It contains the Belem Tower, grassy areas, trees, a lake, restaurants, a fort, a monument to commemorate the first air travel between Europe and South America, and a monument for the Combatants of the Overseas War. On our vacation my husband and I took a public bus to this garden. We walked through the grassy areas. We enjoyed seeing the tower--although it was wrapped in netting for repairs--as well as plants, a live musical performance, and vendors that sold souvenirs.

Some plays bussa nova, some plays folk songs. I come here every morning in Lisbon to watch the sunrise while sipping my tea. This small spot is right in front of my hotel. In the afternoon and during sunset, the city below is painted with different scenes that enchant me all day long. To the left, there's a cafe, and on the right, there's a view of Tagus River. She heard us speak in English and was surprised when I addressed her in Portuguese with our order. She proceeds to tell me she doesn't understand what a 'garoto' is because she doesn't know 'American words'. When I asked her to confirm she didn't know what a garoto was she had the decency of looking embarrassed and promptly 'remembered' what it was. Next I ordered a 'torrada com manteiga' and she served us a thin slide of whole wheat bread sprinkled with oreganos (you can't make this stuff up). I had her redo it minus the herbs and she still argued she always makes it that way. I mean if you want to deal with the village idiot in a decrepit park this is the place to visit.

There is also a little cafe on one end, with lots of outdoor seating. Worth a walk through for sure and a stop to sit a while if you have the time. Next time I'm in Lisbon (I am from California) I would really like to spend more time in this general area overall. This park will surely be on the list to visit again.

After a long day of walking around, my legs and feet felt like spaghetti. That's why it's nice to take a break throughout the day and relax a little bit. That's exactly what I did at Jardim de Estrela. This is a large park with plenty of trails, vegetation, and benches. I took advantage of the beauty and meditated here. Beyond the sights, there are several statues throughout the park to check out and learn some history. There are also a bunch of ducks and geese that hang out by the lake. The geese are huge! I'm not sure what they feed them in Portugal but we're talking mutant geese. If you're willing to hang out with mutant geese, this is a relaxing spot to spend some time at.

It was raining, so it was just us, the ducks and geese and a few dog walkers. It was so peaceful and beautiful. The trees here are enormous and beautiful. It's a lovely place to sit and relax. Plenty of places to stop for coffee and plenty of sculptures to admire.
