Recently my doctor, a G.P. referred me to a specialist by the name of Dr. C. Andreou, who is not only a urologist but a surgeon as well. After an initial visit followed by a biopsy, he shared the news that based on the results of that biopsy, I had prostate cancer.
He, then, informed me of all the possible courses of action that I could pursue in regards to treatment. He did this in a knowledgeable, calm, professional and articulate manner, making sure to give as much information as possible, in terms of treatment options. He gave me as much time as I needed to make the decision which would be right for me. His demeanour and reassurance through all of this let me believe that he would support whatever decision I made in this area. This would be the hallmark for working with this remarkable man.
He clearly, at all levels, knew what to do, what his expectations were and by example, expected you to do the same. You, after all, had a very vested interest in not only getting the best possible care and expertise you could find but also wanted it to be done with a top notch surgeon as well. You would also want a surgeon who had accompanying outstanding people skills as well. In other words, not only a top surgeon but one with an amazing "bedside manner" as well. Dr. Andreou was the whole package.
So when I made the decision to have a radical prostatectomy, a complete removal of my prostate gland, I knew I would be facing major surgery and didn't want just anybody proceeding with such a delicate operation as this. I was extremely comforted when faced with the surgery because I knew I was in great hands and that certainly turned out to be the case. My surgery went extremely well as was the pre and post operative care I received too. I always felt cared for, listened to, as well as always feeling legitimized for any concerns, cares or questions I asked not only from Dr. Andreou but from his amazing staff as well. (more about his staff later.)
Three other things I would like to point out about my dealings with this incredible doctor and his amazing staff of talented individuals. 1. Dr. Andreou does have a remarkable way to absolutely utilize every second you are with him. He is totally "tuned into" you and what you are there to discuss. Therefore, make sure you come to each office visit with points, concerns or questions that are relevant to your situation. Dr. Andreou is ready to share whatever information that pertains to your case with you. He is informed and expects you to come prepared as well. Although he has a room full of patients and you sometimes have to wait to see him, the wait is always worth it. He has so many patients because he is so good, so much in demand and seems to always be willing to take on "new" patients. Hey, when you are dealing with a "cancer diagnosis," I am willing to wait to see such a top notch doctor rather than being told he could see you in maybe two years. You are always able to book a timely appointment with him. Dr. Andreou is totally focussed on you when it is your turn to see him. How he is able to do this on any consistent basis is mind boggling when one considers how many actual patients this man would see on a regular basis. During your time with him, he is dedicated, committed by understanding you, listening to what you have to say and valuing you as a patient and a human being as well. 2. Many people say that he is considered one of the top, if not the best surgeons in his field. He has done this operation "thousands" of time, and is among the best surgeons in his field and so I felt confident that I was getting the best possible surgery I could get. I was extremely pleased with the quality of surgery that was performed by Dr. Andreou. 3. This doctor has an outstanding office staff as well. It is not surprising that excellence attracts excellence as well. His amazing office staff are kind, caring and as wonderful as he is. They allow him to be among the best in the field because they are simply the best too. How can they juggle so many patients, be tuned in to each and everyone of them as well as organize Dr. Andreou?
Although I would not recommend anybody proceed with a radical prostatectomy unless it was a course of treatment you needed to proceed with; I know who would give you outstanding care from beginning to end with an amazing office staff to outstanding surgeon and doctor and that would be Dr. Andreou and his staff. read more
