Beautiful food, always...but I have been drinking and eating here for forty years, seen the bar moved back ten feet overnight by a team of helpers, spent Christmas day night there playing cards til dawn for years on end, been locked in more times than I remember, and as a result I love the place probably more than any other building going. And I know I'm not alone.
So to see a makeover that consists of slapping matt grey paint over all those beautiful old black 14th century wooden beams and pale walls had me in tears when I walked in. Quite what was going through their minds when they made that decision is a mystery. To go from a beautiful cosy pub to what feels like a half - finished corridor was a massive shock to the system!
We (and by that I mean all the not-so-old regulars) grew up in that pub, always welcome and always sat at our regular spot at the end of the bar, and when I sent them the photos I took inside their reaction was the same:
"WHAT THE F*** HAVE THEY DONE TO OUR PUB?"
I hope the owners see the error of their ways...if they read this and want volunteers to paint it back they only have to ask, I know there wouldn't be a problem there! read more
