I recently had the best vet experience I've ever had here. Every person I interacted with was friendly, helpful, kind and patient. The doctor himself explained things thoroughly and anticipated the question I would have asked - what would he do if it were his cat? I also wanted to add that I know a lot of people dislike masks but I showed up with my respirator and felt relieved that they were wearing surgical masks so I didn't have to worry as much about my kitty bringing home an infection that could hurt me (or him). Horrible experience at this place. The lady that works alongside Dr. Cannon is very strange. She is a liar looked me dead in the eye and told me she left me three messages about an appointment which she had never done. I looked and I had missed calls, but she never actually left me a voicemail like she is saying this place is dishonest. Anyone that can lift me dead in the eye and lie to me. I don't wanna bring my dog there . This place seems all about the money and not about the care of your animal. I had my dog scheduled for a surgery, and I brought her in on that day and was told we would have to reschedule. I should've checked Yelp beforehand because this place only has three out of five stars. My vet gave me four recommendations and she said to use this place last because it was the worst place out of the four.! will not be using this place again or going back! Dr. Canton is awesome. My boxer came here with a horrible corneal ulcer that was stubborn and hard to heal. My vet referred me here after we had no luck treating it. Dr. Canton and his entire staff were great. Treatment was clear and specific. He is very strict about following treatment protocols so to ensure best outcomes. I'm very surprised to see the negative reviews for Dr. Canton and his staff (though most of them appear to be from people complaining about following COVID protocols and this kind of stupid just can't be avoided these days). Dr. Canton and his staff have been *wonderful*. My vet referred my cat to Animal Ophthalmology Services back in October 2022, and we've had probably five visits since then. Dr. Canton is kind and gentle, very approachable and communicative, and incredibly accommodating. He's been thorough in his examinations and explanations, he humors me in my internet "research" questions and concerns, never makes me feel silly, annoying, or inferior, and he hasn't hesitated to refer me out to other specialists for further diagnostics when we bump up against the limitations of his expertise. My cat presented with eye problems, but the issue appears to be a symptom of something systemic and Dr. Canton has collaborated with my local vet and the internist to give my boy the best possible treatment and outcomes. He squeezes us in when I call to report sudden changes in symptoms, and he doesn't shame me for failing to administer treatment perfectly. To those complaining about his prices, I say this (as a graduate student in economics): Unfortunately, veterinary care is costly (so is human healthcare). Dr. Canton can't control his costs or industry prices, and in order to help any pets, he has to be able to keep his doors open. As a consequence, there will be people priced out of the market -but you can thank capitalism for that, not Dr. Canton or his wonderful staff. I have pet insurance through Trupanion and they cover 90% of my costs. My advice to those complaining about cost is to get pet insurance because your pets *will* get sick and the costs *will* be high. This is just the reality of life. read more

Please take your animal anywhere else. They are not compassionate at all. It's all about the money with this practice and that hurts my heart so much. I am devastated at how they treat pet owners, and the hurtful things they say. As I read the reviews I'm validated that I'm not the only one. It's over $300 just to walk in the door and they demand visits every 2 months, when my paper work says my dog has an eye allergy. Today I was told I was a negligent dog owner when in fact I have spent over $3k in the last 18 months trying to find out why my dogs eye just won't get better. I got off the phone in tears today. This practice is awful. If you have an unlimited pocket book sure they will love you. But if you don't then you are trash to them. read more

Well, well, well, looks like I'm not the only one feeling the stress exuded by the staff at this frickin place. This clinic made an appt. for us at a specific time, then did not see us until 45 minutes after that! This after we traveled 1 hour to get there, and the office staff knew that. They make you wait inside your car to check in, while your pet is being seen and while you pay the grossly overpriced $258 for a general office visit. The frickin vet dr. didn't even know why we were there with our pet. He thought it was a follow up. It wasn't!!! Never ever again. read more

