There is a new little treasure nestled in the tropical magic of 'Parramore's Fantastic Fish Camp &…read moreFamily Resort' on the beautiful St. Johns River. The dog and cat for whom the cafe' is named greet you as you pull up to the campground, the first indication that this is a 'real Florida' experience. The two beautiful parrots in cages outside the screened porch brought a smile as one kept screaming "hello!", and the other kept telling it to "Shut up!" We settled on the large screened porch to enjoy the spring morning as we looked over the menu. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served here and the menu is very impressive. I was surprised to see such a variety including everything from burgers to seafood... We settled on pretty basic eggs and home fries with bacon, but I had to try the boudain. It was fabulous! I enjoyed the simple breakfast all the more because of the beautiful atmosphere and the friendly service. Besides, everything tastes better when it's eaten out of doors, right?! Looking over the menu made me wish that I would be in town longer just to have the opportunity to try everything! lol! You can definately feel a New Orleans influence with the oyster po'booys and the boudain sausage offered. At the same time, you might be in the mood for some fried pickles or real gator tail chased by a nice cold beer. Until now this little town had some pretty meager offerings. Not much beyond the everyday fried everything that you can get anywhere else. This place stands out as a wonderful and much needed expansion to the local fare. This was a wonderful experience that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone. I will definately be back next time I'm in 'this neck of the woods!'

I am rating this place three stars. I live in a city. I have been in a city a long time. I used to…read morego to places like this in my home town, but alas, I am a different person. I could rate it lower, and if you are citified consider that. It is a friendly place, but it is in a friendly but very country town. Astor Florida is a nice community just on the edge of the Ocala National forest off the St. John river. Everyone comes here for the things that end in the letter "N". Huntin, fishin, hikin, you get the idea. There are almost as many bears as people. In that forest there is a little bar, where my niece was going to, so I asked my Brother in Law to take me there. Its a nice little place, Everyone was friendly, they served my favorite beer, and it was cold. The atmosphere is very red in the neck. It is 100% gen-u-wine, from the memorabilia for NASCAR, the rebel flags and down to the deer heads on the wall. The karaoke machine has every song as long as its country or western. I take that back, there was a couple rock songs there. There is no book, you wander up to the DJ and tell him what song you want to sing. I bet Freebird or some Allman Bros is on there, but I didn't sing. I could not. Its smokey. Very smokey. It is oxygen mask smokey because everyone is smoking all the time. In Tampa the cigar bars don't get this smokey. It goes with the turf. Did I mention it is a smoke friendly place? So all in all, it you are out here its a great place to rub elbows with folks in Astor. If you smoke you will be fine.

I had an amazing adventure at The Castaways on the River. They are dog friendly and don't have an…read morecharge extra. They make things so much easier by renting boats and pontoons, and convenient accommodations. They went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable. We originally booked room 100 (see photo of map). However they had a bad storm and they had to move us to cottage #3. It's perfect for a small group of 2-4. You can still see the lake from the balcony while you rock in your chairs. The cottage has everything from a coffee maker to toiletries. Check out their website. It's resourceful and it explains the layout of the cottages very well. We got there late but just in time to meet Cindy at the front office who already had a lock box ready with our key and all instructions just in case we got there past 5pm. The next morning we woke up and walked up to front desk to pick up all the instructions from Cindy to our pontoon. They give precise directions in navigating the lake and getting to the springs. It's about 30-40 minutes to get to the springs. We took our time since it's such a beautiful trip. The only thing that was I inconvenient is that you have to stop and fill up the gas tank at a specific place before you return the pontoon. Astor is a small town. We stopped at Buc-ees in Daytona Beach and purchased everything for our trip. It's great for all those snacks and drinks you will need. After a day at the springs we drove to a restaurant called Castaway. It was packed but a great atmosphere with locals watching college football with their families. I plan on making this a yearly vacation!!!!

A good pressure washing would be nice. Above all that the price was very high and then they overcharged me for an extra night ! I called to advise them but they were not interested in listening only about the money for them! I would NOT reccomend this place to anyone! Alot of better businesses in Astor then Castaways.
