely return here.

My husband of 30 yrs passed away a few years ago. I have been struggling with what I wanted to do as a memorial tattoo. I walked in on a Saturday afternoon. Chris took his time talking to me about what I wanted and where to put it. He took the actual picture of us holding hands and did a couple of stencils. I deferred to him for the actual size. I would not go there, they act like it's a chore to fit you in. They pick and choose who they take by saying Covid. This shop acts like there shit don't stank. It feels like a race thing cause who the heck waits almost a week to email you back and has an automatic reply. This one artist Cameron do not see him and the apprentice is odd he made me and my friend feel like we had to wait for them and they didn't want to do it from the beginning. This is not a way to represent your state South Carolina. They do have another location in Lexington I would not go there either, because if I had this experience then it's the same there. Hey the artist had a short T-shirt I did not enjoy so o said nice gut and he got mad. I didn't want a tattoo but, I did go else where it felt nice and they took me in. I got my first tattoo here in 2019. I am only now leaving this review because I have gotten tattoos at other places and know they fucked up. I don't remember the name of the tattoo artist but he was white and had a beard. He sketched my tattoo in 5 seconds and very grumpily redid it once. Since it was my first time, I trusted his judgement. My small easy turtle tattoo came out lopsided and blowout occurred (the lines are now very thick). Research before you get your tattoos please! Kylee was PERFECTION. My family decided to get a family tattoo and while my brother, sister and I have done this before, my parents had not. She put us all at ease and obliged last minute size changes. I would HIGHLY recommend Kylee as well as Animated Canvas. Being the first time I've gotten a tattoo, I don't have the best frame of reference, but I couldn't have imagined the experience to have been better. I was looking for a talented tattoo artist in the area, I did some research, looked around, and chose Shane Anderson at Animated Canvas. I liked his style, and I knew he could pull off something amazing. I was right! Shane is the definition of Tattoo Artist. He does AMAZING work. He is extremely talented, his skills are top notch and very professional. His attitude is professional, his work area is clean, he knows what he's doing, it's obvious he's been at this for a very long time, he knows his stuff, he's a genuine nice guy, he's serious about what he does, he won't do you wrong. I have been to Shane many times working on my sleeve (still not done, I know I must get back in that chair!) and I will be back in May for a new memorial tattoo and I can't wait! I fully trust it will be amazing. I cannot tell you how many times I have been stopped in malls, at the store, pretty much anywhere I go, many many times people will want to look up and down my arm and ALWAYS ask me who did my work and I always point them to Shane. You just can't go wrong! Even if you don't live in the area - he is worth a drive, make sure you call ahead and make an appt and even send him some samples! You won't be disappointed! read more

My daughter had an appointment with a specific artist who had already tattooed her 3 times before. My daughter had paid her an $80 deposit for her tattoo appointment that she scheduled. Unfortunately my daughter had gotten sick and WANTED to reschedule her appointment. Needless to say she was told since it was less than 24 hours she needed to pay another deposit OF $80 and would get $20 off when tattoo was complete. This was done through email since the artist dies not like texting or any phone calls. Here's where I am pissed. My daughter has been a customer of yours as well as my son, husband and myself have been tattooed by her as well. Second the artist never said what her policy of cancellation is not one time in all the appointments that my family has had with her. Third is that since she only wants emails from her customers but when my daughter reached out to her prior to change her tattoo the artist never ever got back to her. She is unprofessional and did not offer to reschedule unless she paid another deposit of $80. So now you want $160 for a $80 tattoo. SCAMMER!!!!We now unfortunately live in a Covid world and she has made it known to all of my family her feelings of if someone is sick DO NOT COME and that wearing mask for the rest of eternity she would be completely fine!! Sorry to say but one person spoils the establishment as a whole, so God only knows how the rest of the artists will treat you. read more

I am no stranger to tattoos, and while in the area I was compelled to visit Animated Canvas to discuss a good sized piece to get done on my back. i he kodi and when i first got there he had a nice conversation with the person i had arrived with and then we got started and when i tell you i love my tattoo, the healing process was a lot more smooth and not as nerve wracking as my first tattoo (done at a acquaintance's home), but nonetheless he was a cool dude...him and another tattoo artist were keeping the mood light by making jokes with each other. :) 11/10 would recommend read more

Established in 1996.

Animated Canvas Custom Tattoo was founded by Scot "Spyder" Kumo in the fall of 1996 in Riverside CA, setting the standard for professionalism in tattooing in the Inland Empire. In the fall of 2007, Animated Canvas relocated and settled in Columbia SC and set the standard for cleanliness, professionalism and artistic talent in the mid-lands, quickly becoming known as "Best of Columbia". Animated Canvas has thus far been awarded "Best of Columbia" for five of the last seven years. In the summer of 2009, Animated Canvas, getting ever busier, expanded to Lexington SC. Providing their client base with even more of the best artistic talent in the South Carolina.