I waited in the parking lot for an hour and a half before they even saw my dog, then seemed totally confused as to why I brought her in (to get her EYES checked out??)...but the worst thing about this experience was how totally RUDE the staff is. Unfortunately for my dog, I've had to visit Dr. Canton several times for my dogs reoccurring corneal ulcer. I was referred by my vet because his eye abrasion/ulcer was just not healing. Dr. Canton and his staff are friendly and informative. I was able to heal my dogs eye twice under his care. The care is top notch and I will continue to go back as needed. My only complaint is boy is it expensive!!! It is very expensive to see this office. An office visit is $200 a pop. The cost for any treatment or medication after that just adds to the cost. There are also times when you may wait an hour or more before you meet with the doctor. He seems to try to fit in as many dogs as he can. Access for an appointment is pretty quick but be prepared to wait. Over I would say definitely bring your dog here if he/she has an eye issue...but beware of sticker shock and wait times :-) read more

I was referred to Dr. Canton by my local vet. I live in Vacaville. I had a puppy that had an infection and we were very concerned about the long-term effects to the eye. I called for an appointment and was treated extremely rude by their receptionist Jessica. She hung up on me twice. I understand there's a long wait to be seen there but treating people this way is unacceptable. From one professional to another I would hire new staff helping your patients. Well it's a peculiar practice, it seems very nice at first but then when they make you go over the road to the Sonic, because they wouldn't let my wife use the bathroom. I'm a veterinarian (general practice) and was devastated when my pup started bumping into walls but I couldn't find anything wrong with his eyes with the tools I had available. Sometimes even the doctor needs a doctor! Fortunately Dr. Canton and the staff at Animal Ophthalmology were able to help. I was unable to actually attend the visit and sent my brave husband with a page full of historical notes. The team were so accommodating and helpful, and kind when handling my large, anxious dog. Unfortunately it was found that Victor has a rare, irreversible condition that causes blindness, but his eyes will remain comfortable and he does not have any worse condition. The team were very compassionate as we received this difficult news. Thank you for helping me out in my time of need and for taking good care of my boy. read more

I would like to update Alex's status. After seeing Dr Canton Alex's eye has healed . The cornea had an ulceration was able to heal after several weeks of prescribed eye drops. I am so grateful that Alex was in Dr Canton's care. Alex is able to see and is pain free . read more

My doggy was referred here because of a corneal infection. When I called to make the appointment, I asked how much the service were. I love my pet, but I also have a budget and bills to pay (don't we all?). I was quoted $95 to $200 for a visit. Seemed a little steep, but I had to know what was going on, so I scheduled the appointment. They were very nice about letting my daughter bring our doggie and I could pay by phone. Well I almost had a heart attack when I was called with a $450 charge for the first visit. When the Doctor called me (a nice touch) to personally go over the visit, I stressed the fact that my financial resources were being tapped and I needed to know the full extent of this situation. Needless to say I was shocked when one of his prescriptions was over $95, on top of the visit. Then the doctor scheduled another visit for the following day. So another $200 later he says that our doggie needs surgery. Thank god our vet told me that our doggie wouldn't have survived surgery due to his advanced age. I felt like this clinic could have been as honest and we could of spent the last days of his life spending time with him rather than running back and forth to Vacaville for treatments that wouldn't have saved him. Just like people - I suggest a second opinion. I will say that the service was professional and helpful and they provided complete, thorough and accurate documenation also. It was very heartwarming to get a condolence card from them about our doggy. They must have followed up with my regular vet and found out about the passing, because we didn't contact them. I was referred here when my beloved dog Shadow was diagnosed with pannus. My general practice vet was unable to find the correct medication to stop the spread, so I was worried we had run out of options. Fortunately Dr. Canton and his team found the perfect balance of medications to give my dog, and she is now doing really well and it's 100% controlled in her left eye and 90% controlled in her right (the right eye was worse off, so it's taken a little longer to control). Dr.C and his staff treated my dog Minnie for several years with utmost care, compassion and professionalism. Like one other "reviewer" here; my dog also came to this clinic with many, many health problems - not just ones related to her eyes. Dr.C was always so caring and understanding in his assessment of her and his recommendations for her continued care; I can honestly not find enough words to describe their importance in giving Minne several more years of quality life, that she would not otherwise have had. Minnie is now also dead, since about a year ago; but when I saw that Animal Ophthalmology Services was here on Yelp, I thought that I needed to share a bit of mine and Minnnie's very, very good experiences with these incredible people. We were referred to Dr. Canton through word of mouth which is the best advertisement. Our Boston Terrier had cataracts. If you want a Dr. and staff who honestly care about your pet, see Dr. Canton, Megan and Amanda. Everyone there was sympathetic but realistic as to treatment and your pet is treated like one of theirs. I have't figured out yet how Megan got our spoiled Sadie to eat a treat. That right there is a plus in my book, which confirms your pet is comfortable in the surroundings. My experience with Animal Ophthalmology Services could not have been better! From the very beginning, Dr. Canton said he would treat my Barney with the same care and compassion he treats his own pets. I feel he did exactly that!!! My dog had a list of medical issues a mile long, making his treatment extremely complicated and difficult at times. Dr. Canton worked very closely with Barney's regular vet to ensure that none of the medications worked against each other. In my experience, good veterinary care comes with a price While I understand not everyone can afford to see a veterinary specialist, it is nice to know the service is available when an animal is in need. Sadly our Barney is no longer with us, but I would not hesitate to recommend Animal Ophthalmology Services to anyone who has a pet with eye issues. read more

I went in with my sister-in-law for a routine check up for her yorkies eye examination. The appointment was set for 11:30 and the doctor didn't enter the room until 12:01, and examined the dogs eye for maybe 5 minutes!! We waited 30 minutes for a 5 minute appointment and then was charged $179 dollars! The worst part is my sister-in-law is a regular customer, the doctor knows the dog, he knows the dogs eyes condition, and he still insists on see the dog every 6-8 weeks and charges her the $179 dollar fee every time!! The prescription (eye gel) that is prescribed works but he refuses to refill it until she brings the dog in for another check up. Six years of this and he still insists that she brings her in!! I had no idea this was going on until today. Horrible way to treat loyal customers. read more

I schedule an appointment for my puppy to see Dr. David Canton to check if my puppy's eyes were ok. My concern was that my puppy who was 6 months when we got him could not see well because he bark every time we approached him and seemed insecure ever since we got him. Also, he had a discharge coming out from his eyes. My Vet referred me to Dr. Canton and after reading the Yelp reviews I felt confident that he can help with my puppy's issue. When I called I spoke to a lady and explained my puppies issues and asked for a quote and was quoted $95 to $250. I schedule the appointment and brought my puppy in. the receptionist who lacks people skills seemed a little uptight and not friendly at all but I was ok with that because I was there for my Puppy to see Dr. Canton. Dr. Canton is very nice and professional he examined my dog very well and spent sometime with us to give us some insight as to why my puppy was insecure and skittish. Dr. Canton said my dogs vision was fine but his eyes were inflamed a bit and prescribed eye drops and an ointment. Dr. Canton said that after my puppy was done with the eye drops that he would most likely continue with the eye ointment only but that he would like to re-check his eyes in a couple of weeks. After the visit was over I was shocked that the visit cost was a bit over $250 although it included the prescriptions for his inflammation it hit my pocket book pretty hard. As the charming receptionist was ready to schedule the the follow up visit I asked how much that visit would cost and she quoted me $150 so I opted not to schedule the follow up since the Doctor said that after the eye drops all my puppy would probably need is the Ointment gel. The receptionist did not seem to like that I did not schedule the follow up appointment at all and said that the dog must be seemed by either Dr Canton or my regular Vet to re check his yes or to get refills. To defuse the situation right then and there I said ok and left. I called yesterday, 2 1/2 weeks after the visit and left a message on voice mail to the Dr. Canton to call me back to give him an update on his patient. The receptionist called me back and said that she wanted to give the Doctor a full message on my puppies situation and reiterated that my puppy will not be getting refills for anything unless he is seen by a Vet. All I want is to talk to the Doctor with out her getting involved. I want to discuss his progress over the phone and possibly continue with eye ointment since I still have plenty of ointment left . At this point I am not sure how well she is explaining to the Doctor what I told her on my behalf. It really is disappointing that the Doctor's office is ran that way. I hope that Dr. Canton would want to return my call even if it's for a minute just to give him a progress report on his patient. read more