Meet the Business Owner: Spyder K.

Owner/Operator of Animated Canvas Custom Tattoo, brought his unique skills to Columbia in 2007. His career has spanned over 30 years and breached 5 continents thus far. Initially self-taught, Spyder did an apprenticeship with Adam West of Panama City FL and further with Mr Buzz of Gulfport MS. Spyder has collected dozens of awards and has been featured in international publications for the last three decades. We tried to get a tattoo on the neck but SC law says NO. so that's an important law to know if you're trying to get a tattoo around the face areas. There is a bathroom available. I suggest contacting them ahead of time or visit them to get a feel of what you would like.

i recently got a fine-line tattoo from Dale at Sickle and Moon, and unfortunately, its my first…read moref-ed up tattoo. i already have six healed fine-line tattoos and have done all the right aftercare, including with this tattoo. despite that, the ink has healed extremely patchy, with multiple areas already missing ink entirely. also, the tattoo barely looks like the reference picture and now i need to have my artist back home correct it once it's fully healed, which will cost me an additional $100-$200 on top of the $100 i already paid. on top of all that, dale was extremely rude during my appointment. i wanted to adjust the placement of the stencil slightly, so we moved it about half an inch to align it better with the anatomy of my wrist. he visibly seemed annoyed by this, and i actually apologized for asking to move it. his response was, "maybe you should be more communicative." which was a completely unnecessary and rude comment, especially considering i was simply trying to make sure i was happy with the placement of a permanent tattoo. i chose Sickle and Moon because of its good reviews, which makes this experience even more shocking and disappointing. i went in expecting a professional experience and a great new tattoo, and unfortunately, i left with neither.

I got my first tattoo here last night. I initially went inside to check on pricing, but after talking to the person in the front waiting area (she had cool tattoos also), I decided that I might try having a "walk-in" appointment with one of the artists. She let me go back into the tattooing area and just get a feel for the place before I made my decision. As I was waiting, a tattoo artist (Kylee) who's work I had been looking at online before I even came to Animated Canvas, happened to free up. She took a look at the designs I was considering, and said she'd love to do them. She went and cleaned up from her previous appointment and let me decide which design I was going to go with. After I decided, about ten minutes later, she drafted up some sizes for the tattoo, and then made a stencil after I decided on the medium size. I should mention again that this was my first tattoo ever. I am afraid of needles, and I thought I was going to cry. The entire time she was tattooing my arm, Kylee made me feel like I was having a conversation over coffee with a friend I had known for years. Even my girlfriend, who was there for moral support, thought that Kylee was super cool and did a really good job of keeping me calm. By the end of the tattoo, I barely even knew I had just had my entire forearm stabbed with needles over and over for about 45 minutes. If you are getting your first tattoo, or getting more work done and you're in the Columbia area, this is THE place to go. You will feel at home. Kylee is an amazing artist, and I'm sure the others are as well. The pricing is fair, the staff is amazing, and you won't regret it at all. read more

I was extremely nervous about getting my first tattoo, but after doing some research I found Animated Canvas Custom Tattoo online and based on the ratings decided to give it a shot. The second I walked through the door I was greeted and my nerves were immediately calm. They walked me through the whole studio and process until I felt comfortable, and they even fit me in to get my tattoo that night. Shane was AMAZING I cannot emphasize that enough. He was super patient and tried to make it as painless as possible. He did not rush me when i was hesitant on deciding on my location and was so nice when I switched it a few times first. The whole experience was stress free and easy. I love the final product and if I decide to get another I will 100% be heading back here. read more

I just wanted to pop in and say hi. You guys are the best! I remember when I was planning on my first tattoo, I was planning on getting it out of state until a friend told me to go see Shane Anderson at Animated Canvas. I'm glad I listened! Shane has done all of my tattoos, save one. I am looking forward to getting many more. I need to finish my sleeve, then start planning the other sleeve! I may even branch out and share my "canvas" with the other artists. I trust every artist there. Anyway, better get back to work. Gotta make money to get another tat! read more

I walked into this tattoo shop without an appointment and was helped immediately. After filling out some paperwork, I waited less than a half an hour before getting my tattoo from Spyder. Spyder has 38 years of experience as a tattoo artist and was easy to talk to. I felt confident in trusting Spyder to do a nice job and he really did an awesome job! Highly recommend! I spent several weeks in Columbia for a work related event and found Kodi through instagram and decided to stop in got one of his Halloween Flash Tattoos. I was extremely impressed with the high quality work and returned the following two weekends to get additional artwork. The shop is very welcoming, clean, and professionally run.
